    I used to think PDX meant Phoenix! No clue why.

    Probably the airport code. They're usually 3 letters.

    ex. ATL = Atlanta, GA
    HSV = Huntsville, AL

    ATX = Austin, Texas.

    Many airport codes aren't instantly recognizable as denoting their city -- like YVR for Vancouver. Portland, Maine is PWM.

    All Canadian ones start with Y, so

    YVR= YVancouveR
    YOW= YOttaWa
    YWG = YWinnipeG

    Can't explain YYZ (Toronto) or YUL (Montreal) though

    ORD = Chicago O'Hare.

    ORD is for Orchard, though...which used to be what O'Hare now sits on. It used to be one of the biggest Apple Orchards around.

    The X was added to the 2 letter abbreviation in cities with weather stations as big city controlled airports were built such as PHX, PDX, LAX, to create 3 letter codes. Others just use 3 letters incorporating some reference to the city or airfield.

    One city that wanted to change their code, but didn't like the alternatives and ultimately embraced their code was SoiUX city, Iowa. That's right SUX.

    I fly SMF-Sacramento Municipal Field
    LAS- Las Vegas
    HNL- Honolulu
    OAK- Oakland, CA
    SFO-S.F.
    OGG- Kahului, Maui ?????????

    Geezus, no. Rockford is 1 1/2 hours outside of Chicago.

    Rockford = RFD

    San FranciscO would be my guess. If you're in S.F., you can call it S.F., The City, or San Francisco. You are not allowed to say SanFran or the dreaded 'Frisco. At least that's what I've been told. I stay away from there.

    Oh bah, it's just a quicker way of saying it. Can't be any worse than saying "Too-Stoned, AZ"

    Locals also call it the Sco...at least Boyfriend does and he was born and raised in The City.

    'Frisco is what non locals say.

    Of course it's OK. It's more of an urban myth really, that locals id tourists with the use of those phrases. It's easier to id tourists in summer cuz there the only ones wearing shorts and t-shirts.
