Default Easiest way to get an antidep prescription?

So I'm great with self-prescribing but when it comes to going through The Man I'm a complete idiot. No health-insurance. I am on an antidepressant that's doing great for me (wellbutrin), which I got in Thailand. When I get back to the States, I'm going to need to get a new supply. I'd rather go through a doctor than an online pharmacy due to reliability concerns -- don't want to be cut off by customs, etc. So I'm curious. Especially if you're in PDX -- what's a good way to get a prescription for a medication you're already taking? I really don't want to have to buy more than one doctor appt., can't afford it.

Many psychiatrists will script you like three months worth of meds after the initial visit. In short, you'd be seeing one for med maintenance four times a year. Docs seem to be more than willing to prescribe antidepressants, sometimes to the point of pushing them on people, even for off-label issues.

most docs will hand that shit out easily. tell them you were living (?) over there and thats what you were on and have been on bring the bottle to prove it to him and im sure whoever it is will give it to you. most family doctors will give it to you no problem.

I'm pretty sure they'll be glad to give you a script but they might want to do bloodwork after a few months to make sure your liver's OK. I mean, if you care about that sort of thing. It's just your liver.

Yea, uh, you should go to the doctor or not be taking it at all. You self prescribed Wellbutrin?

Many psychiatric hospitals have low or no cost prescription programs.

I am not normally an advocate for self-diagnosis and treatment but I understand not being able to afford md visits on a regular basis. If you know what you need to take or have been taking and it works give this a shot. I ordered antibiotics from them and received them in about 4 weeks. http://www.medsmex.com/store/home.php?cat=47

Wellbutrin hasn't got a serious liver warning like some stimulants (unless the liver is already compromised, or unless it's combined with certain other medications) it's OTC in Thailand as a smoking cessation aid, not at all for sale there as an antidepressant, and not for sale at all in China. It's the only dopamine reuptake inhibitor on the market, and I knew from detailed research that I have a dopamine/norepinephrine problem, not a serotonin problem -- meaning that it's literally the only antidep that could work for me, with the exception of Strattera (which is an NRI and usually prescribed as an ADD med, not an antidepressant) and the heavy hitters like Effexor, which I'm not going to touch, not unless I am unable to function.

I have called up purported low-cost clinics in PDX but usually the result is "we're not taking any more low-income clients right now, thx play again", so I'm assuming I'll need to go to an individual doctor.

And, yeah, I totally would prefer to be taking it under the supervision of a competent professional.

Part of the reason why I tend to self-prescribe is that when I had insurance, it was Kaiser, where the official treatment option for most things was a toss-up between "do nothing" and "prescribe the wrong thing", and on the "what are you taking" questionnaires they had no idea what most of my supplements were and I had to explain the chemical makeup and pharmacology of each one. So I'm used to being competent but not professional and dealing with people who are professional but not competent... heh.

And, no, I wouldn't recommend anybody else take my path, at least not without the ongoing research habit I've had for several years.

This year I came to the point where I realized: I've now self-prescribed antidepressants correctly -- not only is this supposed to be a dubious idea, it's supposed to be impossible. I'm either crazy or just good at this stuff or both. Maybe I won't be the neurologist I wanted to be when I was a kid, but at this point I am looking at signing up for prerequisite classes and either going into a nursing program or a pharmacy program, depending on whether I think I can survive the hefty math required for the pharmacy program. Because, damn, if I do this for fun and survival, I might as well work on the credentials to help others...

^ if you're smart and thorough, which it seems you are, I'm a fan of self-prescibing. I think you probably end up with better treatment, as you know yourself and your symptoms, and spend a lot more time on research than your doctor would.

I do it, sort of. I go to docs because it's free, but I walk in knowing what I want and just ask for it. Never a problem. If I think it might be, I go to a walk-in and ask to have my prescription for xyz 'renewed'. It's simple but effective...never once been questioned.

Well, I'm not gonna recommend my doc 'cause I think without insurance they charge $290 for a new patient visit - ack. But I would call around and just straight-up ask for prices. What the hell.

I have ordered meds through inhousedrugstore.com and never had a problem. They probably carry wellbutrin. Also, if you find a nice doc you can get samples. I took Prozac for free for a couple of years that way.

Calling around is probably a good idea. I'm a little paranoid since I've heard horror stories in which "knowing about pharmacology" automatically equates in the doctor's mind to "being a drug abuser", but that can't be true everywhere. :-)

I went to a psych on Thursday, and I had an idea of wanting to try Zoloft, I wasn't dead set on it but I had heard good things. I went in, talked to him for a bit about what I was experiencing and told him I didn't feel like the Lexapro I was previously on was doing enough. I said I may want to try Zoloft and he wrote me a prescription.

Best of luck with your appointment and doctor search. I also don't have insurance but I was getting so sick of feeling depressed and anxious that I just broke down and paid an assload of money for a visit.

Another thing you can try is calling some doctors or psychiatrists and asking if they have a "sliding scale" payment program. I know in my area, if you demonstrate financial need (no hard proof necessary), the cost of your appointment will range from half-off to totally free. When I was in school part-time with no insurence, I saw a doctor who normally charges $280 for an initial visit...for the low low price of $10!
Also, I don't know specifially if your drugs are available in generic form (even if they aren't here, they may be overseas! The medicine I take ($400/month) is approved genericly ($50/month) everywhere but the US. Grrr )
Also, check the Wal-mart $4.00 prescription list. They keep adding new drugs, so you may get lucky.
But really, call around or check online for docs who use the "sliding scale" system.

Totally useles info but if doctors over there are anything like they are here then they will be happy to hand out the anti deps before anything else. And if you have researched it on the net then you know as much as they do. They just look it up in their little book and match the symptoms to the drugs and say, well try this one for a bit and see what that does for you. Its all just trial and error.

I dont know about wellbutrin, but most of them dont make you "high" as such, and so they dont get as leery about prescribing them as they do say, valium or somehting more addictive.

Efexor can be great for some people, but the side effects can be HARD CORE like seriously fucked up fucking hard core. I didnt sleep for the two months my dr forced it upon me (just to see how we went before trying something else) and my bf when he was on it starting having regular panic attacks nightmares, sweats, rages and hallucinations, sexual dysfunctions (couildnt cum), couldnt piss, it was INSANE. Then when he stopped and was detoxing he was fitting and passed out, (only for like a second) I was so scared I nearly called an ambulance. Then we just sat up all night with me sponging his head and checking his breathing every five minutes.

Ops sorry I am ranting, I have ISSUES with efexor. which has nothing to do with your question!!
