    Default recession tips

Not sure if this is the right place to post this or dollar den. But I was just reading stripping general about the recession. Can we start a thread( or is there one) about tips on how to get by? I know there is such a thing as cheapskate monthly- but the girls here are SMART. And truthfully I'm worried and could use some fresh tips!!!!
For instance I would completely ride a motorcycle to work except the safety issue of leaving the club (weirdos & having cash on me) also two saddlebags isn't enough for all my shit.
Or turning off the cable and internet at the house.
Getting a roomate/ cheaper place to live.
At this point since i don't have to yet I refuse to work 24-7. Especially b/c if this gets worse I will have to and I'm postponing that as long as possible.
    So what do you say?

    Here's a tip:

Your cable tv bill...what they don't advirtise is that there is a local channels only package for abotu $10 a month. You have to ask for it, it isnt listed or advertised. This is what I did when I lived alone. Also, use Skype for long distance calls and just keep a basic home phone line for $15 a month. Bu a prepaid cell for emergencies and keep it in your car. Most people dont actually NEED to keep a cell on their ear 24.7.

Collect coupons, search the sunday paper for sales then go 1 day a week to grocery shop. Check out discount food stores like Aldi or Food for less. Great deals. Find a discount bread store. Many cities have them..all the day old bread goes there and is sold for more than 50% cheaper. It's only 1 day old bread and is still good for several days, longer if you freeze it right away.

Get dial up internet. Can be as cheap as $10 a month! Sure, its slow and a PITA, but it is such a money saver....espicially if you just use the net for surfing, so what if it takes a minute for a page to load.

I third Skype!!! I wish I didn't have to have fucking cable here Kids require it!

    My other tips.

Shop Aldis for everything you can get away with
    Indoor small garden (herbs etc)
good time to cut out soda and begin taking in more water!
One word --- casseroles! Makes about 3 days worth of food/leftovers
City transportation more often Or ride your bike/walk/jog
Leave your windows open as soon as it peaks over 65, with fans going. This will keep your flat cool and ward off the AC
Steal wireless!!!! Seriously this is why a new mac is incredible. I can find a signal damn near anywhere.

This isn't exactly a big secret, but I would try the dollar stores in your area. Some even have food; I don't usually buy things like milk or bread there, but they have tons of household products and off-brand cereals, canned stuff, snacks, etc.

I also recently invested in a Vespa scooter; it's definitely not for everyone but it gets 90 miles to the gallon and my insurance and payments on it combined are about 80 dollars a month. Mine is not a motorcycle so it only goes about 45 mph but it's amazing for getting around town with; I save so, so much on gas. I'm sorry, I am just really excited about my scooter and looking for an excuse to mention it

Oooh yes Dollar Tree stores = rawk. Most have Morning Star burgers too for those that are Veggie. I've been lucky to find them (the big packs) before. Their other stuff like hygiene crap isn't worth it honestly. Although anything is better than bleeding and stanking up the place.

hopefully showing my tits will keep me in the clear.

Alberto VO % shampoo and conditioner. It's cheap as fuck. As low as .70 cents. and it works well. COnditioner makes my hair soft and smooth, smells wonderful.

The knock off Suave shampoos and conditioners are I thnk $1.00 a bottle, and they really are good knock offs of the more expensive brands. I've used the Humectress kind and was happy.

Go to a discount food store and buy a 20 pack box of mac n cheese for $5.99. that shit will last forever. If your exceptionally ambitious, buy a 24 pack box of ramen noodles for 2.99. You will eat for a month....( not well, but if youre really really poor... some food is better than no food)

Save on your electric bill: Close the blinds tight in the day to keep the sunlght and heat out. Open blinds and windows at night to let the cool in. In the Am before it gets hot, close everything up and turn on the fans. You shoudl be able to keep the house cool all day wihout running the AC unless your in the dead of summer. Then just kick the AC on for a while to cool the house down and kick the fan back on. In the winter it's easy..just wear more clothes.

Turn the lights off and use more candles. they smell pretty, look pretty and save you money.

Check the air pressure in yoru tires. too low or to much air will change yoru gas milage. Also get a tune up.

I fourth Skype! And have only a cell, not a home line, cause I don't need one anymore. I don't have a tv either, and do just fine, so that could be a big money saver.

Peanut Butter mentioned the Suave shampoos. After reading many reviews on I bought the tropical coconut Suave shampoo and love it. Also, the same thing goes for smooth and silky Tresemme conditioner. Great stuff! Although I do alternate with salon brands.

Dollar stores are amazing. I've found the exact same products offered at dollar stores at other stores for 3x's the price. Check your weekly drugstore flyers online. I especially watch for things like detergent of other staples that you know you'll always need. Stock up when on sale. For example, Tide is normally about $9 and I wait til it's on sale to but it at $5-6 and buy a few at a time.

Doing research about products before you buy them helps. I'm in the market for a new pair of stylish flat shoes, so I've checked for the review on shoes I like esthetically. I have very sensitive feet, and a closetful of expensive shoes that have been worn once because they were uncomfortable, so I'm hoping this will help to weed out the uncomfortable ones. Same with , or . Decide what's worth buying before you drop the money.

edited to add: is another site that's great for reviews.

I don't have cable either, and don't miss it because all of my fav shows are available to watch online, absolutely free.

Get a drying rack or use a clothesline to dry your clothes. I have room for neither, so I hang my laundry on hangers, lined up on the shower rack.

I like this thread. i've been trying to be extra frugal for the last 6 months or so, trying to pay off some debt/save. So here are my tried and true tips
~Work an extra shift a week. Seriously. If it is slow at your club, you want to be there in case it gets good/busy. If it doesn't, mediocre nights will still add up.
~Stop buying stupid shit you don't need. This one was really hard for me, but I have been able to cut back a lot of my unnecessary spending.
~Do thinks to increase your gas mileage-ie, don't speed, most cars get better gas mileage at 55.
~Use the public library for books/internet/magazines.
~There is a thread around here somewhere about eating for cheap that people might find helpful.
~This isn't a savings tip, per se, but sometimes if I have extra money after bills, savings goals, etc, etc, I will stock up on stuff I know I need like makeup, shampoo, etc. If you end up having a crappy month or something, even though it's not that expensive, it's still nice to already have stuff you need, so you don't have more stuff to buy when you're not doing well financially.
    ~shop sales, clip coupons....
~Shop wholesale stores, like sams club.

I had a big problem with this for many years. I didn't even realize how much money I had been wasting stupid shit I didn't really need until recently! Starting the begining of this year, I've been keeping a spreadsheet of EVERYTHING I buy. Everytime I spend $2 on fast food, fill up with gas, buy a new pair of shoes - everything gets on that spreadsheet and is categorized (so things like food and care related expenses are necessities, as opposed to things like entertainment and toys). I just keep my receipts in my wallet an every 2-3 days I update the spreadsheet. Knowing that I was going to have to write it down and look at it the rest of the month has really made me think twice before buying things I don't need. Instead of, for example, going shopping when I'm bored just for the sake of shopping, I'll go do something that won't increase that sum on my spreadsheet.

It does take some extra maintenance, but I've really found that to be a useful way to curb my spending and increase my savings.

Learn to cook a bit...it's fun,can be healthier, and save bunches!

I am amaed at what people spend on eating out and the quality of a lot of the food.

Check out Rachel Ray (I know...she's annoying but she is good too!) for fast recipes that you can make in large batches like "stoops" and soups, pasta dishes,etc...make a big batch when you have time and then bag up for later!

I just got a HUGE bin of fresh strawberries at Sam's today for less than 20 bucks, washed and cut them up into 7 large ziplocks and will now be able to enjoy them for weeks!

Also don't be afraid to try the "lesser brands" of nail polish,remover,etc...you can get a large bag of stuff at Sally beauty that rocks for less then one or two items at the department store!

The grocery store "Milani" nail polish is better than Chanel,IMO...

This is real ghetto but some places like Subway you can work like 8 hours a week, seriously and still get free (or 10 cent) subs for you and your spouse. Me and my boyfriend realized that and he got a job there and we ate good and free everyday for a few months. I was even going to work there when he left but the needed night hours and I knew I could make more stripping than the free food/pay combined.

Right now we get free phone, internet, and advanced cable because my BF works at a Time Warner equivalent.

I'm really thinking about getting a food service job or a clothing one for the benefits.

ETA: usually you can steal WiFi. Before my BF got this job thats what I did. I don't do any gaming or anything but aim and reading so it's not like I'm really slowing anyone down.

^yup. Try "password", "mine", "not yours". Actually 9/10 times I needed a password I just typed something in and it worked....most people don't know what their doing. It's pretty easy to get around.

Another one I've used is waiting to eat till you get to the club and have the guy buy you something. Then at the end of the night have a guy buy you some more food and ask the kitchen to save it for you in the fridge and take it home. Or just split your meals with another girl.

Instead of getting dialup, look at DSL deals in your area. I only pay $30 a month for my DSL and I don't have cable. Qwest runs "Such-and-such price for life" deals all the time.

Also, get Netflix and watch your favorite shows on DVD instead of going to Blockbuster. If you have a DVD burner, you can also get quite a collection.

Switch to the fluorescent spiral light bulbs and make a point of turning things off at night and turning lights off except in the room you're in.

Take up reading and buy books at used book stores, like Half Price.

Go to movies at matinees instead of prime time.

    Save on food bill:
    Takes some time and patience....

On sunday, look through the ads and see what's on sale and where. Based on those ads and whatyour family eats, plan out yoru weekly menu. Know what yrou going to cook for dinner each day of the week. Create your grocery listbased on your menu and what's on sale. Then go through the sunday paper for coupons and clip the coupons for the food on yrou grocery list. Then go online and search for more coupons. Print them out and take them with you. Shop on Sunday evening or monday afteryou've got everythign planned out. Go to the different grocery stores in yrou area for the different sales, espciailly if one place has a particularly good sale. I love those 10 for 10 deals, espiciall yif you have coupons for that product. All the coupon clipping and menu plannign takes time..but you can save so much on your food bills...this is how a family of 4 has a $200 a month grocery bill....
I am going ot start doing thigns this way when I move, because right now we are 2 people and our food bill is well over 400 a month, and we eat out several days a week in addition to grocerys.
