    Default Question about pole dancing

Do you think it's easier to perform intermediate to advanced pole tricks if you weigh less? Or have good upper body strength? Because I've seen women with skinny ass arms and no muscle do pretty good pole tricks. What does it come down to?

Surprisingly the best most show stopping pole dancer I ever saw was the one of the biggest girls I ever have had the pleasure to dance with.

She was the most proficient and just amazing with the pole. She could turn any song into this aggressive choreographed 5 minute show with all that she did. And I mean she'd climb to the top, drop to the bottom at such a speed and stop RIGHTinTIME to sexily drape her body to the floor, only to redo it again and do other shit like do upside down splits on it, and flag pole on it.

I'm guessing she had a lot of muscle to be able to do all that.

    everyone called her spiderman. crazzyy.

I think good arms is a part of it, but having a strong core is really the ticket I've found.

    arm strength is important...

but, the heavier you weight, the harder your body has to work to hold up that weight, so you get stronger faster. at least that's been my observation.

i have also noticed that girls with bigger thighs have it a bit easier on leg holds.. i.e. more surface area to stick to the pole.

but the most important muscle is your brain, if you are scared or complacent, you're not gonna want to get into many tricks. if you are dead set on getting something, regardless of how big you are, you'll get quickly.

one of my students is a larger girl and she is ADDICTED to pole! lol she's a mom of a few teenagers too. she is advancing faster than i ever did, she is the most dedicated person i've ever seen (so much so, i'm training her to become an instructor). just this week she came in with booty shorts and a sports bra and i was like "OMG, LOOK AT YOUR STOMACH!" it used to be like most overweight moms stomachs, round and out there, now you can see lines! i'm so proud of her!

sorry for the off topic thing, but essentially i was saying, no it's not necessarily easier if you weight less. it's all in your determination.

So even though I only weigh 110lbs and don't have incredible arm strength, once I get a pole and start working on it I'll build up muscle strength pretty quick, right?

If you try something 100 times...youll get it right eventually. Im 110 lbs and tricks were difficult at first. Now that ive built up arm and core strength, proper hand/leg placement is the biggest problem for me. That and sweaty hands.

Pole tricks does not and has never come naturally to me. I lost a good amount of weight last year and suddenly, I could do a few tricks that I could never quite get the hang of. Even when I gained that weight back, I could still do the tricks since I never stopped doing them and I guess I built up the strength.

I think sweaty hands are gonna be a problem for me too. I may be making my husband build me a pole this weekend. If that's the case I'm sure I'll have plenty of pictures of me busting my ass for your amusement.

Thanks for all your replies.. I think I'm gonna get a pole from platinum stages, they're having a sale, $160 for a stationary pole.

I made one from home depot but it's way too thick to grip and I don't feel like taking it in to get plated.

Yup I think it's harder if you're heavier on your lower body. I've been pole dancing for 20 months now but am 32 and naturally quite pear shaped. I can get the moves in the end but I have to practice harder than a lot of other girls.

I was sick as a fucking dog for about a month with that bubonic plague flu that was going around, and wound up losing ten pounds, which pissed me off. The only upside to this was that pole tricks became noticeably easier.

So yeah weight can affect your ability to do advanced pole tricks. But I have seen some bigger women do amazing things, as well.

There's a product called Dry Grip that'll take care of sweaty palms. Also Firm Grip or a rosin bag. Some use hairspray to increase their grip.

I doubt weight has that much to do with learning pole tricks. It's all about how strong you are. The first two women I've ever seen work the pole (one of them placed 2nd or 3rd in P'Olympics) weren't thin at all but they were very strong. For me, it was just having a background in gymnastics that made pole work second nature.

Since losing weight i have found pole tricks have become easier. However the cross knee release which i was overjoyed at being able to do has suffered dramatically fromt he last 7lb loss as it seems to all have come off my inner thighs (which isn't a bad thing) but makes it all the more difficult to grip the pole with them.

Although i firmly believe that anyone can pole dance given enough determination. I started off with nothing but flab and now have big hardcore calf and arm muscles. Still working on those abs

Bottom line, the more you weigh- the more you have to lift. However, if you weigh a lot, but have a lot of muscle mass then some things are easier. The ladies performing below are pretty hefty, but the are strong as hell!

Me too. I'm pretty petite but I've always had pretty decent upper body strength. I love doing pilates and I think that really helps me have more core balance when I practise on the pole. I also rely on my thicker thighs for gripping and holding myself up.

I am a larger girl, and can do quite a few pole tricks. Up until my BA I could climb and flip with ease. I'm sure that's a different story now, as I haven't been into the pole stuff much since the surgery. But I still, did a lot, and people were surprised. I am really strong, strong enough to lift this body. We also climb 20' ropes at muay thai (well...did).
