    Dr. Bernstein diet?

    Hey there,

I was wondering if anyone has done this diet before? I did a search but it came up with nothing. What did you think of it?

The reason I am, as I normally wouldn't as it's very expensive, is because my boyfriend is going to pay for me. He did a few years ago and lost like a 100 pounds! I don't have too much to lose, maybe 20 pounds or so (I really just want to get rid of a little belly weight, I'm not really overweight or anything). I'm kind of worried as well, because much of the diet goes against all the good things I know about eating (ie. women need a certain amount of good fats and carbs to mantain healthy brain and body function). So, any comments? People you know who did the diet, etc.

    Thanks so much!

Well, it's difficult to explain in entirely (if you're really interested, I'd say google it), but the main premise if that it's a medically watched diet. Meaning that a nurse and a doctor (doctor sees you every two weeks) watches your weight lose. You are on a very low calorie diet with no fats really, but they supplement the lose of food with b-vitamin shots in your butt three times a week and lots of extra vitamins. It's one of the only diet where one can actually lose up to 5 pounds per week. Oh, and they check your pee to see if you cheated off the diet, then get mad at you. So it is very monitered. Generally speaking, it seems like a diet for really obese people, but if he pays for it, I wouldn't mind losing a few pounds.

In the case of gaining it all back, my boyfriend did really well (albeit about 10 pounds here or there). Some people go right back to their old habits, so it doesn't always work, but generally the weight stays off in most cases in seems (with my research). Anyway, they seem to do pretty well and most people who have done it rave about it.

Also, you are forced to go to one of their clinics 3 times per week, to get your shots/vitamins and get weighed in, as to not "fall" from the diet.

I need to lose about 25# but I am wondering if the sublingual b-12 would do the trick along with exercise and low cal.

I found this on about.com, . It's not really instructions so much as where to find the info, and a little about what the diet entails.

I heard it cost's $320.oo a week. My friend was going to go,(for a few weeks) to get a head start on a diet but changed her mind due to that price.

Umm, as somebody who has been on a low calorie, low fat, unhealthy diet for years (except mine was free and called anorexia lol) I can garuntee you that this is going to fuck up your metabolism ROYALLY. It's not worth it for the quick fix. Seriously. Plus, unless you are like 300lbs, I hate to tell you, you can't loose 5lbs a week of fat. Water weight might make you look skinnier if you loose it but it comes right back.

Simple, equation: It takes 2800 calories of energy to loose a pound, okay...so your body has to expend 2800 more calories of energy than you eat to loose a pound...Well, unless you are an Olympic Athlete or Morbidly obese, your body does not need anywhere near 2800 calories a day to get the energy to get through workouts, etc...so even if you would literally NOT eat (which you couldn't do very long without dying!) you would not loose a pound of fat a day.

I REALLY advise against doing it. If you ARE going to do an extreme diet, the medifast 5+1 would be the only thing I can reccommend, solely because they are very strict about making sure you go "off the diet the right way " to readjust your metabolism. My mom lost a lot of weight on this diet, she was probably in the same boat as you, 5'3" 140lbs and went down to 115...probably lost 2.5 lbs a week which is REALLY fast for somebody of that weight. I have some of their soups and stuff in my house, I use them to supplement my diet....

(I used to work for a national weight loss clinic, which can't legally name because of a contract I signed, but it WAS not MediFast. I wish I would have worked for them because the company I worked for scammed ripped of and lied to people and sucked balls, so I quit.)

^2800 calories for a pound? I keep getting told it's 3500. Well, either way, I can't do extreme dieting, working out is all that works for me.

I thought it was 3500 too, but unless you're obese I don't see how this diet can be justified as a recommended way to lose weight.

^IMHO a lot of diets aren't justifiably 'good' ways to lose weight. But self control and discipline are hard to come by, so it's common to push the limits of healthy. This one's a little over the top, for me.

I didn't say "good" I said recommended because people who are morbidly obese are told to do it to get them low enough to have surgery and what not. It's obviously not "good" but is recommended so they don't die.

Thanks for all the feedback! So, I've started the diet now. For someone like me, who has some of the worst eating habits on the planet (tons of caffeine and chain smoking all day until about 7-10pm where I gorge on one very large meal + snacks late at night), this diet is forcing me to eat during the day. As for it being super low calorie, it really would be for a really obese person that originally ate massive amounts daily, but for me, I actually almost can't eat all that they recommend. Yesterday for example, I couldn't possibly eat as much as they told met to.

And it really is very strictly monitored, for example, today I have to go get blood tests for everything under the planet. As well, to get your shots, you see a nurse three times a week and are encouraged to ask them all your questions and concerns. Then, you see a doctor every two weeks to make sure everything is fine. And the B6 and B12 shots are awesome! I already have more energy and feel happier.

Yes, it is pretty expensive. But, even if someone wasn't paying for me, I would have saved that money by not eating out anymore and not drinking any alcohol. The alcohol thing is actually really really good for me, as I was having a big problem limiting myself in that department.

Regardless, I do agree with you all that it may not be the healthiest option, but for me, all I really care about is learning how to eat at better times and limiting my alcohol. Losing a few pounds in the process would be great!

Let me know if you have any more questions. And if you want, I can talk about my progress as I continue. Thanks!

so are you going to be getting these shots forever?

If not, wont you be deficient if you keep following the meal plan, and if you don't follow the meal plan wont you just gain back the weight?

If a doctor is willing to put someone on this diet who is not obese, I would question that doctor's judgement. That would show he's in it just for the money, and not patient welfare.

Did they restrict how much you are allowed to lose on this diet?
Because if not, and he is willing to let you lose whatever you wat....he's opening himself up to lawsuits and shit, if you would happen to collapse or get sick from such low calories and losing an unhealthy amount of weight.

I tried to make another post right after I made the last one, but it wouldn't let me. In that, I noted that they will not, under any circumstances, let you lose more weight than what is healthy for your body (according to standard weight to height charts).

No, you don't have to take the shots forever. Once you lose the weight, you are put on a maintenence diet where they slowly add new things into your diet with higher portions. This is also when you lower the shot amount. By the end of it, you can go back to a completely normal eating regimen. People generally don't gain alot of the weight back as they have begun a healthier lifestyle. As well, you can go back for a tune-up if you gain any back.

I've never done it personally, but it was a big thing where I work for a while.

One girl (who was heavy to begin with) lost 100 pounds in about six months. Without the maintenace program, she gained back 20 but said she felt great and probably could have kept the weight off had she tried to.
Another girl lost and regained 25 lbs because she pretty much went right back to her old habits.
A third girl went on and off it consistently, losing a few pounds then binging, etc.
The other girl, I'm not sure exactly how much she lost, but she went from being what I'd call overweight (not quite obese) to being pretty skinny, and kept it off well. I didn't work with her for long but she wasn't on the maintenance program, just kept eating pretty healthy.

To me, it seems like it WILL really work, particularly if you have a lot of weight to lose, it just takes a lot of willpower because it's pretty restrictive.
I'm not sure how healthy it is, although the foods they tell you to eat are all healthy, and they say with the shots it covers all your nutritional needs.
I'd do it if I could afford it!

I do something similar without the shots and blood work
My program is called the genetix program and i speak with a Dr twice a day who monitors my progress, helps me make a meal plan for the day, answers any questions and most importantly holds me accountable and encourages the hell out of me.
I lost 50 pounds on this program in 5 months almost a year before i got pregnant. Now i am back at square one and doing it again. It is a very strict, low calorie, low fat, high veggie high fruit diet and a reasonable workout plan. Its not easy, in fact its super hard and takes a lot of discipline. But i know it works, so i'm doing it again. I don't pay nearly that much either.

I just wanted to let everyone know about my progress, or lack there of, lol. About four days into the diet, I was so starving (like all day, all I thought about was food. Which is very unlike me) that I ate a giant bowl of pesto pasta. I started to think about what I was really doing, how the diet goes against so many of the healthy principles I stand by. For example, I never eat sythentic sugars (like splenda, equal, etc.) as I know that they are absolutely horrible for ones body. On the diet, many of the foods you can eat are packed with this stuff. I just can't put it into my body though!

Then I realized that I really do love my body. Sure, I could lose 10 pounds or so, but to go from 180 to 150 would completely alter my look. I'm sure I would look too skinny for my build. I've always done just as well as the other girls with how I look, men generally love my curves. I guess I had to do something stupid to realize how much I love myself.

That being said, this diet is a really great idea for those that are morbidly obese and suffering from health problems, for many this is their last hope before dangerous surgeries, etc. But for me, healthy eating and some exercise will do the trick and make me feel better.

Anyway, I really wanted to thank the people that really questioned this. At first, I felt defensive, then I started to really think about what you said. I don't want to mess up my metabolism, so thanks for making me think about it. If you have any more questions about the diet, let me know.

^^^Good for you. I'd like to add that you should try flavoring things with Stevia instead of sugar or alternatives. It's also natural and not synthetic, and tastes great. Just make sure to take LESS of it. I'm not sure how it does for baking either. You can find it online or at a Whole Foods market type of place!

I love stevia! I have both the liquid and the powdered form. The thing is, it didn't work with alot of the diet options. It worked for things like tea, but alot of the dietary substitutes are packed with the bad stuff.
