Default is dancing 3 nights a week enough cardio?

everyone talks about how cardio is what makes you drop the lbs and you should do that before bothing with things like pilates, or at least thats from what i understand.

isnt dancing 3 nights a week at work enough cardio? i love dancing but cant run (i suck at it, get side stitches, and my knees are bad) and i dont know what other kinds of cardio i could do...

i want to get a mini pilates ball and start doing crunches and all that buisness, but if its not going to help me shed a couple inches, then i dont see the use.

if anyone wants to coach me in working out pm me, i know nothing of this sort of thing.

first off, no, you dont need to do cardio first and then wait on pilates etc. you need to do them together. yes it is true that you could do 1000 crunches a day but if you have a layer of fat over top, it wont matter. which is why cardio is important.. but you need both. you can alternate days, or do a workout thats a combination. like i do pilates then run a mile for one workout, or i have a kickboxing dvd thats crazy intense cardio mixed with strength training intervals. interval training is pretty popular these days, so you can get it all in with one workout.

the reason dancing isnt enough cardio is bc youre not keeping your heart rate up for a long enough period of time. yeah it helps and its great but how many times do you really feel like your heart rate is raised in a night? how long are you sweating? how high is your heart rate, really? dancing in your living room for a half hour would be good cardio. dancing on stage 5 times a night for 10 mins isnt bc its so broken up that you arent getting the same benefit.

I doubt it because it's not really like upbeat dancing for a good amount of time.

thanks for the detailed reply! can you reccomend a dvd that had the mixed interval training?

i live on a second floor apartement, i just dont want to sound like im bringing the roof crashing down on my neighbors, lol.

also is running a mile equal to walking a mile? i can walk all day...

It probably also depends on your area and club. For instance, last night I was on stage for about a third of the 6 hours I was there, dancing fairly quickly and doing pole tricks. That's besides doing dances.

If you work at a club where you're not on stage much and where the dancing style is slower, I wouldn't consider it enough.

Running and walking a mile burn the same amount of calories, but walking isn't as aerobically challenging.

yeah i do pole tricks, and dance quite a bit throughout most nights. and we are a no straddling club so its mostly all on your feet, not sitting on a couch gyrating...

it must not be enough becuase i feel fat and want to drop about 10 lbs.

no, running isnt equal to walking, haha. otherwise people would take the easy route and walk! walking is definately exercise, you can powerwalk, make sure youre walking uphill instead of on a flat surface, etc, but results will be greater with running. your body is just working harder.

some dvds that i like are:
    http://www.amazon.com/Tracey-Mallett...1938054&sr=8-5
(if you dont like kickboxing, dont bother, haha. i think it's fun though bc its not too repetitive.)

    http://www.amazon.com/Jillian-Michae...1938172&sr=8-1
this has intervals of 3 mins cardio, 2 mins strength, 1 min abs. you repeat for 3 intervals with diff exercises each time. i dont know honestly how effective it is since its short but i know that its hard and sure makes me feel like i worked out really really hard.

I doubt it unless you are doing 20-30 minutes at a time of fast dancing nonstop.

Unfortunately, no it doesn't. Running requires a lot more movement, not to mention it's much quicker movement. I wish it did though, I'd be out walking all the time!

Actually, it pretty much does. It just takes longer to walk. I'm talking calories burned per mile here, not per minute or whatever. It burns about 100 calories to either walk or run a mile.

Edit: never mind, I read that many years ago and just found a source that says that running burns more. Here's the newer article I found: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/...8402-0,00.html

I don't remember where I read the thing about running one mile burning the same amount of calories as walking. Hmm.

Can you use an elliptical machine? I can't run either thanks to stripper-induced knee pains, but I get a great, low-impact cardio workout on the elliptical.

This isn't dancing like what we do in canada huh. Like 6 nights a week 3-10 18 minute shows. That's like 54-180 minutes of cardio and stretching/polework combined.

Lol....I can't afford an elliptical, for sure. They have tons of them at most gyms. It's kind of like a gazelle, but not quite. You can use your arms or not, and your feet move in an elliptical shape. I only mentioned it because I burn 400-600 calories per hour (measured heart rate, my stats programmed in), depending on intensity, with buggered up knees and a wacky back.

For me, it is. Between doing stage twice a night and doing lapdances I stay in great shape and have also built a lot of muscle. I was 140 at 5'2 when I first started and got down to 108 within a few months. No joke.

I was way too thin though and wasn't happy with my body. And I ate like a pig too and couldn't gain weight for the life of me. So I started drinking a lot of milk, eating peanut butter and drinking protein shakes and now I'm at 115, which is perfect for me.

It all depends on your club though. How often you go on stage and how many dances you do a night matters a lot. If just dancing isn't working for you, I highly recommend ellipticals-they'll get you where you want to be in no time.

I have to run a minimum of five days a week on a tread mill and I work nights, 3 to 4 nights a week.

I also do weights three days a week. Just working at the club is not a good enough work out for me..........but I LOVE to eat naughty foods . Tasty Cakes!!!!! Yum!!!!

Scarlett.Oz, even that kind of Thunder Bay extreme dancing doesn't quite take the place of hard cardio.

Dancing is certainly excercise, and anything that raises your heart rate is cardio excercise, but how long are you actually dancing for? It's not really comparable to running or going on the elliptical for 35 min. Dancing will burn calories and tire you out, for sure, but if you tend to put on weight easy, you really need to SWEAT and breathe hard, get your heart pounding, that kind of workout- for it to be good cardio.

For someone like me, who is naturally predisposed to be kind of thicker, dancing isn't enough. I have to run as well. And running really does burn more calories, mile to mile, than walking. The faster you run, the greater the difference. You can try it for yourself- run a mile on a treadmill that counts calories, fast as you can, and then walk it. You can see the difference.

breathe- how about swimming? It's not that hard to find a community gym with swim times, especially during the day if you're a stripper. Once you're in the pool, no one can see your body. It's easy on the joints, and I find it much less intimidating body-conscious wise than the gym. Nobody is watching my boobs bounce on the machines when I'm in the water, lol.

I will add that once I up my cardio like crazy, unless I start pigging out, it amazes me how much slimmer I get. I got on the scale recently for the first time in weeks and I was shocked, I thought the thing was broken. I've not been dieting at all, just running, and I've lost ten pounds.

One thing that I do that you might like as well is this routine:

Have an mp3 player with good upbeat songs. Tell yourself you'll do 3 songs on the treadmill, 3 on the bike, and 3 on the elliptical (or stairmaster, or rowing machine, or w/e). That will ensure you get between 20 minutes to a half hour of solid working out, plus you'll be switching it up so it's not boring.

In addition, I would advocate interval training! Every 1 minute you run, walk 30 seconds fast, and sprint 30 seconds. Or whatever suits your personal fitness needs.

I get bored of cardio easily but this'll make it easier tolerate. Plus I pick sexy-ish songs so I can daydream about sex or an awesome fantasy stage show while I run!

Agreed! I used to run on the treadmill before I started dancing, but with knee pains theres no way in hell that will happen anymore! So I use the elliptical at my gym and everything is peachy If you don't want to get a gym membership you could work a few extra days to buy one...they aren't terribly expensive unless your looking for the big macho flashy ones. I found one here for <300

Heres the main page if you want to get serious and shop 4 one
