I would suggest going to this site. There are no qualifications, minimums, income restrictions, or applications. For about $30 bucks you get $60 bucks worth of food. Good deal if you ask me . Although I dont have any experience with them ive been on some "mom" forums that have and they have nothing but good things to say about them.

I do this every month! For about 90-100 dollars I get enough meat for the month for a family of 5. The food is good food too!

Seriously. Gas is $3.91 here. Today. Tomorrow it might be $4.

hmmm....unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a lot of "food" in the food. Hamburgers, fries, pancakes, chicken fingers...

I guess it's good if you're totally strapped but I hate it that poor folks are always stuck with crap junk food. It could only perpetuate the cycle.

uh, the may menu has cauliflower, carrots, bean soup corn and onions, along with pears, eggs, milk and cereal. not a bad range for the non-meat stuff. And the meat is in small portion sizes.

it's not quite 'crap junk food', not really. small portions of meat, reasonable selection of vegetables, and some dairy/eggs. not bad for 30$ total and 1-3 weeks of food, depending on how one stretches it.

it's overall a good deal and certainly more optimal in terms of useful calories than most "poor diets" without being excessive. and the meat specials actually allow people to buy meat in bulk to store for later use, pretty much not perpetuating a cycle, but instead aiding in long-term food budgeting development.

Then you're in luck! With a whole foods diet, it is less expensive to eat a meat-free diet:

(Go Vegetarian to Save Money - MSN Money):
    http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com...ey.aspx?vv=450

All the food in that program is factory farmed meat - that's exactly what's being represented whenever you see those videos of animals living in horrid conditions ("factory farming" is also known as confinement farming, it's purely about volume), no pretense about "happy meat" there...

But I think the sentiment behind the OP was lovely, so I won't further derail, just passing on info.

how are vegetables and fruit and bread 'factory farmed meat'? they do offer more than meat, as my post above indicates (information available on their own site, easily).

I think you'd have to interpret it less literally, and understand that what was meant was "all the meat."

that article ignores the fact of malnutrition and calorie shortages on vegetarian diets, which much of the world ALSO suffers. calorie shortage and reduced brain function due to malnourishment don't make a good case for vegetarianism.

Wait, so are you trying to argue that it's not cheaper to be a whole foods vegetarian? Or that being a vegetarian will reduce your brain function or lead to calorie shortages? Please provide evidence at least as good as MSN Money.

Guess what? Plenty of the world eats meat and also experiences calorie shortages and reducted brain function, that isn't a feature of vegetarianism - but local shortages of food. Actually, if the entire world were vegetarian, there would be a lot more food to go around, and less starvation (as the nutrients fed to animals to inefficiently become meat could be going to humans).

^^^hey, Lilah--Learn from my experience: it's not worth it. It's like trying to argue with guys at the club: it will benefit you in no way.

Anyway, Sophia - it sounds like you're struggling financially, and if you need help with an inexpensive and healthy vegan diet for your child, I can PM you a link if you'd like

link me to countries where children under 5 have reduced brain function and the diets are high in animal-based protein. i'd be very interested in the data.

we don't have the arable land worldwide to support a world of vegetarians with enough calories consistently-- not even if you like pesticides, because organic yields simply cannot be made high enough and even with pesticide use, there's still not enough calories and protein. vegetarianism is a regional solution at best, and that should be considered ok, rather than a reason to impose one dietary structure on all.
