    Default Neck muscle tightness

Since I've started getting more stretchy and in better shape (on and off since October-mostly yoga and pilates), I've noticed a couple bits of my body are way tight and painful-mostly this one muscle or muscle that goes from the back-side of the neck down to the wing area. I don't know muscles, but on this pic it looks like it's the levitor scapulae or the one right to the left of it. It's in that area at least:

When I do any sort of foward stretch, that muscle hurts more than my hamstrings (which are tight as well)! Of course, I don't push it, but how can I stretch this area? I do neck rolls, etc, but nothing helps. The pain is mainly on the left side.

    Thanks!

    It's your trapezium (traps).

Place your left hand on the right side of your head and pull your head down to your left shoulder. To get extra stretch out of this at the same time put your right arm out to the side and spread your fingers apart and push your hand down towards the floor (just as a motion not actually trying to reach down).

Repeat on the other siden - right hand on left side of head and pull head down to your right shoulder.

    I love this stretch.

Apart from that a heat pack will prob relieve some of the pain and of course a good massage - which u can even do yourself.

Tape 2 tennis balls together. keep wrapping the tape around and around until the balls are completely covered in tape (NOT scotch tape).

Lie face up on top of them. Your spine will end up going in the space between the balls. You can start from the base of your skull, work your way down to in between the shooulder blades and all the way down to your low back. Move slowly with your hips in the air (you'll get a butt workout at the same time) and allow the muscles in your back to melt around the tennis balls. You'll probably want to hold your head with you hands when you're releasing inbetween the shoulder blades.

Wow that is such a great tip! I've always just BEGGED people to rub my neck/shoulders (and they weren't at all enthused) because there's no way in hell I'm paying 50 for some newb massage therapist to get ease my tension. I'm totally trying this! Thanks for posting that

Its not the cheapest option but it really worked for me. I had, still have infact, the worst neck ever. I used to see a massuse(sp!) once a week and see a chiropractor once a month and neither of them could fix my neck, they helped my back but my neck was still solid. On one side it felt like there was an egg under my skin the tension was so tight. Then I went for accupuncture and the first few times I went it felt like nothing was happening and then the third time it was amazing! All the tension in my neck dissapeared, I felt like my neck was made of jelly. I actually felt really sick when I stood up and the accupuncturist said it was because all of the tension was being released. Anyway, I completely swear by it

Thank you guys! I've had some massages, but no one ever knows what to do with that part of my neck! Polekitten-I get the 'egg' feeling in my neck too! I'm going to do all of these-maybe even the acupuncture! It's so frustrating to have part of my body get all nice and stretchy and one little part saying NOOOO.

Ouch-Jaiz that stretch is killer. Feels good though.

    Your welcome!

After I go through my whole spine with the tennis balls I usually go into "the plow." I try to create a deeper space between each vertebrae while keeping navel-to-spine. It feels soooooo relaxing afterwards.
