    Default Light bulbs

My new apartment has a ceiling fan. There's a 25-watt bulb in there, one 60-watt bulb, one that's too scratched to read, and one of the spiral power-saving kind (120V-60Hz 23W...?). Can anyone shed some light (oops, no pun intended) on what is going on here and what kind of bulbs I should put in when the old ones go? I thought putting a bulb with the wrong wattage resulted in a fire.

Sounds like one is a flourescent bulb. They are more energy efficient and last longer (the ones we use here haven't been changed in over 1 1/2 years).

Just replace with a lower wattage flourescent bulb. I would use lower wattage if you have multiple bulbs anyways...they can create a lot of heat (not necessarily flourescents, though).

Yep, those fluorescent bulbs are awesome. Totally worth the money.

Is there any sort of sticker or marking on the unit itself that says what bulb to place? If not, I'd probably stick to a 60 watt or below. Also, I'd definately go for fluorescents---they're worth the upfront expense!

^So is the general rule that a bulb of too high a wattage can start a fire and a bulb of too low a wattage just isn't as bright as it COULD be, but it's safe?

If you've got three bulbs and each is a 60, you have 180 watts of illumination, which ought to be plenty.

The wrong wattage per se won't start a fire, but one that draws too much heat for the wiring may. As long as you stick to a low wattage, or the fluorescent bulbs, you should be fine.

Check on the inside of the socket, there may be a sticker or something that says what wattage is allowed.

threadjack sorta, my poor SO has a bulb in his ceiling fan/light fixture that's too freakin small and yet too big at the same time. He can't find a replacement anywhere and resulted in taking the bulb with him to like 4 stores. Just learn from him, Bella, and take the bulbs with you when you go.
Oh and it's still dark in his room... 4 days of darkness which has me saying things like, "God said let my people go or else I give you darkness!" ha. i make bad jokes very naice yes. Good luck Bella!

    Love it!

Ha, the 60 watt one just burnt out! Good thing I made this post. It wasn't an issue about getting the energy efficent ones so much as getting what I needed without causing major problems.

Chrissy, is there a landlord that he can call? He might have to resort to the internet? That sucks!

Check either the ceramic base (the thing the bulb scres into) or the actual light "cup"; it should have the proper wattage listed.

For a ceiling fan, a 60-watt light bulb will do just fine with no worries whatsoever.

FWIW, my ceiling fan specified no more than 60 watts per socket.
