Default I did a bad thing

Today the postman came with a parcel. My flatmate told me to expect something to be delivered for him so my bf just signed for it and left it in the hall. When I looked at it tho it didn't have my flatmates name on it and had a totally different address so I opened it to see if it was what he was expecting.
When I opened it tho it was a completely gorgeous mirror. Honestly, its beautiful, so so much my style my bf is sure that I bought it and just don't want to tell him.

I did something bad, I unwrapped it and put it on my mantel piece. I know its not mine but I feel like its meant for me, maybe someone sent it to me? A secret admirer?

I feel a bit bad tho, what if the postman comes back and its on my mantle piece, what do I say? Will the postman loose his job? What about my flatmates parcel, do you think he might not get it now? Was this one delivered by accident?

Hmm, tell me what to do, should I take it back off the mantel piece and call the post office or should I keep it on the mantel piece and deny all knowledge?
Bare in mind that its very beautiful.

    Um...yeah.

It had a completely different address on it. It was meant for someone else. You opened some stranger's mail. You kept someone's else's purchase/gift? Seriously, wtf?

It's not yours. It wasn't "meant for you". Someone else ordered and paid a good deal for it probably, is probably waiting for it. It's incredibly messed up to keep it.

I'm sorry if I'm being harsh, but stealing makes me angry.

Do the right thing and call the post office and say a package was delivered to the wrong address.

You can explain you opened it because you thought it was yours. It happens, they'll understand.

It's probably best to take it directly to a post office with the old box (with the correct address), because they can make sure it's wrapped properly and doesn't get broken on it's second shipment.

But really, you can't keep it. That's just mean. And fairly dumb, as when the actual owner tries to trace where the package went, the postoffice has a record of your boyfriend signing for it.

i'm awful but i would keep it. Sorry, i am just being honest. I usually am a very honest person, but my logic in this sitiuation is that the person it was meant for will file a claim and be ok anyways. I guess i am just pissed b/c i moved into a new house in feb and apparently who ever lived here before made like 10 false claims with UPS and now I have to file papers etc. to prove it wasn't me.

You can try to do the right thing all the time and still get screwed, i would keep it. (although I probably would have never opened it, but you opened before you knew it wasnt his?)

The post man just came and got it. I didn't call or anything, he just came by and said he delivered it by accident and gave me my flatmates parcel in exchange. I said I opened it by accident and he was fine about it. He seemed pretty relieved tbh. I feel a bit sad now coz it was so pretty, I'm gonna have to get one for myself now! Thanks for all the advice peeps.

Lol, I don't think so, hope not. You can't see into the livingroom through the front door. He could have if he was looking through the front window but I don't think he did.

Right now Im pissed off because for the 2nd time we have mailed gifts to my ex husband and his wife for their baby daughter and yet again the gifts have just not arrived so obviously been lost of stolen somewhere along the line. Give me faith in human nature and the postal service and do the right thing pleeeeease (-:

I'm glad it all worked out. Do you have a way to find out where the mirror came from so you can buy one for yourself?

Yeah, keeping it would not have been the right thing to do. Something like this almost happened to me. My Mom bought my bf and me a really nice and expensive comforter as a housewarming gift and it accidentally got delivered to her next door neighbor. Thank god she's honest-she very well could have kept it but didn't.

Yeah you guys are right, I'm glad the postman came although I rearranged all my mantle for the mirror and now it looks so sad and lonely without it. I honestly didn't mean to open it with the intention of keeping it, I didn't realise it was illegal to open other peoples mail although when you think about it it makes sense.
It was so gorgeous you guys, the gorgeousness of it just got me carried away, I don't usually try and steal other peoples stuff. I guess whenever I looked at it I would have known it wasn't mine. Didn't see who the company was that made it so I'll just have to track down something else.
Glad am not going to prison tho, I don't wanna be someones bitch!

    Hilarious
I'm glad the decision was made for you and he came back and picked it up.
Did you take a picture of the mirror?
Maybe someone here can help you track it down online.
Karma will be kind to you for giving it back

You do realize it's a Federal felony offense?
The USPS website has penalties listed as 5 years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines.

Do you know who it was being delivered to? Perhaps you could swing by and explain the situation and ask where they got it or who makes it.

I'm glad you did the right thing and returned it. Hopefully you looked at the receipt so you could see where to buy your own! Stealing would NOT have been okay.

I did read the rest of the thread, thanks for assuming I didn't.
Someone mentioned fraud, I figured i'd add further info.

For the record i've had packages stolen and the whole subject really pisses me off. Someone decided to gank something I had ordered fo my daughter for her birthday. I can not tell you how disappointed she was not to receive it and the huge amount of trouble I had to go through to have it replaced even though it was insured.
