So yesterday I was browsing around on this site:
I watched a documentary a few months ago where an animal rights activist went undercover and worked at a puppy mill. It absolutely broke my heart. The dogs are crammed in tiny cages, overbred, don't have fresh water or enough food and are treated like shit. Just do a google image search for puppy mill if you want to see the sad results. I'll spare you, and not post pictures here.
On that website, there is a link for state laws regarding puppy mills and dog sales:
I'm in Texas and there are NO laws regarding inspections or licensing for breeders and kennels. Texas is one of the states that gets the most complaints about breeders. This really, really infuriates me. Instead of sitting here wishing the dogs in puppy mills had better living conditions, I'm going to do something about it.
My question is, how do I go about this? I know I can lobby for better laws etc, and I plan on doing that. But, that's not enough for me, it takes a long time for laws to be put into effect if they even make it that far. The longer it takes, the more dogs are mistreated and the more die. What else can I do? There is a pet store in a local mall, and I was wondering if I could go in there and pretend to be interested in purchasing a puppy and asking to see paperwork on where the dog came from.. if it looks fishy or I suspect the puppies come from a puppy mill I could take it a step farther and maybe contact the humane society for help?
Does that sound like a good idea? Does anybody else have any other ideas for finding bad breeders and puppy mills around my area? Even if you don't, I encourage you to please at least look over that website, and if you want to adopt a dog, check your local shelter(s) first or at least thoroughly research a breeder before buying a dog and inspect the dog's living conditions. This needs to be stopped.
