Default Has anyone here been to Costa Rica?

I recently won a trip to Costa Rica. Going in the first two weeks of July...never been, don't know what to expect. I've got 4 days/5 nights free. Flying in to San Jose, staying on the Pacific coast/Herradura Bay.

Tips? Things I shouldn't miss? I'd normally plan a dive trip but I can't dive with my recently hacked-up nose. Other than that, I'm wide open for ideas.

    Take me! Take me!

Do the zip lines! I've never been but know people who have. I've only heard great things about trips there.

I went to CR a few years back.... AWESOME!!! Make sure you do some surfing
i used to dream militant dreams / of taking over america / to show these white folks how it should be done
i used to dream radical dreams / of blowing everyone away / with my perceptive powers of correct analysis
i even used to think / id be the one to stop the riot and negotiate the peace / then i awoke and dug
that if i dreamed natural dreams / of being a natural woman
doing what a woman does / when shes natural
    i would have a revolution

Been there @ 10 years ago...many Americans and ex-pats retire there,it's a truly wonderful place with super-nice people as a whole!
Excellent education, employment, and health-care...it's a country who has their act together,IMO.

Lots of clean, good food and fish too.

San Jose is another "big city" but once you get outta' there,it's just gorgeous...the roads are not the best but the beaches are nice and mostly very well maintained and the rainforest is great!
Lots of pineapple-plantations and a little bit of everything to see and do!

The fishing is exceptional! Tarpon and deep-sea especially! Depends on it you want to move around a bit or just beach it...

I'd probably see about doing a couple of "day trips" (probably wouldn't drive myself if I didn't have to...) so you could get a better feel of the diversity of the place!

Have fun! It's probably one of the easiest and nicest countries to visit...lots of "eco-tourism" currently too.

Here's the current news you should be aware of. Costa Rica has declared a state of emergency after ALMA and many communities are cut off completely, many people are homeless or staying in shelters. Don't plan on going to any of those northwestern areas down to the puntarenas area. The only area I can vouch for on the Pacific coast is Tambor since my friends say it missed them.

Bullshit, the water is completely safe. Check here to debunk some of the misconceptions about the country. www.therealcostarica.com

As fas as general safety, I'm ok there...I'm looking for advice more along the lines of "You HAVE to go see the cliffs of San Whatever" or "make sure you take a tour of the ______ jungle"

or how to negotiate prices, or whatever.

I second ziplines if you get a chance. I haven't been to Costa Rica but I did a zipline jungle tour in Cancun and it was amazing! Have fun and take lots of pictures

The Ziplines are amazing! The country is beautiful and zipping through it in the air is amazing. If you do anything, you need to do a zipline. The volcano's are also gorgeous, I spent an evening at a spa that is near one of the volcano's (punta arena maybe ?) and all the water is heated by it. At night it shot up a little lava, nothing in the world could match sitting in hot springs and watching lava shoot into the dark sky and then slide down the mountain. The beaches are nice and I'd look for a nice wild life park to check out, all kinds of cool animals.

There are a few places where the water is bad, but someone should tell you this beforehand.

Watch out for petty theft, a very safe place, but if you're careless something will get stolen.

Congratulations on your trip, how cool! I have heard only great things about Costa Rica, however since I have yet to go, I'm unable to offer any truly valuable advice. Have a blast though!

    OK ziplines....

1-I'm a big guy....not fat, I am tall and thus weigh more than average...about 240 right now (think football player). Do those ziplines hold weight?

2-I have a fear of heights...is that a problem, or will I be ok?

My Mom just returned from Costa Rica a week ago and was telling me of the rainforest she went through that was amazing. Juvenile monkeys came within 3 feet of her. Her husband loved the golf course he golfed on which lined the rain forest. I

I'll ask her more details when I talk to her and report back.

She went on a fishing trip and every person caught sailfish and one caught a huge tuna.

One restaurant she said was amazing wa an ex drug czar's palace that is turned into a resort. That was the most expensive dinner the group had with the bill totaling $100 for 4 ppl, including wine.

Most dinners were under $25 when she brought her own wine and she said the fish pieces were huge and service was exceptional.

I think you're fine.. There were quite a few hefty people in our group (not saying you're hefty) and they were alright. Some of them got stuck halfway through the zipline but that's probably also because they were braking.

As for the heights, I'm a huge freaking weiner when it comes to heights and I was totally fine. I even looked down several times and it was pretty cool. We did 11 ziplines, and honestly, you're going so fast and looking at the scenery that you won't even be thinking about heights.

I went to Costa Rica this January for 2 weeks. With 4 days and "tico time" you won't be able to do much, so I'd stick to things close to where you are. The public transportation is really cheap and easy to figure out, so that's what I used most the time. Some places I'd recommend.

*Playa conchal - it's a small beach just north of Tamarindo in Guanacaste which is beautiful and still not over-developed You can get a clean room there with A/C, fridge, queen bed, cable for $30-35. It's a good place for a day trip too. The picture of my feet is at this beach.

*La Fortuna - It's really touristy, but a great access point to a ton of activities, such as zip-lining, the volcano, rain forest tours, and hot springs. It's a 4 hour drive to/from san jose though. Rooms are about $20-$35 here too. If I could go back, I'd have set aside more time/money for activities here.

*Tamarindo- Personally, I hated Tamarindo. It's all yuppy tourists and everything is over-priced. It's a good beach for surfing, and shell collecting, but locals told me the water was contaminated with E. Coli. It just didn't feel like real Costa Rica to me : ( I went for New Years when all the locals go there to party.

I didn't make it to the caribbean side, but I've heard things that make me wish I had. Hope any of this can be of help.

    1. Won't be a problem at all

    2. They do it very gradually, and by the time you notice, you'll be half way over the line. Unless you are dealthy, like get paralyzed with fear, afraid then you'll be fine. It really wasn't that incredibly high where I went.

    OK Chrissy, you got it...lol...

I imagaine most of my time will be spent drinking, honestly. I am guessing at this point that I'll do a zipline tour, a trip to a volcano, some surfing, and a rain forest tour...

Was just there in March. Imperial is good beer

Didnt do a zipline bc it was a large place and felt very touristy like disneyland, but prob safer than some of the smaller places.

La Fortuna is great.. I didnt think it was too touristy, and the tourists that where there were pretty much there to do outdoorsy stuff. Most of the 'tours' offered, you can do on your own just drive there. GPS was very helpful. Fortuna/Arenal is the most active volcano I believe.

Also was at Nosara and the surf was Great. definately rent a board for $20 a day and give it a try. warm water, consistent waves, like nowhere in US. Its still being taken over by US surfers, but ok for a day or two.

Have fun... it may be a little rainy in the mornings in July FYI.

Boy I miss that tranquilo! Need to go back..
