    Default Upgrading my Mac

To all Apple nerds and knowledgable people.

I currently have an IbookG4 and I love her, she has served me well but she's a pain in the arse, sooooo daaaaaaamn slooooooow and she is full to bursting with no room left for even a wafer thin after dinner mint. So's I was gonna get her some more memory right, but while I was gazing adoringly at the MacBook Air ('Scuse the wet patch on my seat) I got to thinking, why don't I just upgrade properly? I like the Air because it is small and I travel alot which is why I originally got my little baby but I'd like to do more on my puter, like photo-editing and other artistic ventures. But I is broke antipodean with no bank account (yes really). What I really want to know is if there is a more fundulations friendly alternative to taking the plunge and buying a whole new puter and software (A$1735 for photoshop? Seriously?).

I want an IPhone too, but I think an Ipod touch and a cheap pay-as-you-go in whichever country I'm in would be a more sensible alternative..

    So yeah, what y'all think?

Well I discourage the AIR right now since the case is also the processor heatsink and the right side can get uncomfortably hot. That will probably be fixed with their next design with copper channeling or something crazy.

Also, the air has to have you tote around the DVD drive with it (not a big deal)

If you're married to the apple interface, I would really like to know why you couldn't upgrade your laptop and run gimp and/or adobe cs2? Gimp is free.

The CPU on my old one was melting, so I had to get a new computer quick, fast, and in a hurry. Flava vision was blurry. (+89million to anyone who gets that reference!)

I've have so far been discouraged from the Air because of the external dvd drive. I already have an external hard-drive and I find untangling that from my camera/phone/i-pod /computer charger and associated cords incredibly frustrating in a suitcase at airport security (for example).

Gimp? OK, let me re-phrase everything; I KNOW NUSSING!!!!

I luv how my Mac works also, even tho it's a G4 desktop still running OS 8.6. I also need to upgrade in order to run OS X to be able to change from dial-up to a DSL connection at my ISP.
Make a beeline to a library or magazine rack in a supermarket and see the current June '08 issue of Macworld magazine -- the big feature article, "Which Mac? - How to choose the Mac that's right for you." It gives the pros & cons of all current models.
Also in the back pages of this magazine are ads of dealers that may take your laptop in trade and sell a late-model reconditioned Mac for less than the same model brand new. Go to their website and check offers.
If you need to log into a secure website such as a bank account requiring 128-bit encryption, you'll need to be running OS X. Any new software for the Mac will also require OS X. Even to use the download client for Google Earth also requires OS X on a Mac.
A newer Mac with the new Intel processor allows you to run both OS X and Windows on the same computer (if you must use some Windows application). If you install Windows, you'll have to also install the anti-virus protection that all Windows users have to hassle with.
For photo editing, it's likely that Adobe Photoshop Elements (cost about $90) will do everything you want to do and probably a lot more. Go into a Barnes & Noble bookstore and scan the manuals on how to use Photoshop Elements, and I think you'll be impressed.

Compatible memory and hard drives for a G4 iBook aren't that hard to come by.

What is it that you do with the iBook, other than photo editing? Also, look to see what stuff is already loaded on the computer and running, because that may be part of the problem. One thing I see a good deal is anti-virus and anti-spyware programs running in the background, slowing down the other operations. If you aren't on the internet at the time, and if you aren't loading something from someone else's discs or network, you can turn those scanners off and get back some performance.

Which operating system are you using, and which programs do you want to use?

Uuuuuum......... OK, I'll give this my best shot, I'm pretty clueless though so bear with me..... I Have buckloads of music and photo's on here, I also write. I would like to do some more graphics type stuff, photoediting and other artwork, I'm looking into those tablet thingies you can draw on, I'm pretty sure that's the technical term right? Right now what's taking up the most room is my music, and I want more. I keep a lot of my photo's and other graphic files on my external HD but I find it annoying, I know it's simple but I'd rather they were all just in one place. I'd also love to run Garage band but I had to delete it, it was taking up precious room and it ran too slow to utilise properly anyways.

Currently I don't do any photo-editing, I only know how to use Adobe and I don't have it on here but I'm sure I could pick up on another program without too much trouble.

It's just music, photo's, word and the internaughty, I reckon most new i-pods could run more than this does.

I'm using OS X, Version 10.4.11 is that what you wanted to know?

I don't believe I have any anti___ software, I've never had any virus issues either.

I was looking through other people's posts on slowing iBooks, and here's what I saw:

I will say without fear of contradiction that your hard drive is dying. Back up your stuff, you need a new one.

You can confirm this by popping open the Console tool (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and seeing what it says during these long, long pauses. What it'll say is -- to put it in lay terms -- "Your hard drive responded with an error instead of what I wanted to read from it, I'm going to sit here and try again repeatedly for many minutes until it doesn't. Observe as it fails over and over!"

Nthing your hard drive is dying, and is probably not going to last much longer.

A very quick and dirty way to check (Although majick is totally spot on, you might not see what you're looking for if you don't know what you're looking for) is to go into Disk Utility, click on the actual physical drive (Will probably say "TOSHIBA 40GB" or something to that effect) thats listed on the left. At the bottom, you should see some information, and one of those will say "S.M.A.R.T. Status" If the message says "Failing" instead of "Verified" (or, really, if it says ANYTHING besides "verified"), you can be assured that the drive is dying.

However, if it DOES say verified, that doesn't necessarily mean that the drive is okay - it's more all drives that say "failing" are, but not all drives that say "verified" are.

So, there's that to think about.

Back to what you wrote, I would still like to know more about the system information. Do you know which G4 you have, how much RAM and what size hard drive? What operating system was on it at the beginning? Do you have a specific model number, so we can look up what its expansion capabilities are?

Wow! I thought OS X 10.3.9 was the most advanced an iBook G4 could handle. Must go investigate the cost of upgrading.

I also have an iBook G4. The only real upgrade you can give your iBook is more memory. If you run Activity Monitor (found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder), you can easily see if you need more. If there isn't any green in the pie chart, you need more memory.

For the maxed out hard drive, get yourself an external firewire drive and port lots of files onto it. Once you are sure they are safe there, delete the files from your internal hard drive. Or you could get a USB Flash drive. A 32 gb flash drive costs less than fifty bucks today, and two of those plugged into your USB ports should give you two or three times more mass storage.

I drool over the MacAir, too, but my iBook was one of the first sold, and I learned to wait awhile and let them get the bugs fixed before buying. Apple usually has a big sale of the older models just before they come out with an upgrade, so it might be worth waiting until they are ready to come out with the third revision,

Green means you have more memory than you are using. This is good.

If the external HD is an irritant, think about the USB flash drives. They are smaller than your thumb and all they would do is stick out a little on the left side of your iBook, and only when you are using them.

If there is no new program operating in the background, then your computer should work the same as when it was new. So, the hard drive may be an issue. That information page says that your iBook can handle an addition 1GB or RAM, which should speed things up in OS X. If there is only a little free space on the internal HD, your speed issues may result from the computer not making a big enough virtual memory partition.

There are utilities to check the HD's performance, to see if it is causing read errors in the background.

If new/updated programs are the ones which are slow, try adding RAM to the full 1.5GB. 1GB of DDR2 goes for around $30 down here. I'd have to check on DDR PC2700.
