I was just wondering if anyone leaves the air conditioning on for the animals on super hot days? I feel like I should but the electric is through the roof already!!!

i do. i have a dog and 2 ferrets.

Yes. Heat can cause major brain damage. As little as a 2 degree internal body temperature change can be fatal.
Because there ain't no tits on the radio

leaves the air conditioning on? i didnt know people turned it off...why, bc youre not home or something? i dont want to come home to a hot house!
but yes, animals can die from overheating.
My AC can be set to go on and off at certain times. Mine is set to go off for several hours during the day. It isnt enough for it to get really hot in the house, but saves some energy(my house is completely shaded so it doesnt get boiling hot even in FL summer)
But if thats not an option..and you cant leave windows open adn get a decent breeze flowing through the house...yeah..heatstroke kills a lot of pets. I saw quite a bit of it when I was a vet tech.
When we HAD A/C I'd leave it on for sure. It would be warmer, but not THAT warm. They seem to be doing OK in our house right now and the thermostat reads 91. They have access to ice and the basememt which is MUCH cooler.
I totally understand and would leave the air conditioning on when I am not home but my boyfriend is dead set against it because he is worried the window unit will cause a fire!leaves the air conditioning on? i didnt know people turned it off... why, bc youre not home or something? i dont want to come home to a hot house!

I think you should leave the a/c on for all the above mentioned reasons... but, if you can't you could always buy a box fan & leave it on for your pets?? Like put it in their favorite room & possibly close the blinds?
Look at it this way....if you wouldnt be able to stand it just sitting around with a fur coat on...they cant either. When I had a window unit we had it on for days at a time and it was never a problem. You can always turn it off at night when it is cooler for a few hours and run a fan instead so you dont wear it out or burn the engine..but if the motor burns out it isnt likely to start a fire..just shut off the unit.
Dont risk your babies health..heatstroke isnt pretty.

I leave the AC on for the pups, cutting it off or back is not even an option. I also leave the TV on for them too, they seem to love the game show network.
I do. It's worth the peace of mind that she's okay and I won't come home to a dead ferret and kick myself in the butt for the rest of my life. There are other options (I mentioned frozen water bottles in another thread), so if you really can't afford it, there are still ways to keep your animals safe.
If you think school is hard, try being stupid.
One day I accidentally left the air on like 60 degrees, so it got ice cold and when I came home she was rolling around the floor all happy and comfortable.
Yes.
Florida heat is crazy right now.
PABLO SPEAKS THE TRUTH...![]()

Back when I had A/C I always left it set at about 73-75 degrees for the animals

...people turn it off when they have pets?
God. On hot days, it's even warmer inside than out...and you'd leave your poor pets without AC on?
Many pets die that way, due to heat stroke and dehydration.
I always leave my AC on. also turn on a fan pointing towards the dog's crate. Airr doesn't flow in there so well, and it gets warm even with the AC on. I also put ice cubes in their water bowls. They like fresh cold water
I would say that it depends on whether the pet has access to cooler quarters. I wouldn't want to risk my cat's health for anything, either, but on the other hand one can't go broke paying the power bill. I try to use fans and leave plenty of water around, and turn the A/C off when it's cool enough to tolerate.
But, you gotta do what you gotta do. It's actually cheaper to leave your A/C on all day at low, as opposed to leaving it off and then turning it on high to cool the house. And you can compensate by making sure to turn lights and other electronics off while you're not using them, and/or replacing incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent. (I've actually seen a decent drop in my power bill from doing these things.)

Programmable thermostats are pretty cheap. I do have the A/C on during the day, at a setting of 80, then down to 75 an hour before I get home.

Yes, chinchillas will die at temperatures over 75 degrees.

Im so glad to hear we have so many responsible and loving pet owners on SW.
xoxoxo
There are many stereotypes about the industry that I work in. Sometimes they can be true but human beings are very diverse creatures and cannot be pigeon-holed into one category.
Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.
I try to be pretty sensitive to power usage, both for my landlord's sake and because David Suzuki is always on the commercials telling me I should. Unless it is really hot, the dog probably doesn't air conditioning, but when it gets really hot... yeah, I do. Keep doors shut and you don't have to go crazy; I mean you can keep it cool enough to be comfortable in a pair of shorts; you don't need to have it cold enough to require a blanket (I personally like to make it cold enough to require a blanket). Fans are not wildly effective for dogs unless you spray them down with water first.
I have a window unit, but I would never, ever leave it on when I left the house unless I felt it was necessary for the dog and cat. Regrettably mine is not a power saver. Does anyone know where to get something that will switch it on and off every 15 minute or so? All the timers I find are set to time of day, which is not really what I want.
I have taught that the sky in all its zones is mortal and its substance was formed by a process of birth
I don't know where you are or what your high temps are but with them being around 100 degrees here now on a daily basis, yes definately.

I always leave my A/C running for my dog. But I also don't like coming home to a warm apartment.
Its going to hit 98 degrees today in P.A.![]()

Absolutely, i keep the house at 69 degrees and up to 72 when im cold. It somehow got on 76 yesterday and my dogs look liked they were dying. I think raising them in 69 degrees for 9-10 years made them super used to it, they hate to be outside in the summer for more than a few minutes at a time.
ETA: When i used to try to control the thermostat (to save money) it by making it lower and higher at certain times, my bill was alot higher(ike 100 per month) than when i keep it at a constant low temp.
