Thumbs up Doing your part for our planet

Ok so asking people to boycott the pump didn't work, although DH and I are still doing it.

What are you doing to help with the environment? Are you going green? How?

We are growing our own veggies again this year. No flowers, just veggies that I can freeze.

Our thermostat is OFF, we will use fans as long as possible till we are in desperate need of the AC.

We no longer buy pre-packed meats. We go to a butch who uses unlined butcher paper.

We buy in bulk, less plastic packaging. We look for cardboard or paper first.

Hanging our laundry to dry. DH is not thrilled about it, he got stung by a wasp on the ass as a kid after his mom hung the laundry out.

Full load in the dishwasher, air dry the dishes.

Cold water in the washer only

No more paper plates or cups.

We bring our own containers for take out. Some places understand, some do not.

DH is trying to carpool with a guy that works most of the same days he does. I cannot, but I use a tank of gas in 2 weeks. I would carpool if some one worked the same place I do and lived where I do.

Cut back on the full baths. Showers most of the time and we have low flow shower heads.

Bricks in the toilet. Less water but still works like it should.

We reuse what plastic water bottles we have, I am no longer buying anymore.

That's what we are doing. How about you?

Wow, that is amazing. how long have you two been doing this. do you save more money or is it about the same. How have your friends reacted to your go greener lifestyle? Have your or DH been getting mocked at by coworkers? It must take alot of inner strength to push forward in something you believe in.

by the way, reusing plastic water bottles in not to safe. I saw it on the news sometime ago. good luck to you both.

Most of the list we have been doing for a few years, some we are starting this year.

Why would we be mocked? A lot of people I know do most of the same things. I live in a farming community so it's not unusual to see wash on the line. Everyone here has a veggie garden and uses the same butcher. I don't understand how we would be mocked.

If it's not safe to reuse plastic water bottles, is it safe to drink out of them in the first place?

We have saved money. By turning our thermostat down, our gas bill for the month is $60. The gas runs the dryer, heats the water, the dishwasher uses it, and we have a gas stove. During the winter, it can get around $250 only because I like a warm house. I have a goal to keep it around 60 this winter, not 75.

ty PB! If I get cancer, it's going to be from smoking, not a water bottle.

Not carcinogens, but endocrine disruption to worry about:

    It's always something.

If you lived in a non-farming area, it's likely you'd be accused of being a hippie or some such nonsense. At least in NJ. I was mocked by the grocery bagger for buying and using the reusable bags that they sell right there at the store. Jerks.

We reuse all the paper bags...no plastic.

We grow our own veggies and trade off with neighbors/friends for veggies we don't grow (so we'll give them tomatoes for cucumbers, or whatever). Our other veggies come from a local organic, sustainable farm.

Our meats come from a local organic, free-range farm that is butchered for us. They use earth friendly wraps, etc.

We bought a whole house fan and use that instead of the A/C during the summer months. The only time we turn on the air is when it gets so hot and humid outside and doesn't cool off much at night. But, even then, we only cool the house off enough to be comfortable, not to feel like we live in an ice-chest.

We use organic fertilizer on everything. We use natural pesticides around the house (so a water/cayenne pepper mixture around the doorways, etc).

We recycle everything we can. This year, we're investing in a nice composting bin (it'll be great for the garden!!) to put kitchen scraps. Otherwise, everything we buy is mainly recycled (it also keeps our garbage collection costs down).

I like a warm house, but don't like the gas bill. So, we keep the temp at around 68 degrees and anyone who wants to be warmer is welcome to put on some more layers.

We have to drive to the store currently as we live in an unincorporated area, but we do have a lake/beach/park a few minutes from our house which we frequent in the summer months...we always walk there.

The plants/shrubs/etc that we have in our landscaping are native so that they need low maintenance (no large amounts of watering).

We have a reverse osmossis drinking system in our house. We use this in place of bottled water. We do not buy bottled water at all anymore.

We are also putting eco-flooring down in our house this summer, replacing our A/C and furnace with a brand new, top of the line, high efficiency one. Our new appliances will also be brand new high efficiency, as well.

Hmmm...that's all I can think of for now.

Oh, we have water barrels at the end of our downspouts. They collect rainwater and you can hook up a hose to them and use that to water plants, etc instead of using water from the hose.
