    Default Gin Martinis

    This may sound silly....

Someone please tell me the appeal of gin martinis. I know they are one of the most popular, classic cocktails in history.....just holding a martini glass makes me feel all 1950's glamorous.....but that aura is quickly lost when I discover they taste like ass.
Now, as a bartender, I've been told I make a killer martini, but seriously, I feel like loser. I consider myself a conisseuer (spelling?)of fine alcoholic beverages but my avoidence of all things gin make me feel like a fraud.

    So what's the deal?
    Is gin an aquired taste?
Or all the gin martini lovers out there just fakin' it?

I've never had a gin martini. I do like apple martini's though.

I drank gin straight once. Bleh My bf got me hooked on tanqueray and tonic. I like it with extra lime.

I like dirty Martini's but the original Martini is made from Gin and everyone has different taste buds and what may taste good to one may taste like ass to another.

It's all a matter of taste. I am not a big fan of gin, either. It tastes like carrot peelings smell. I swear.

I love gin. Make your martini with a sweet vermouth and NO OLIVES, just a lemon or a lime twist. The olive brine is what makes a martini taste nasty. Sweet vermouth cuts the alcohol taste and brings out that clean, minty, juniper flavor in the gin.

a dirty gin martini shaken not stirred is one of the finest refreshing beverages out there.

i prefer even regular gin martinis shaken, though. gin always can use the ice.

I have to be in the mood. Never ever without olives. But I'm an olive fiend. I buy jars of them to just eat.

The first time I had one I nearly gagged though.

You gotta have the right alcohol to make a good martini. I prefer sapphire, some people prefer Tanqueray. It's all upon taste.

^^^ I do not like Tanqueray for some reason. Even the ghetto well gin tastes better than Tanqueray.

I've tried gin martinis with sweet vermouth, and I never liked them. Straight gin is too industrial, much like striaght vodka. 3/4 gin and 1/4 dry vermouth works for me. Tanqueray or Bombay gin ususally taste best. I like adding a few olives, too. Adding olive brine makes it too salty.

I think the same think about scotch. I decided people that drink quickly drink scotch because you have to drink it slow. I dunno.

I don't like gin martinis, either... but I haven't had enough to really know, I guess. Try Hendrix gin. It has a more mellow flavor. I use it when I make gin and tonics and use a slice of cucumber instead of lime.

I ain't too fond of gin..

Martini's in general, kinda ecccchhh. I went to a martini bar once, sampled about four different kinds.. one of which the Appletini so I could pretend I was on Scrubs. I really didn't like any of them.

I try many different things, but I always go back to my Jack and Coke.

I hate gin. Of course, my idea of a martini is straight vodka shaken over ice with olive juice.
