Default Threw my back out, can't stay off it

So yesterday I had the bright idea to do lots and lots of crunches.

I've never managed to hurt my back doing crunches before, but apparently yesterday was special.

And I've hurt it badly, too -- can't stand up straight without pain, etc. It came on about twelve hours after exercising.

Over the next couple of days I have to pack up suitcases and prepare for my return to the US. There's no putting this off or resting, 'cos I have to get out of here. A lot of it is packed and I won't have to tow the really heavy bags initially, but I will have to do a lot of bending over.

What are some tips for avoiding further damage under these circumstances? I'm taking NSAIDs + the Chinese equivalent, and MSM, though unfortunately haven't got enough with me to up my dose. I'm also moving slowly like an old lady and I took a nap flat on my back a bit earlier, hasn't helped much though. Anything else I should do? I'm a bit freaked out that I'm going to have permanent pain from this. I've thrown my back out twice in the last year, nearly as badly but not quite, but both times I got to rest it for a few days.

    Go to a chiropractor?

Go to a chiropractor and never work just your abs. You do your ab work and then you do your lower back work and ab, back. Otherwise you overbuild some muscles and the opposing muscles become weaker and things like this happen.

For now, definitely lift with your legs and not your back. If you can find a strong guy or 2 to help with the move, that would be better.

If it's still new, do alternating cold/hot compresses on the muscles. Take an Epsom salt bath. Massage the area.

Does it feel like muscle pain? Or is it joint (misplaced spine) pain?

Take some Aleve (naproxin sodium) every 12 hours to help with the inflammation.
If it's muscle pain, it's normal that it cam on 12 hours after. You should be feeling better in a day or two when the muscles rebuild themselves.

If it doesn't get better by then, go to see a chiropractor!

    Hope you feel better soon
