Default Job search.. what should I do?

I'm about to go to some of the long term care facilities around here to get job applications. Should I fill out the applications while at each place or should I go to a bunch of places, get applications, fill them out at home and turn them in tomorrow?

Whatever you do, DRESS NICELY and conservatively. No jeans, shorts, etc. Dress like you're going to get a job. I'm amazed at how people show up dressed while looking for work.

Definetely was planning on it. I always like to dress as if I'll get an on the spot interview. I even took my contacts out and put glasses on so I'll look smarter

I'd say to bring in your resum, fill in the applications while you're there, and hand it all in together. Just make sure you have any information you might need (phone numbers of references, addresses, etc.) on you.

If there's any applications that have questions that require some thought/writing I'd probably bring those ones home though, just so you can write it all out first, revise it, and then write it on the actual application.

    PERFECT advice.

    Thanks for the tips!

I went to a really fancy pants nursing home and they only had a 10PM-6AM shift open.. bleh. I filled out an application there anyway and spoke to the director of nursing.

I went to another place and the director of nursing was out for lunch, but I filled out an application there and a nurse at the desk said she's almost positive they are hiring for days. She called the director and told her I was there and she said she'd look over my application and give me a call back.

Then, I just came home. I'm so lazy, and I always have a problem with applying at too many places all at once and then I'll do an interview and get a job I'm satisfied with then 2 days later another place calls me back that has better hours/higher salary etc and I always kick myself for putting in so many apps.

Today I just went to the 2 places I'd like to work the most. If I don't hear from that lady by tomorrow evening, then I'll go put in applications at other places.

This is such a pain in the ass. Am I going about this all wrong?

I think you're doing it just fine! Definitely a good idea to apply where you want to work the most first and then to the places you could settle for. Also a good idea to apply to several places at once since you have a higher chance of getting a call from someone.

I'd probably recommend following up with the 2 places you really want to work at after a week or so of applying if you haven't heard back (sometimes it takes a while and stuff).

Also! Just because one place gives you the job doesn't mean you have to accept it right away. Ask them for a day to think about it in case somewhere else calls, and then even if you do accept it and start and something better comes along doesn't mean you can't take it. Lots of people bounce from job to job when they're looking for one because they'll get their first offer, and then a few days/weeks later something better will come along, and then maybe after that something else will come along AGAIN. Why settle for less when you've got an offer for something so much better? If it does happen to you again, hand in a two weeks notice (if possible so you can leave on good terms JUST IN CASE) and move on.

Best of luck with your searching!

All the jobs I've ever gotten were those at which I filled out and turned in the app on the spot.
Which is to say that all the jobs I've ever NOT got hired at are those which I took the app home.

    Just sayin!

Have you tried getting hired at a hospital? That seems much more interesting and well-paying than working at a nursing home. I don't think I could handle that.

^^ I filled the ones I did today out on the spot. The second place called me back and said as soon as I get issued my temporary nursing license she is going to call me back in for an interview.. they have a sign on bonus too!

^ The reason I want a nursing home is because it's more of a mangerial/paperwork/desk position.. The main reason is that the hospital here pays $15.18 an hour to run around all day and wipe asses, plus they usually give at least 6 patients and the nursing homes pay around $18 an hour to sit at a desk all day. I'm going to go back to school in the fall for healthcare management, so in addition to the better pay, I think more of a managerial position would be best for me!

One thing I suggest doing is typing up a list of your references' names, phone numbers and addresses, and the same with your past places of employment. Then print it out and bring it with you. That way, when you're filling out the applications, you're not sitting there for 20 minutes trying to remember the zip code of the place you worked 3 years ago.

Are you sure? Because I am a member of a nursing board myself and have read that a lot of nursing homes have an RN as the basic 'head'/manager, and then there are some CNAs. And those nurses tell horror stories about how many times they end up doing the CNA's jobs and running around a lot. Especially with senior citizens who can be ornery and demanding. I wasn't given the impression that it was just sitting at the desk and doing paperwork very much. (Of course that's what the nursing home wants you to think so you won't be scared off).

I guess I'm just saying you could be stuck with more work than you think you'd be getting into, so check into that.

Oh, and if you are interested in the link to the board, feel free to PM me, it's a nice place.

I've worked at hospitals and nursing homes. As a CNA, and as a nursing student.

I personally despise nursing homes. with a passion. They have such a shortage of help. I have had to care for up to 32 patients at one time! I actually got fired for not getting all my work done. My residents started to smell because they weren't being bathed often enough...but I just didnt have enough time in the day for 32 baths, 32 bed changes, feedings, and so on.
Not to mention it's very mundane. Same old shit, day in and day out. In a hospital, the scenery stays the same, but each day brings a new and different challenge.

For me thoug, I prefer home health care the best. The clients stay the smae, and i have my set schedule, but traveling around all day makes the day go by so fast, and you can build rapport with each client. Not to mention that home health care pays the best, and they offer sign on bonuses as well.

PLus, if you like the managerial side of things ( your a lot like me. After I finish nursing I'm going into management as well) Home health care is good for that, because you need to create care plans for your clients, make sure those care plans are followed through with the aides, oplus all the paperwork and so forth.
