Default disputing a charge on credit card?

ugh. I've never had to do this before, so I'm not really sure what I need to do, but I can't just keep letting them rape me like this.

I signed up for a membership at Bally Total Fitness (BIG mistake, they are super-shady). They had this program where you could try it out for two months and if, at the end of 60 days you had done at least 16 visits to the gym and were dissatisfied, you could cancel your membership within 10 days.

So I did. I did everything by the book: did the required initial personal training session (which was useless btw), went over 20 times, and cancelled within the 10-day time slot after the 60-day period was up.

But now they're still billing my credit card. I cancelled in person at the office AND sent a letter of cancellation for good measure, b/c I've heard too many horror stories about shady dishonest gyms trying to prevent you from cancelling.

So what do I do now? This is bullshit. How do I go about disputing that charge on my card? Or is there anything else I can do?

Call your credit card company. Give them proof of the cancellation and the inital agreement that your card would not be charged if you followed protocol, and prove that you followed it to a -t-. Other than that, complain to the highest person at the gym that you can, call or write to corporate. Don't let them jerk you around.

like landlords and security deposits, they're liable to dispute the fact that you fulfilled every little detail of the 'refund' provisions. Ultimately, they won't be able to charge you in the future, but it's rather doubtful that you'll ever see a refund unless you choose to take further action (like small claims court).

^^ I don't care that much about a refund, I just want them to fucking stop billing me.

I've disputed a claim before when I was billed 2x and the company was not responding to my contacts. My credit card company (MBNA Mastercard) was very helpful. First try everything you can to get it back from Bally and document your attempts, and then call your CC company.

And if that doesn't work, just report the card as stolen and get a new card.

I had to do that with XSport. No matter what I did, they kept charging...I disputed it with the CC company and they reversed all the charges, but XSport kept charging away. So I reported the card stolen and no problems later.

Cancel the card/change the number--so they don't have acess to it. File a complaint with the better bissness ... and file a claim with yr credit card company for a refund.

Keep all paperwork and dispute it with equifax if they ever try to take you to collections--which they won't as at that point they will be losing money trying to pull this on you.
