Default anyone over 40 and still dancing?

I'm 42,I quit a year and a half ago but if any of you have read my posts you know I'm having a hell of a time getting a decent job and finacially I'm broke.Mostly I feel so unattractive.I hardly wear makeup at all anymore and I had to quit getting nails and tanning.I just really feel awful now.I thought I would be happy but I'm so lost.I danced for 13 years. When I quit I was making okay money, like most of the others there we had good days and bad but I could give them all a run for the money when I was there.I'm getting back into shape and hope to be able to go back in the fall.I don't know where but unless I land a really good job I want to dance a couple more years while I take online classes for some type of degree.Just wondering if any of you are in the same dilema. 40 + ?

Well, I am not over the age of 40, but I feel you. I just turned 28, but I started dancing at the age of 18. I don't have any job experience other than being an exotic dancer from then until now. I did however, invest about 12k into two businesses that me and my husband own. I invested into it and my husband does the work. The only thing is that, in this economy it is really hard to start small businesses. The cost of gas is killing us and I can't find a job that pays enough for me to be there. Right now, I stay at home with my five year old son getting him ready for school in the fall and I am the owner, manager and creative designer for our businesses. The only thing is that we make about 50 %less now, than I did dancing and we are barely making the bill money. I want to work, but $12/hr isn't going to help a whole lot. I too, feel like I'm stuck between a rock and hard place. I was smart and invested my money, but I also got burnt out in dancing from working my ass off to support three, sometimes more people on my own and invest in businesses. Now, I need money, but I really don't want to dance anymore. I live in Vegas, and I do not wish to dance here at all. If I was appreciated as an entertainer by the patrons, I wouldn't hesitate to go back, but it is more about what you can give them and for how much now. I do not want to be in that situation any longer. With the amount of prostitution going on in the clubs and all over this city, it makes it hard for straight entertainers to do well consistently these days. For me, I just have to have patience and let my businesses grow, to where, I don't have to worry about money anymore. But it's going to be at least two more years for that. So, believe me, it's not just you or your age. It's just how long we allow ourselves to be in the industry, and what we expect to happen when we no longer are in it. The real work world and a dancers world are two totally different scenarios. You can't compare the two. I am way younger than you, and still in the same boat, so I don't really think it has anything to do with your age. You just have to be smart and plan ahead. I think your plan to go back to dancing for a couple more years while you take some online classes and get a degree is a great idea and should be something you make a priority in your life. You have to have goals set for yourself outside of dancing, so that when you do quit, you'll have something to fall back on. Now, I do have something to fall back on, but I will still be broke for a couple more years waiting. It's definitely hard to try and go to working a real job after being independant for so long. Plus when you see how much your making, then you really don't want to do it. Stripper money, is really good money. We just need to learn, that it doesn't last forever and to be smart with it.
Oh, and yes, I had to cut back on EVERYTHING!!!! No more shopping, like at all, I hardly ever wear makeup(except like mineral face make up because I have acne scars), I never go out, I don't get my nails done (I do them myself, its actually pretty easy)I don't pay to go tanning, but I do lay out outside to get somewhat of a tan or I buy some self tanner, I never get my hair done anymore, but all those thing don't bother me that much. The only reason dancers even do all those things is because they think they need those things to make more money. Hell, if it makes you feel better about you, then, yeah you'll make more money. But honestly, it really doesn't make much of a difference. It just adds to your monthly expenses. As far as you not feeling attractive anymore, its only how you perceive yourself. It's not necessarily how others see you. You do not need alot of makeup, nails done, hair done and expensive clothes to be or feel beautiful. And I honestly think that dancing made you feel beautiful and accepted. Now that you aren't doing it anymore, you don't feel attractive anymore. It shouldn't be that way. I feel more beautiful now, than I did dancing. Mostly because I don't have to compare myself to hundreds of other beautiful women and listen to guys criticism about why I don't have fake boobs like all the other girls or platinum blonde hair. I feel way happier being me. And I won't ever change myself or how I look just to make more money. They only reason I would change anything about how I look is because I want to do it for me and for me only. OK, sorry for such the long post, but IMO I think you need to find who YOU are inside and focus on that. We are all beautiful, you just need to believe that, regardless of whether you're an entertainer or a administrative assistant or what not. Focus on what's important and not on the things you used to do or have. Hope this helps.

    That was a great answer.^^^^^
    I'm 38 so I'm close. And I know two others over 40.
They both still have what it takes. Basically if the club is willing to take you and the customers are willing to tip you it's all good. And it has nothing to do with age. I have seen some fugly girls making $$ for whatever reason.
So I say if you want to do it go ahead. And no you don't have to tan and get your nails done. Do it if it makes you feel better- but honestly the guys don't care.
And yes it is alot like greeneyedgrl said. How much you're willing to do for what amount of $ in alot of clubs. Very disturbing.

I just turned 37. I have been dancing off and on since 22. But I also, invested money and got three degrees. But guess what? In this economy, it doesn't really matter

I am also in one of the cities that dancers just hate: LA, Ca.

I just work in one club now. It's very up and down. It's bikini, so extras here are kinda difficult, since we are out in the open. But I had a great month until my last two shifts, in which I made about $15 hr after my tip out:-(

On the brighter side, I work with a lot of dancers who are in their thirties and beyond. Some do amazingly well. It all depends on you.

I am a very small person and have never had my boobs done. I rarely get stupid comments about why I don't have fakies and some custies really like them

But just get your confidence up and do it. I see older, much heavier dancers at my club bank way more than I do ( like I said I'm tiny, I can fit into a designer size 0 dress). Most of our customer base is Latino. They like thick girls. I don't know about your neck of the woods, but I remember on a trip to So. Carolina, I stayed in Charlston and there was a fair amount of Latin population there.

Good luck to you. Just go into a club and own yourself.
