    Nail infection after manicure

I got gels put on two weeks ago, after not having acrylics for months. While they are filing the edges so they aren't pointy and sharp, the manicurist takes off a layer of skin on the side of my nail. It hurt, and now its infected. I've been keeping it clean, and I put neosporin on it, but it's still really red, a little swollen, and painful to the touch. I don't want my finger to fall off. It's been two weeks. Should it be better by now. I really don't want to spend 65 dollars to get an 8 dollar prescription of antibiotics. Want should I do?

The implement they were using on you probably hadn't been probably sanitized or disinfected.

You'll probably need to take an antibiotic by mouth. Also clean it with half hydrogen peroxide and half sterile water/saline. You can buy the sterile water at your local CVS/Walgreens/Rite Aid, if you can't find it ask the pharmacist where it is. Use clean gauze and dip it in the solution to saturate then clean the wound with that. Put the Neosporin on afterwards then bandage it up. I'd clean it several times a day.

I'd report them too. The manicurist probably didn't have a "real" license.

The costco account won't help because you need a Rx to get meds. Or sign up for their health insurance.

I say go to a free clinic and say you're poor and make under 1K a month. They don't check. Get free or low cost meds that way.

I would also report them to the health board. That's so nasty. How hard is it to alcohol the equipment?

Hey im sorry im late to post on this thread. I am a licensed nail technician. It is your finger still sore? Use some tripple antibiotic ointment or anti biotic powder if you can get it (Not sure if you need a prescription). Mix the tripple antibiotic ointment with tea tree oil (The pharmacy should have it) and apply it about twice a day. Still use hydrogen peroxide to clean.

    Hope it helps!!!

Thanks, babe. It was red and painful to the touch for about two weeks, but it's almost back to normal now. It does make me a little leery about getting them done. This particular salon is consistently voted best in the city.

I had a girl in a highschool class who had a nail infection after getting acrylics. She went to the salon, they sent her to the doc, got it fixed, and now she gets free services there, limited to nails, toenails, and waxes. (She can't get like tattoo eyeliner or anything free).

It doesn't sound like a nail infection as much as an infection from having the skin cut.

Get some Epsom salt, pour it in hot (as you can stand it) water and soak your finger in it. Epsom salt is good for pulling out toxins. When you're done, dry the finger off, put some neoporin on it and go about your day.

    That bitch.

^^ What VG said. Or Soak it in warm water and hydrogen peroxide. Then put neosporin on it.
