    Default Shy puppy advice, please?

I just brought home a 4 month old shar-pei mix puppy from the shelter. I named her Cora Belle, she's incredibly cute and sweet, but very shy. I talked to the lady at the shelter and she said Cora is shy until she warms up to you.

I went out this morning and bought her a cute pink dog bed, new toys, the whole shebang. We came home and she went and laid underneath a chair and I just let her be for about an hour so she could adjust. She's very calm and I haven't heard a noise out of her yet! I just went in and was talking to her, and picked her up and carried her over to the dog bed and she laid down and I was petting her for about 10 minutes and talking to her and offered her a toy. As soon as I got up, she went and laid back under the chair.

Should I just let her be, and she'll be social when she is ready or should I keep working with her? She also isn't good on a leash yet so I'll need to work on the leash thing with her.. Any advice?

You have to be social with the dog and get it used to people so that it doesn't cower when company comes or anyone that comes in your house.

I just brought home a pit bull puppy about 2 weeks ago who is 2 months old and he was the same way (yes a pit bull can cower) and you just have to keep being social with it.

From my experience that is with 2 others.

If people heard the way I talk to my dogs (pitbulls), they would question my manhood.

Socialization is very imprtant for a puppy. Take her out, show her cars, strangers, take her through the drivethrough at Mc Donalds. Take hr to the park and show her other dogs. My puppy was also very shy at first. As for leash training, I had a hell of a time...my puppy was to scared of everythign outside and refused to walk.
Go to Cesar Milan's website and read how he teaches dogs to walk on a leash. That's how I did it after having such a hard time with my puppy. ( But as he was a small dog, I took extreme caution and did NOT pop his leash. Just a soft tug to get him walking. Puppy's have very soft, sensitive necks and you can damage them) I had him leash trained in about 2 weeks after learning how to do it.
