    Default Let's talk about healthcare

My friend says it costs over 5k in medical if you break a leg. My bf says it costs a few hundred. I ask because I'm looking at some sort of health coverage that will cover an accident, but I don't want to pay very much a month (and I'm willing to wait it out in the ER if I catch strep or something and just pay the fee... I can't even tell you how many years it's been since I've had to go to the doctor).

I'm asking for people's experiances with accidents and their costs. Like, did you get in a car accident and puncture a lung, fall out of a tree and break your arm, catch SARS... whatever. How much were the costs? If you didn't have insurance, what did you go through?

HA! your bf is WAY off! it costs a few hundred just too LOOK at a person, not including any tests! but over $5g, that's a bit much, unless they are getting mri's cat scans.

i just pulled the bill from the last time i took a kid in and they had xrays it was a little over $3000. she had xrays to her right leg.

My docs visit for a 15 minute med check-up is almost 100. I doubt a broken arm would be just a few hundred.

I went to the ER for a miscarriage and all they did was take blood and give me an ultrasound and my bill was $2500.

They have really cheap medical insurance to just cover catastropic emergencies, but it's pretty shitty insurance with high deductible and large co pays..but if your lookign at severl athousand dollars in bills, then it can be helpful

Typical ER visit is $300 just to walk through the door....no labs, meds, or xrays.

I found this link, which is very interesting. http://cms.clevelandclinic.org/docum...HB197_2007.pdf

You can always go to places in your area, we have one called EmergencyCenter or something. I recently went there for my rash....$100. The visit went something like this:

Doctor comes in door....literally GLANCES at rash...."Well, its not herpes. Put your clothes back on and I'll write a prescription." The whole time I was in the little room took less than 3 minutes. Didn't ask any questions, no tests, nothing. Lets see if this prescription works.

Its bullshit, but I had to go there because I couldn't figure out what the rash was, and it was getting worse despite everything I tried. It took me a LOT to go there though. For me to go to the ER, I would have to be dying or in a SERIOUS condition. Its just too expensive.

The listed rates are usually astronomical. The rates that the insurance companies pay are much less. Here's an example: I had United Healthcare. My doctors listed rate for a visit was $120. United would pay him $45. Lab tests that would be around $200, would be discounted to about $60 through United.

So how do you get those discounted rates? The only way is to be covered through a major insurance company. There is a way though, with an HSA that you can have the best of both worlds. An HSA will have a large deductible and a very low premium. I have a $3,000 annual deductible through Blue Cross Blue Shield. My monthly premium is $170. I'm on the hook for the first $3,000 BUT I pay BCBS negotiated rates. I don't pay their listed rates. So a broken arm probably would be $500 for me assuming no surgery.

You can also set aside money to pay your deductible in a savings account which builds up tax free. It's an additional element that can pay off big time if you are healthy as you say. Let me know if you need more info. I'm not selling anything, I'm just a big fan of HSA's (and very healthy too).

^So I can make a savings account purely for healthcare emergencies that the government can't tax me on? Yes, please give me more info!

this may rile some people up but i claim really low on my taxes for this (and other reasons)

i get low income health care at a fraction of the cost with no insurance.

sure i cant buy a house right now (dont want to)
or a car without a cosigner (got one)

but at least my medical shit is cheaper along with mental healthcare.

I'm also interested in healthcare coverage. I just don't know what most terms mean. I found a link that explains most of it I think. Maybe it can help some of you.

In 2006 I went to the ER because I was dying of an asthma attack - literally dying, I very nearly left the party early that night. They gave me a steroid injection and a couple rounds of albuterol on a breathing machine, wrote me a couple of prescriptions, and I was okay. When I got the bill for saving my life it was about $3500. I didn't have it so I let it go for two years, during which time it kept getting lower and lower because they'll write charity care off their taxes. Eventually, when we moved to Oregon and we were on our feet financially, the bill was $75. I paid it. I guess $75 is what my life is worth, LOL!

I went to the ER in Vegas with a bladder infection (I was peeing blood and thought I was dying!) and it was about $4500. A few weeks later, I had to have emergency surgery to have 2 very large staph related abcesses drained and I think that along with an overnight hospital stay cost me the low, low price of around $20,000.

    2005 was not my year.

Here is my experience with healthcare and what not.
There was a gap of time that I did NOT have healthcare. I thought it would be OK. I was off my parent's policy because I was out of school, and I was thinking it'd be fine NOT to have healthcare benefits. I really fucked up that.
I ended up getting severely depressed and hospitalized twice. Once optionally, the other time forced. The second time was the most expensive. I had tried to commit suicide which put me in the regular hospital for 4 days unconscious. There was also an ambulance visit associated with that. When I was stable and cleared I was then ambulanced (not emergency though) to the other hospital. This cost me WELL over 10G and I had nooo money. I fucked my credit and got so far behind on bills that I couldn't afford groceries on my own. I was lucky my parents stepped in to help me (first time in their life to behave that way). I'm in a MUCH better place now financially and emotionally.
The moral is, GET HEALTH INSURANCE! You NEVER know what's around the corner for you. I didn't plan any of that to happen. It just did. I'd much rather had been paying $200 a month even then to have to endure those types of bills...especially when I had just come out of the hospital.
See if you can get Humana1 where you live. It's cheap, dependable and covers a lot. There are many levels and options as well. I am lucky enough that E's company allows for healthcare for significant others prior to marriage. It will be cheaper once we're married, but to even have that option has been a blessing.

Like RobertJordan said , the insurance companies get greatly reduced rates. I do not have health insurance , so when I go to the walk in clinic nearby I tell them I do not have h.i. , pay cash and get about 30% off. The secretary told me that is close to what the insurance company gets .

There is nothing wrong with that, hon. In fact, I am going to apply for GAAMP too as soon as I get a letter from my boss stating my income.

From what you've said about the earning potential where you (and I also) live .... it isn't like youre some rich person scamming the system....

no, it's awful to deprive people who are actually really poor, rather than 'stripper-poor' (making plenty of money and apparently not wanting to set up an HSA for healthcare), of services. you really are taking healthcare away from someone with a much worse financial picture and less earnings, because those budgets are not very large and can only stretch so far.

she is 'rich enough' to set up and pay for her own healthcare, rather than stealing from actual poor people. for every person like her, a bunch of actual low-income people don't get care.

You can see if there is a reasonable plan at ehealthinsurance.com , I think monthly it is like $75 to $150 for individual health coverage so that is actually less than what it would cost per month out of your paycheck from a "normal" employer. I pay $118 per month and I have Blue Cross coverage that was setup from there

Miabella...ummm.just because shes a stripper doesnt mean shes making tons of money..not anymore. These days many of us are LUCKY if we can survive...there are a LOT of actually poor strippers out there. So take those judgmental assumptions out of here.

When I didnt have health ins. I got pneumonia. I had an EXTREMELY high temp and was completely dehydrated. According to the Dr's,if my roommate hadnt woken up and found me half conscious on the floor..I would have died.

Went to the ER,got fluids, chest x-rays and some injectable med that stopped my stomach from heaving and knocked me out.I was there for a cpl hours.

    Bill....Almost $2K.

interesting. all my hospital visits that I didn't pay just went t collection agencies where they collected interest and got bigger and bigger, making it impossible to pay.
You actually have to request charity assistance for yoru bills during your visit to get any deductions. ( and I stupidly ignored the offers.)

i've heard wayyy too many no insurance horror stories (like some above) to ever gamble without it. luckily i have optional insurance through my school, i think most colleges have it... mine was around 400(?) for the year, the school medical center is where i go for non emergencies and discounted prescriptions, and then i think i have 50 or 100k in real emergency coverage, oh, and specialists are covered too..i've had this for a couple of years and i'm very happy with it.
These days I like to count my money. I like to wash it delicately and iron it. Sometimes I dry it with some bounty to make it all nice and cuddly. I love my money... did I say that out loud?

I'd like to discuss some related stuff in this discussion but I'd get pointed by a Mod for sure if I did because it relates to Universal Healthcare which is too Poo-ish for the lounge. So instead I'll just stick to this- Complete medical treatment for broken leg costing under a grand? NEVER. Not going to happen. What to expect at any ER. A very long, uncomfortable wait for treatment. Double the wait time and the cost if you don't have some form of health insurance.

In many ER's you can file paperwork declaring yourself indigent and you wont have to pay as much. I know a friend who did this and it worked well for her. She had NO money and sliced her hand almost in half on a broken cookie jar.

The last time I went to the ER (nearly a decade ago), I went in because of pain on the lower right side of my back. I couldn't walk straight and I was worried. I was given a couple x-rays and some pain meds and was told they didn't know what was wrong. A week later I received THREE separate bills totalling at least $3000. One bill from hospital, one from docotor, and one from radiologist (x-ray).
    Bullshit!
