Default Herbs and veggies for immune health?

I noticed that my body has been really ineffective lately -- particularly at fighting off skin infections, like it takes FOREVER for cuts to heal, piercings get inflamed, etc. -- so I decided it must have something to do with my diet having pretty much zero produce in it. I been living on Cliff bars, bananas and peanut butter. not good, i know.

So I went shopping and got celery and carrots to munch on, baby squash and portobello mushrooms for stir fries, and blackberries to indulge in. but these things were all random. Does anybody know what I should be including in my diet for immunity boosting?

(Yeah... I have green tea and echinacea tea.)

fish and other seafood. also chicken and fowl aren't too bad, for that matter. and peas. all contain the best sources of zinc, which certainly helps with the immune system.

the key thing is whole foods, overall. minimal processing, roasting/baking, stir-fry, sauteeing when you do have to cook.

well, i did mention peas. :-D

legumes (inc. peas) are ok for zinc, as is dairy (milk/eggs/butter). the animal-based stuff is somewhat more optimal than the legumes. but even there, raw is still best.

there's a ton of anecdotal evidence (and some scientific evidence) that raw milk is a great immune booster.

i don't know what kind of vegetarian you are, most american ones have trouble getting enough calories or the right kind of calories. but raw milk and peas! just not together.

I was going to say zinc too...don't know offhand what is high in zinc (besides oysters), but google should tell you.

Berries are touted as being good for immunity, but it is my belief that a nice variety of any fruits and veg will do (ie whatever's local/cheap/handy). Variety being key.

I avoid dairy and animal products.

    Sorry, I should have explained.

I have heard this raw thing a lot lately.

broccoli is supposed to be really good for you. Pretty much most veggies are, except I'm always hearing corn isn't that great for you, and ice berg lettuce doesn't really have the much nutritional value to it.

Ditch the peanut butter (fungus) and add in some garlic and onions.

Buy Paragone and Oil of Oregano too.

I buy a lot of frozen stuff, especially since I have a habit of being a fickle eater and don't want my food to go to waste. Obviously fresh is better, but I need to have gas money too.

Scarlett is right about the berries. I found frozen berry combos are delish: when they defrost a little, it's like sorbet.

Frozen collard greens (new research is out about their immune system boost and cancer-fighting properties), spinach and broccoli are excellent too.

Found this article on the top nutrients and where to get them: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/T042500.asp

Raw milk is only good if it's from a reputable certified organic farm and as long as the person isn't intolerant to dairy. If I were tolerant to it, i'd frink it. But i'm not, so I won't.

All whole foods are basically good for immunity. It's the imposter foods that mess everything up.

Rutabega is very good for the immune system. I chop it up and blend it into a smoothie.
