    Default Q about oil changes

Forgive me, for I know nothing about cars...

Last time I went in to get my oil changed, they kept upgrading me to different products and offering different services. I'm not sure how much of it was actually necessary/helpful.

For example, is oil formulated for cars with 100,000+ miles on it worth it? They offered to flush things out, how often should that stuff really be done? Halp

They were just trying to upsell you IMO. Engine oil is pretty much engine oil. Check your owner's manual for the recommended type of oil, and tell the service people that's the type you want. You really don't need a special oil for a car with 100,000 miles. You should see something listed in the owner's manual like 5W-30, or 10W-40, those numbers stand for the grade of oil. They differ slightly from car to car, but in general motor oil is motor oil and most cars sold in the US use either 5W-30 or 10W-40.

The important thing is to have your oil changed on a regular basis, usually about every 6000 miles or every 6 months, whichever comes first. Oil breaks down, so the older it is, the less effective it is at keeping your engine well lubricated.

It depends what they're trying to sell you on. What exactly are they offering to "flush out"? Be aware, they are absolutely trying to sell you on as much as they can. If something is wrong with your car, take it to your trusted mechanic. If you just need an oil change, get that and the filter (of course). They should know what kind of oil to put into your car. (For example, I have 250k miles on my BMW, I use 15W-50.) Yes, you'll have to pay more for a higher grade oil. (I'm partial to Mobile 1)

All I gotta say is after you get your oil changed, check it yoruself before leaving the parking lot. Last time I got my oil changed, they told me I was 2 quarts low and had to pay extra for more oil. Well..I was not low on oil, they just ripped me off, and overfilled my car. to much oil is just as bad as not enough.

On oil, the number ratings are viscosity (its thickness). If a single number, say SAE 30, it means 30 is the viscosity of the oil at normal operating engine temperature. If it is say, SAE 10w30, the first number denotes viscosity when engine is cold. The lower the number the better (for when cold, the first number).

On normal oil (non-synthetic), you should change the oil every 3,000-3,500 miles...period. I have an oil change reading on my dash cluster, according to it, I would need to do an oil change every 7,500 miles or so. Not good.

Something overlooked on car maintenance is the tires. At every other oil change, get a rotation and balance (if using normal oil).

On synthetic oil, you will be fine going 5,000-6,000 on an oil change. This is what I do, every 6,000 miles, I pay about 60 bucks for it, and do the rotation and balance at this time. Total is about 110.00.

And you will be fine using the same oil filter for the 5-6,000 mile duration.

Regarding 100,000 miles air filters. WRONG. An air filter needs to be replaced when it is bad. There is no way of telling unless looked at, and I would suggest looking at it every oil change. Conditions vary too much even in same locales that some might go bad in 2 oil changes, some 6.

I prefer not to go to quick oil change places. They will try to hustle you. Find a good mechanic shop and have them do it. I use Goodyear. The first one I used I left because of the problems they were causing me. I went to another, they are great.

Also, every 30,000 miles, buy a fuel injector cleaner and use it on your car (for fuel injected cars). You add this to the gas tank and fill up with gas.

Cars have other things that need maintenance, transmission, transaxle/ rear differential. When varies, so look at your owners manual. They use 'oil' that needs to be changed.

But also you radiator (flush and fill term is generally used for this).

Also, on the oil change, pay up for the 'look at and fill all fluid levels.

Check your tire pressure once a month.

I would not use 100,000 mile oil. Unnecessary. If anything, go with a SAE 0w viscosity oil as the first number. i.e. 0w30.

Too much oil is worse for your engine than low oil.

And regarding the owners manual, make sure it is the manufacturers owners manual, not the dealers service manual you get your information from. If I followed the dealers service manual, I would be doing oil changes every 3000 miles, along with adding oil additives, fuel stabilizers, etc..

    Yes, dealers are overrated.

EDIT:::: NEVER use synthetic oil on a new car until after you have put the first 1,500 miles on it.
