    Default Valerian Root

I heard it helps with anxiety attacks. I'm on a severe lowered dosage of Xanax and already went through my script, so I'm not too sure what to do.

Can I take this while I'm at work? IT takes a LOT to knock me out to go to sleep. I just purchased some from whole foods and I'm curious as to how it works.

    Thanks

They knock me out. I would say try a low dosage when you are at home and don't have anywhere to go incase you get tired.

    I have 470mg and I don't think they've ever knocked me out.
My body is so anti-sleep it's revolting.

It would be awesome if they helped with anxiety though. Thank you for that tip. I'm all out of Xanax, so I'll be sure to try that. I could really use the help.

They smell like a fat man's armpit, though. Ick.

Keep me updated when you try it and I'll update as I'm trying tomorrow.

I'm back to ordering xanax online fuck the bullshit ladies. It's expensive as hell like 20x's what it normally costs but I rather get the dosage I need rather than paying for Dr visits and have them argue.

i'm going to try the valerian root. melatonin doesn't help me sleep either (it makes my night terrors increase) I can seriously stay awake on everything. Unless I take ambien with 2mgs of xanax..NO LIE.

    Lets hope for the best!

melatonin is a placebo. valerian, not so much (though its effects don't come through making you sleepy but rather preparing your body to sleep better once you're lying down), but anything over 500mg is overkill for most people.

^ so Valerian is known to work?

I took 2 of 475 mgs of Valerian and I feel so calm. I don't feel sleepy just calm.

^It never worked for me. Nada, nothing. I stick with melatonin and a glass of vino. It gives me weird dreams but I'm okay with that. I can see how it can give some people night terrors though.

    Good Luck

yeah, they've done studies with valerian and its effects aren't placebo effects. it works for a decent number of people.

I have a good friend who is an herbalist. I remember he once made up a mixture of calming herbs for me to smoke and I think it included valerian. Next time I talk to him I will ask him again for the ingredients, or maybe I have them written down somewhere.

    ...

why do you say melatonin is a placebo?

Are you basically just saying it doesn't do anything for you?

no, i'm saying that available research indicates melatonin is basically about the same as a placebo.

however, placebo effects are strong, and for plenty of people, those little pills work like a charm.

    Link to the available research?

I did a quick article database search, and found nothing of the sort. meatonin+ placebo turned up only studies showing effects.

It's certainly possible that it's placebo, but seems mighty unlikely that a circadian-rhythm-balancing hormone would have no effect on circadian rhythms if ingested...

I have a lot of anxiety especially at the club. I take Nature's Way standardized Valerian. Four capsules of Valerian before work with a cup of Traditional Medicinals Nighty Night tea works really well for me.
Here's a link for the tea:

I prefer to use natural remedies and have found they work better without the addictions & side effects. Breathing techniques work well too.

It works for me and i am sure it's not a placebo, one does the trick and 2 will keep me out and in weird dreams for 12 hours. Maybe it doesn't work for everyone since our bodies naturally make it and they have plenty?

placebos work on a lot of people. the placebo effect is well documented and researched itself and it definitely does work. it's an issue within medical research, because it can be pretty hard to beat placebo effect in studies.

a series of studies finding melatonin to basically have no difference to placebos used hundreds of people, whereas the studies claiming specific effects used 5-10 people.

I totally dig the placebo effect. I'm just skeptical in this instance, because the body can usually make use of hormones it produces, though meangirl makes a good point about previous levels probably altering the individual effect.

Linky to the series of studies?

Not to threadjack, but I think that the so-called "placebo effect" should be renamed to the "Powerful Mind effect". As in, I think it's your will being as good as a drug. Not your foolishness.

Recipe for anti-anxiety herb mix. These are to be dried, crushed, mixed together and smoked like a cigarette.

    *Red clover
    *Blue vervain
    *Peppermint
*Lobelia (inflata species, a stimulant, so use just one leaf)

Totally agree. I don't knock the placebo effect at all, and it's unfortunate that the phrase has negative connotations. Still, it's existence and legitimacy doesn't mean it automatically applies in a given situation- it has to be documented according to the same experimental design as drug testing.

I am sorry for the threadjack. I've never tried valerian, I mean to next time I feel anxious.

Sometimes I take Kava, Valerian, and melatonin together for sleep. People caution not to take Kava daily, but it's relatively benign in lower doses (no negative effects on the liver). It usually works pretty well.

I found that they made me drowsy enough to fall asleep. But they didn't do anything for my anxiety.
Do u take an SSRI? thats more likely to assist u with anxiety rather than a sedative.
