    Default Shaking during sleep?

My husband will occasionally have seizure like movements in his sleep. He doesn't have any health issues or anything. He's not on any medications and doesn't do drugs. He'll be asleep and he'll start shaking, last night he did it and it was the worst one yet. It woke me up and I watched him for a second before I woke him up and he literally looked like he was having a seizure. He does it, I'd say once every few weeks. It just started happening a few months ago and I think he's done it 4-5 times since it started.

I always gently put my hand on his arm and say his name to wake him up. He says he doesn't have bad dreams and he doesn't realize when he's doing it, even after I wake him up and tell him about it he still doesn't realize he did it. I wake him up, ask him if he's okay and I tell him he was shaking and he's always really out of it, then he goes right back to sleep. I tried doing a google search but I didn't get a satisfying answer. Does anybody have any ideas as to what could be causing it? Do I need to worry?

The fact that you say he is out of it makes it sound like an actual seizure. Weird that they have only happened when he is asleep, but I do know that they do happen during sleep. I would definitely have him see a Dr asap. My ex had seizures (both awake and asleep) and they kept intensifiying until he had to be put on meds to avoid possible brain damage.

When I say out of it, I mean when I wake him up he is really sleepy. You know how when you get woken up you're out of it for a few minutes? He knows where he is and who I am and everything, he was just fast asleep and had no idea what was going on. I probably will make sure he goes to the doctor anyway, he snores a lot and I'm pretty sure he's got sleep apnea.

Oh weird! Is he under a lot of stress right now?

Not to be a spaz (haha) or anything, but if I'm really stressed out I'll just get the shivers out of nowhere, or like eye or finger twitches... could it be related to stress?

It sounds like a hypnic jerk and it's completely normal.

^^ Hypnotic jerks don't last for more than a few moments though. It sounds like this is more serious.

When you sleep your body produces a chemical that causes paralysis so you don't hurt yourself while dreamng. Sometimes people don't make enough and they do what you're describing. It's really no big deal. It's not seizure activity.

By all means see a doc for peace of mind though.

He said he isn't stressed out, but he thinks he may be depressed but I doubt that has anything to do with it. I'm on Zoloft for depression and anxiety and I've never had anything like that.

I'm a fairly light sleeper, so I think I wake up within 10 seconds or so of him shaking and I wake him up gently. I wonder if I should see how long it lasts the next time he does it and not wake him up?

^ Good links Summer, thanks! That kind of sounds like what he does. He also says he thinks he has restless leg syndrome and I read that correlates with it.

He did it again last night, but I forgot to not wake him up and I touched his arm before I remembered I was going to see how long he went. He never woke up, but he stopped shortly after I touched his arm. He's never done it 2 nights in a row.. He did stay up late playing Xbox last night and the night before so he may have been tired and that's what causes it? That would make sense..
