So, were going camping on Thursday for 10 days. Gonna be roughin it... uhm, kinda, anyway..

Wondering if anyone has input on what to take besides the basics. You know, that thing that when you go the other people with yuo say "OMG Im sooo glad you brought that" or whatever.

We have basics along with tiki torches, volleyball, horseshoes, ya know but anything else I should bring along?!

    bug spray.

I went camping once in my life. next to a river. had about 102849874578 mosqito bites. was miserable for abotu 2 weeks after that.

oh, I also had the great idea to run through the woods in flip flops, and I got a stick stuck between my tooes. Not like a splinter, but a stick. nice puncture wound.

extra tp. estimate how much tp you'll need and double it. Cause nothings worse than going to take a poop and realizing that your out of tp after you've already sat down.

marshmellows, gram crackers and hersheys bars.

Always remember the compass, the matches and flint if you have to.

And a book on which foods are edible in the wild is useful.

    SMORES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gotta love em

The mosquitos are what I got the tiki torches for.... citronella - have 12 of em to put all around the campsite.

Owie on the flip flops. I just bought those watersocks for the fam (+1, taking Lily) - theyre ugly but I wouldnt camp without them.

Were actually going to be at campgrounds and there are toilets - its a LONG walk but its there. Its not so much wilderness camping as its going to a home away from home (on the river). I got the coolest tent today

Im trying to find more people to go... weve got B, Me, the kid, Lily, bro, sis in law, their best friend. I want MORE PEOPLE!

Don't sleep with your food. Put it in those metal boxes.

Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

Not to alarm you or anything, but if you have a firearm bring it with you. People keep their doors locked at home and still keep one. A campsite is not a secure place. Be sure if any kids are going with you, they do not have access to it. When I went on long roadtrips with my family as a kid, my father would keep a gun under his seat just incase.

Bring glasses if you have contacts, LOTS of solution and allergy relief ESPECIALLY catered to smoke.

Last time I went some ash or something got in my eye and irritated the hell out of it, normal contact solution was not cutting it. Once I got home I got some allergy stuff and it cleared up soon enough but the 18 hour drive home was awful...it's a must have!

^ If your camping in a tent, there isn't really a safe place to keep a firearm that you would still have fast access to it if needed. If there were a reason to use a firearm, time would be of the essence, no time to load it. It would have to stay loaded and within easy reach, espicialy at night. I can't think of a safe way to do that, espicially because I woudl assume her 9 year old daughter will be sleeping in the tent next to her.

In this case, I think having a gun could cause more harm than good. Keeping pepper spray handy might be a safer option....

An air mattress cuz know matter how smooth you think you made the ground under your tent, there will be a lone rock which will end up in the small of your back at some point in the night.

Ah. We do have a first aid kit but calamine is something thats not in it. Good one. I did get a snake kit today and one of those venom suckers for wasps, snakes, yellow jackets, etc and sting be gone stuff.

The kids have their own tent but I still dont like the idea of guns. They scare me.

And food is in plastic tubs in a seperate area - one of those screened thingies... whatever theyre called.

I think as it is were pretty set... just need lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of booze. Did I mention lots of booze. Yea, that. Camping is soooo fun when youre drinking the whole time.

Oh, anyone know anything about rehydration salts? I was thinking about getting them because when we went camping last year my brother got so dehydrated from alcohol and the heat that he got really sick. But I dont know much about them.

I used to love camping as a kid. Used to go up to grass valley to camp.

Anyways my faves on the "I wish I brought that list"
    water proof bandaids
    moleskin
    whistle
*I second the air mattress. The ground can be really rocky underneath.
    Lantern flashlight/lamp
know what to do when you see a bear/wolf/mountain lion/other scary animal
    day hike list and map

You can also keep your cheese and other refrigerated items in the stream so they keep cold.

aww, this thread is making me jealous. Its been so long since I've been camping, me and my family used to do it all the time and I use to love it.

One thing I can definitly recommend from personal experience, depending on where you are going is that if its going to be even a little cold is to buy good sleeping bags that keep you warm. I went camping once and at night it got so cold that I remember waking up trembling, I wanted to cry it was so cold. So yea don't be stingy when it comes to great sleeping bags and maybe even warm blankets.

One of the best things I ever bought for camping is a bed frame for our air matress. it folds up like an accordian (sp) and comes in it's own bag. It keeps your matress about three feet off the ground, so you don't get the cold from the ground. No back aches in the morning either. In the morning I just make it up like a bed, instead of sleeping bags we bring a couple sets of sheets, a couple of blankets and a quilt. Oh and lots of pillows too.

I also like to bring a couple of dollar store throw rugs for the inside of the tent. This way no sand/dirt in the bed. Mmm... its like a little bit of home.

I have an idea, why don't you just go ahead and get an U-Haul truck and put everything in there. You can set up the bed in the back that way you don't have to bring a tent or air bed. At night just leave the back of the truck open, it'll sort feel like your camping.

    I like how you camp!

From my experience, I'd only camp one night in a tent. Anthing more than that, it's all about the RV.

lol... i will have the camera - ah. i have pics of our last camping trip (same place) on my myspace profile... not my dancing one but my other one. If anyone wants a like PM me and you can see how miserable I looked in every single photo. 110 in the shade and no shade at the camp spot = not a happy audrey. And at night... it cooled off to a whopping NINETY.

Oh, BTW, IM picking the spot this time and theres going to be a damn tree there.

This time weather is saying low 80s/upper 70s and 50s at night and that means when we go down to the river itll be chilly - because its around 20 degrees cooler by the water. This is going to be a much much better camping trip.

I've forgotten where Colfax is but we used to go swimming in some damn near GV. GV is very very boring -only fun to visit.
