    Default blackmail! argh!

A roommate went psycho on me in Feb, and I had to move out within hours of him freaking out on me. We didnt have a written lease, so I didnt have any legal obligations. But now all of sudden he's contacted me to try to get me to pay $400 in utilities, and he's threatening to blackmail me by telling my parents I strip if I dont pay. He also once said some crazy shit about me being a prostitute, which of course I am not.

My parents know I work in a strip club, though I told them I bartend.

I called them and told them that he's crazy and prone to lying (both true)
and warned them he may try to contact them.

I'm going to the cops tomorrow to file a police report about the incident in Feb., and perhaps to get a restraining order.

    Drama sucks.

Sounds like you've got your bases covered. Really, even IF he does contact them, who are they going to believe: their daughter, or some strange guy who they've no doubt already heard stories about regarding his psycho behavior and mental instability?

I'd call his bluff. Laugh at him and tell him "good luck with that, my parents already know."

What a psycho. You could give it back to him and slash his tires or something but you're probably too nice to do anything like that. Yeah, restraining order. Sorry you're going through this.

Just curious...what do you think your parents would say/do if they found out you were dancing? It sounds like they're fairly open-minded if they already know you're working in an SC and they're fine with it...

Even what you imagine to be the worst-case scenario (i.e. he actually tells them you dance and they believe him)...might not be that bad. If they already know and accept that you work in a club...for all you know, maybe they already suspect that you're dancing anyway?

If I had a daughter who said she was working as a "bartender" in a strip club I'd totally assume she was dancing but not say anything about it. I think you should call his bluff and if your parents say anything deny, deny, deny. They sound reasonable about it already.

Also, I don't think he needed a written lease to consider you a roommate but its a bit late for that. I'd tell him to go screw himself on the $400. What is he going to do, take you to small claims? If you were a roommate he couldn't have thrown you out and if you weren't then you don't owe him utilities. I say hes screwed either way.

They do know I work in a strip club, though they think it's a gay strip club. Long story there...anyway yeah, they also did know that I used to bartend at a straight one and they were OK with that. I really was bartending back then. They probably wouldn't disown me or anything like that, but it wouldn't make them feel good to know I'm actually stripping. They're intelligent people and they're probably suspicious already. It wouldn't be catastrophic if they found out, though I think they might cry. I mostly am keeping the stripping a secret from them out of kindness...I just dont wanna upset them.

I ran this by a friend in law school and she said that without a lease, I'm home free. I did pay rent by check for 3 or 4 months there, and it says "rent" on the memo line. However we had no agreement at all about the utilities, and they are sometimes included in rent, so I don't see how they'd win in small claims

You're totally right, if you have no written lease you are scot free. Especially since it sounds like your friend got this apartment first and you moved in with him, or you moved in at the same time. He is in turn responsible for the rent.

I believe this varies from state to state, but without a lease you *may* be required to give 30 days notice prior to vaccating, but since he stayed in the apartment without you, the responsibility falls on him....

I wouldn't worry about it, just be glad that psycho is out of your life ! Tell him to go ahead and call your parents, fuck it, it takes the power away from him...

I think you're being really smart about it and since there is no written lease, you're in the clear. As for your parents, I wouldn't worry about it.. they won't believe some crazy ass guy over you. Keep us updated!
