Hmm. Could be worse. It's pretty moderate compared to the goddamn Dr. Phil episodes!!
oh that aired a few months back.. it was actually a good piece...
I was actually impressed that they chose to interview someone who really has her shit together instead of finding someone to reinforce the negative stereotypes like so many other talk shows do.

I liked that show. I was impressed with the way Oprah handled the topic, and I liked the lady they chose to come onto the show. They displayed it in a fairly positive manner.

^ Agreed. I watched it and the lady really had herself together and Oprah handled the topic very well.

It's about time that dancers are shown in a positive light. Society always loves to display the negative. Dancers, doing drugs, extras, etc. They eat that crab up.

Ditto on everyone else.
I can totally relate to some of the statements the woman made too. Sometimes I look around the club and feel so strange. Other days I wouldn't trade this experience for the world. Seems like it was a good piece!

Good for her! I read through the slides, but never saw the interview. I'm sure the show portrayed her in a positive light, but I really hope they didn't portray her as an anomaly just because she has her shit together. Or just because she's doing it to support her children.
Either way, she IS a lot of strippers we know.
This just reaffirms that Oprah is pretty freaking awesome.
Oprah '08!![]()

Honestly though, it seems like most of these shows seem to say that it's okay if you're a mom trying to support her family or a girl working her way through school.
I don't fit into either category, and it seems like I'm constantly defending myself to customers who want to know if
1) I'm working my way through school (nope - graduated)
2) I'm supporting kids (nope - no kids)
It's like options 1 and 2 are the only reasons why I would do this job and not be morally bankrupt.![]()

That's so inspiring that she depicted stripping in a positive light. I'm not an Oprah fan, but I give her huge kudos for that.

I like how Oprah seems to want to just open people's minds. She's awesome.
at least we all didn't get painted as the whore of babylon again with it.
but to whoever said we "have to be either a mom or in school to do this without being morally bankrupt" is right, it sucks that you can't just have the job you have because you enjoy some part of it.

^^^ so true. I bet that if more women had body confidence, they'd be doing it too. A lt of the women I know (who've never danced naked for money) are envious of the women who've had to balls to do it.
I never even thought of it as a ballsy thing to do, but I guess in a lot of people's minds it is.
I think a lot of people hide behind the supposed moral issue of it. Not everyone (e.g., religious-types). But a lot of people.

My favorite is, "Why don't you get a real job!?" UM... what is not real about stripping? I don't even get that question... I guess they think it's "easy," but they should try climbing a pole...

Not So Fast! Oprah has said that "No one would actually want to strip for strange men! For your mate, sure but not for a bunch of strange men." She's not pro-stripping at all. She sees it as a difficult somewhat skeevy sacrifice that most young women reall shouldn't make.

I knew the truth had to come out eventually. I am so not an Oprah fan, and although I thought the readup and slides didn't do the Tyra and Dr. Phil bashing of strippers I didn't want to give kudos to Oprah just yet.
Oprah's bread and butter viewers aren't strippers. I'm glad to see a tasteful representation of dancers, but Oprah particularly used this woman because so many of her viewers fit into her demographic (middle-aged Caucasian woman, stay at home mom, single mom, divorcee, etc.)
Had she been a high school drop out or a teenage mom with bills to pay this story would not have even been on Oprah or it would have turned into a "save this child" saga.
Oprah's an ass just like all the rest of these talk show hosts. Holla![]()
To give credit where it is due, Lisa Ling was actually the one who interviewed the woman. Oprah did have a bit of a raised eyebrow during the story, so I'm not going to say she was oh so openminded about it.
