    Default Animal welfare/puppy mills

So yesterday I was browsing around on this site:

I watched a documentary a few months ago where an animal rights activist went undercover and worked at a puppy mill. It absolutely broke my heart. The dogs are crammed in tiny cages, overbred, don't have fresh water or enough food and are treated like shit. Just do a google image search for puppy mill if you want to see the sad results. I'll spare you, and not post pictures here.

On that website, there is a link for state laws regarding puppy mills and dog sales:

I'm in Texas and there are NO laws regarding inspections or licensing for breeders and kennels. Texas is one of the states that gets the most complaints about breeders. This really, really infuriates me. Instead of sitting here wishing the dogs in puppy mills had better living conditions, I'm going to do something about it.

My question is, how do I go about this? I know I can lobby for better laws etc, and I plan on doing that. But, that's not enough for me, it takes a long time for laws to be put into effect if they even make it that far. The longer it takes, the more dogs are mistreated and the more die. What else can I do? There is a pet store in a local mall, and I was wondering if I could go in there and pretend to be interested in purchasing a puppy and asking to see paperwork on where the dog came from.. if it looks fishy or I suspect the puppies come from a puppy mill I could take it a step farther and maybe contact the humane society for help?

Does that sound like a good idea? Does anybody else have any other ideas for finding bad breeders and puppy mills around my area? Even if you don't, I encourage you to please at least look over that website, and if you want to adopt a dog, check your local shelter(s) first or at least thoroughly research a breeder before buying a dog and inspect the dog's living conditions. This needs to be stopped.

I support animal causes, as much as I can. I recently got an email from
    HTML Code:
    americanhumane.org
    about this topic.
    Then there's
    HTML Code:
    wspa-usa.org
    also.

Whenever I hear a story of animal abuse, it makes me so so angry. I want to track down those responsible and do... terrible things to them.

Even worse is that the law is never harsh enough on scum like that.

^ Me too. This is the reason I'm tired of sitting back and doing nothing but being angry about it and wishing things were better. I'm going to make them better.

I think I'm going to do a tad more research about paperwork on dogs and then going to local pet stores and pretending to be interested in purchasing a puppy so I can see paperwork on the dog and hopefully can easily spot puppies that are from a puppy mill.

So I went to just abotu every damn pet store in Vegas when I was looking for my dog. I also went to every shelter.

One pet store I went to in particular was disgusting. They had very cheap prices so I went there to find out why. They had 2 or 3 puppies crammed in tiny cages, The cages were wire, so the poop dropped down to a slot under the cage. Only the poop was never cleaned up. the cages were filthy. The store was small and stunk terribly. It was horrible.
I asked him if they had any other dogs, and he said they keep the older, bigger dogs in the back in larger cages. I fear what the cages away from the public eye come from.

I asked him where he was getting his dogs. They gave this this big long rehearsed story. I could tell it was rehearsed to appease people, because I bet he got questioned a lot.

They were really pushing me to get a dog from them. trying to make me hold them, bargain about price, just really pushy.

I felt so uncomfortable in that store, somethign wasn't right, and I turned and left after about 5 minutes. It was just terrible...

I wish I knew who to call or what to do to get them shut down.

I also wish that pet stores would screen their buyers so that the puppies are sure to go to a good home.

I wish that puppy mills got shut down. It is a terrible thing.

I eventually got my puppy off craigslist, I was to afraid to adopt from the shelter out here, I adopted a cat from the shelter and it died 3 days later from panleukopenia which is like feline parvo. The shelter was shut down soon after and they had to put to sleep over a thousand animals that had parvo or other contagious diseases. The shelters here are just as bad as puppy mills. It's so sad....

^ Is that pet store still open? Do you still live in the Vegas area?

There are laws regarding kennels in NV, and I'm assuming you could contact the humane society with the name of the pet store and any other information you could find. Also, see if you can find out who shut down the shelter, and contact them to check out the pet store. I'm still pretty new to this, so I'm learning as I go.

Not the Nevada spca, their facility is actually nice. The cats get to roam around. http://www.nevadaspca.org/cat_condos.htm

The dogs have to sit in cages, but they're pretty big, with indoor and outdoor space.

I'm on board -- animal abuse outrages me like nothing else.

One thing you can do is contact your local newspaper or other media outets and try to get them to do an investigation or expose on a pet shop that's buying from a puppy mill (if you know for sure they are). You can also lobby your local lawmakers to ban puppy mills in your town, and call the press to say that you're undertaking this effort (going to be at XYZ council meeting, etc.). The grassroots stuff really works.

Just to forewarn you...if its a pet store, esp in the mall, I can pretty much guarantee they are getting their puppies from mills. I worked in one in college before I started teching and some of the puppies we got were SO sick. They would literally throw them at you from the back of the truck and we had to bathe them and care for them since they were always delivered sick and filthy.

Very few pet stores operate differently.

They have a kill side and a no kill side. I adopted my kitten from the kill side, which is not in good shape. They are in cages. It's not sanitary. My kitten went in as a healthy stray, got a disease there and died 3 days after I got her.
Did you hear about the shit at Lied where they put down thousands of animals lst year cause of the diseases from not properly quarintining and sanatizing.

That absolutely makes me sick. I'm going to be checking out the pet store this week and going from there.. They do just keep the puppies in little wire cages and once when I was in there, a young guy working there was slamming the cage doors. If he was responsible for caring for the dogs, I'm sure they weren't receiving the best treatment.

all pet stores are supported by puppy mills because responsible breeders want to know who their dogs are going to, and also typically have the buyer sign a contract agreeing to returning the dog to the breeder if for any reason the buyer decides to get rid of the dog.

also-- pet stores likely won't give you the paperwork.
Want to make a difference? Then I suggest joining any animal groups who already have a system set up.

Or, start posting on craigslist for different areas in texas, repeating the info about how bad puppy mills and buying from pet stores are (and also warning against those people who use CL to sell their dogs for $500.)

Create a myspace page with all the great articles and movie sources you have, and join the myspace groups that actively try to fight this type of thing.

Volunteer at the pound and the humane shelters so you can get into contact with like minded people, and if you can, foster dogs-- especially those who need socialization, or medical help.

Create flyers and business cards with your myspace address, some quick bit of info-- fashion yourself into a person who can help a potential pet adopter find the pet for them. hell, your title can be "A Pet Broker for a Better World" or something like that.

on the occasional saturday, sit outside the pet store (find out the feet rule for your city that you can sit outside a business and protest. Also find out if you need to have any license to protest) and have your stack of flyers and some great big signs with pictures of puppy mill dogs who are bred with sick deformities and a label telling people what they're supporting by supporting pet stores that sell dogs/cats.

Very good advice fancygirl, thank you. I've actually been emailing a few people from CL that are interested in helping as well. I'm just so sick of sitting back and not doing anything!

I hear you, but you just have to consign yourself to starting yourself out small and with a plan-- otherwise you'll go in a million different directions and give up.

if you go to petfinder.com you should be able to find rescue organizations in your area that can tell you what they're actively doing to stop puppy mills. then you can either help them, or just figure out what you can do based on their system.

Yeah I agree about volunteering at an animal shelter, or becoming a foster. Don't be put off because the SPCA's "kill" some animals. They have to. They don't have the money/resources to care for all the animals, they are a non profit organization. Animals will be killed if they are not adoptabe or if they are "on the shelf" too log. They have to make room for new animals. If less people bought from pet stores and breeders, and instead got a pet from a shelter, then many animals would be spared. My mall still has a pet store, it is quite sad.
