Default lost passport and birth certificate questions...

I need a new passport and the info regarding birth certificates and processing time on the gov sit is a little vauge... planning on calling the appropriate agencies tomorrow, but in the meantime, I thought I'd see if anyone could answer some questions.

Anybody recently obtain a passport showing a birth card or other short birth certificate as proof of citizenship? My mother was never given a traditional birth certificate so all I have is a dinky wallet sized birth card. Also, if I end up having to get a certified copy, do I need to send in my marriage certificate along with my drivers licsence since I've changed my name?

I know I need to send in a "statement regarding a lost or stolen passport". I do not have my passport #... how long does it take for them to process that before I can go in and apply for a new one?

What are my chances of getting a new passport by September?

From what I've read, you cannot get a passport with anything less than a certified copy of a birth certificate.

If you go to this page, it gives links in each state to the site where you can get a copy of your birth certificate. I was born in Illinois (but live in MN) and ordered two copies of my certificate with very little trouble for about $30, including the 2-day UPS shipping. (That was the only choice they offered.) They required the use of a credit card, which I presume was a means of verifying my identity in addition to form of payment.

Anyway, I'm sure the processes vary by state, but check yours out. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was, and now I have two certified copies for when I finally get around to applying for a passport.

^ This is how it was for me. I live in IL and I was born in FL. I had to pay by credit card and get the 2-day signature delivery only shipping for my BC's.

I believe that you could have a new passport by September, but you may have to pay a rush fee?? Not sure what the turn around times are these days.

if you're going to be in the county/city you were born you can get a certified copy (assuming your birth was registered the normal way) same day for about $17 (that's what mine cost in CA.)

I'm just glad we have the Internet these days. I remember growing up, my mom only had one birth certificate for each of us, and made it sound like the hassle of the universe trying to replace it. Like you had to actually GO to the hospital, show your ID, etc....a daunting prospect when you live 450 miles away from where you were born. Now, we can just type in a few things, fill out a form, pay some money and boom! Right to our doorstep.
