Default can i lighten my hair by myself?

my hair is dark brown. i dye it myself to make it a little darker than it naturally is, but i also dyed it to cover my blonde highlights from last fall.

im thinking about going a lighter brown but im afraid i wont like it.. i know i can just go dark again pretty easily, but im worried about going lighter. i know theres dye specifically for going lighter from dark hair. does anybody know how easy it is to lighten my hair and NOT make it look orange like i did once? i dont want any reddish tones at all.

Honestly, I would go to a salon, especially if you're going to go lighter. Or hell a beauty college.

Once the hair is colored, the only thing that will lighten it is bleach.

With that being said, I prefer to lighten my clients with previously colored hair by highlighting. Since you want to be a lighter brown and not blonde, I'd lift your highlights to an orange then tone with a blue demi to acheive a light, neutral or caramel-ly brown.

im def not going to a beauty college! i dont want my hair messed up and you never know with that...

i think i'll just go to my hair lady for caramel colored highlights, like you said mia. i talked to my best friend and decided it isnt the best idea to lighten my whole head. i always just end up going dark again anyway.

    thanks!

Several yrs ago i had dyed black hair and wanted to be blonde. Every salon i called said it would cost a lot and that they wouldnt touch it until i grew the colour out.
In a moment of madness i bought a pre lightener and blonde dye from the shop. The pre lightener made my hair a lovely orange shade and the texture of my mop. The blonde dye went on and as you can imagine noting really happened, except my hair was even more screwed. So i put a hat on and went to the shop again and bought a red dye.
My hair turned a really cool scarlet which lasted about week until it faded into an orange colour. By this time my hair was all matted and coarse with a lot of breakage. Sooooooooo what do i do, i colour it a light brown. Well luckily the colour worked but my hair was beyond repair. I had about 6 inches cut off and just kept putting loads of conditioner on and getting regular trims.
So on a short note, its just not worth the hassle. I wouldve just gotten highlights as i did recently to turn my dark brown hair blonde. I have had 2 sets and it is practically a lovely golden colour, one more set and i will get my prefered shade

I HIGHLY recommend going to a salon for this but if you must do it yourself I'll give the best instructions I can.

You are going to have to use all over bleach since you colored your hair to break through the artificial pigment. You can get it at Sally's, make sure you following the instructions on mixing to a tee. You'll also need to make sure you can use it on base meaning it will be touching your scalp. I wouldn't recommend using anything higher than 30 volume developer. If you don't apply it evenly you are also going to end up with darker spots in your hair.

Get a bowl and color brush to apply it with maybe even have a friend apply it all over in small sections for you. You want to apply to the mid-shaft first, new growth second and ends lastly because they will be more porous. Start at the back of the head and work your way to the front. The hair in the front will process faster.

Once you apply it your hair will first turn red, then orange, then yellow. If you want to be golden blonde lift to a light yellow. This will probably take 30 minutes or so, be patient and only rinse it if you are having severe irritation. If you feel as though you are too yellow tone with a demi-permanent level 9ash. Apply it with a bottle and make sure you get in on evenly. Once again it will have to mixed with it's proper catalyst. You'll see your hair changing color once you get the demi on. Rinse the demi out when it gets to your desired shade, remember hair is darker when it is wet. Lightly shampoo with a color safe shampoo and use a deep conditioner. Don't wash for 24 hours.

If you do like the color you lift to just use a 9Neutral to tone with. In my opinion you should tone using demi-permanant to bring the ph back down and help close up the cuticle.

    Hope it turns out well.

Yeah, if you want to be a lighter brown lift to orange then tone with a demi intense ash level 7.

When I was in high school I went from black to champagne blond by myself. Yha it looked like shit for a couple of weeks but then it was fine.

If I had to do it again I would probably go get professional highlights because now my hair matters.

I'm actually gradually lightening mine. It was blue black and looked awful on me, now I just dye the roots "brown black" and the color blends fine but isn't the same shitty tone and isn't BLACK, so I'm kindda lightening it a couple shades as it grows out...if that makes any sense.

Oh, neat, Joplin! I'll have to try that if I need to go lighter. I loooove dark shades, but I don't like how permanent they are.
