    Default confused

As some of you may know I haven't been feeling up to par the last couple of weeks. I was still going to school despite not feeling good but taking forever to complete a single task. Friday I think was my breaking point. I got a ticket on the way to school. Then I had the worst customer service experience I've ever had. I won't go into great detail about it as it'll piss me off again but she was evil. I finally ended up speaking up for myself after taking it for four and half hours with no break and being on steroids. She would have liked me dedicate my whole day to her and she was the biggest cunt I've ever met. I think the steroids made me a little more less tolerant of bullshit. Plus I think dancing has gave me a no nonsense, no bullshit attitude towards work. I like doing hair but I just want to go in, do it, enjoy it and leave. Unfornuately life isn't that simple.

I am feeling like now I want to take a break. I have thought about working with animals but I don't know if I have the physical compacity. I know my heart is there. I think I am also discouraged because my instructor told me I can't refuse a service until I am licensed unless the person is cursing me. Well, I'm sorry, you don't have to be cursed to be abused. I payed 15k to attend school there and earn that school 2k monthly in service and product sales. I am not their fucking employee. I am not there to take shit and I am not a slave. I just feel so tired, worn down and confused. My grandmother keeps pushing me hard but that's making it worse. I feel like a failure. I could use some advice, anyone?

First, I'm sorry you had a shitty, stressful day and had to put up with ass clowns. I was completely stressed while in school and assisting... reminding myself that my situation was only temporary really helped me get through many a tough time.

What exactly did you say or do to defend yourself? Did you let the instuctor know what was going on before the situation escalated? What was your conversation with the instructor like? I ask because you need to speak to someone about this, and you'll need to acknowledge and take responsibility for your actions (or inactions) if nessacary.

How about starting with a nice long bubble bath and a glass of wine or watching a mindless romantic comedy? Try to decompress and not think about the day...

Tomorrow, if you feel less pissed off about the ass clown incident, calmly talk to whoever your instuctor has to answer to. Tell them about the rude customers behavior, how you felt it was abusive, and how you are frustrated that you were not supported by the instructor. Tell them you are very dissapointed that this would happen in a school with such a great reputation.

Again, I'm sorry this happened to you and I sincerely hope your day gets better.

Are you ready for a book?

Well, I'll tell you the whole story from start to finish. When I came into school that morning I already had a return client scheduled, she didn't show up. So, this client was given to me at the last minute as she decided she rather have her hair colored then get a facial. I walked up and the front desk staff was explaining to me what was going on with her canceling and what service she was getting done a single process color and flat iron. I asked where she was and she standing at the counter so I introduced myself, greeted her, asked her she would like a herbal tea or water, the typical way I greet my clients. She said no and seemed frustrated so I took her back. Her roots were a level 3 and her ends were a level 7 orange/red. She said she had been in before and liked the color of her ends but wasn't able to receive it all over because of sensitivity to the color. We didn't have a record of the exact formula that was used, we usually do but it was not entered into the computer. I found out who did her hair last and went and got her. They talked and looked at swatches trying to determine what color she liked and what they had used exactly. I came over and joined the conversation and we were all in agreement of a light pure base and intense O/R on the new growth with a 30 volume catalyst and the same color with 10 volume for the ends. She said she liked the way the ends got lighter so we said we'd only leave it on for a few minutes since the ends are already porous.

I sectioned her and went to the mix the color. I started in the back but she suggested I start in front in case we had to remove the color early from a sensitivity issue. So, I did as she requested. Then she asked if we could get another student to help me. I asked my instructor and she went and retrieved another student. She told the other student she was being too rough and wasn't applying it properly like I was. She didn't say anything but said she would be more gentle. We ran out of color and I told her I would keep applying if she wanted to go mix the color, we had it written down, this is a student who is senior to me btw and very well can mix color. She said, no, I want you to get the color. So, I went to get the color and the other student came up and told me she was being rude to her and she didn't want to continue doing the service. So, I got another student and we finished applying it. I told her I would need to rinse in 5 minutes so the color wouldn't be too dark on the ends. She said okay and said she needed to go the restroom. I am standing there waiting and then after 10 minutes I go looking for her. She doesn't return for 20 minutes! So, I rinse immediately after she returns. I go ahead and use our color shampoo on her and wash her lightly twice. We typically shampoo our ethnic clients three times but I didn't want to overdo since we are suppose to keep it on the lighter side when rinsing the color out. She requested I do the extra shampooo so I did. She asked if our services included a deep conditioning or hot oil treatment. I told her they did not. She said they did it last time. I told her that was because she was having a sensitivity issue and they couldn't finish the service. I told her I would be glad to do a treatment but I wouldn't have time to do the blow dry and flat iron and insure her leaving by 3pm. So, she decided to just get the blow dry and flat iron so she could leave when she needed to. Then I took her back to my station and she started rubbing her eye. I asked if she was alright. She said no, the girl that was pulling the foils out of the hair in the bowl next to her flicked some bleach in her eye. I immediately got her a wet towel then asked if I could do a eye wash for her. She said no, she was fine. Then she started looking at the color and said it looked good. As I was blow drying she said the ends were light enough which is why I asked her to come back in 5 minutes in the first place. I went and got my instructor and she said would personally fix it for her. She asked what time she could come back in and she said she'd have to check her schedule. My instructor told me to come get her and they would set up a time once she checked her schedule. So, I am am continuing to blow dry and she tells me to get it as straight as I can particularly the root, she has a full afro. So, I am working the brush and dryer to get that root and she says I am being too rough with the brush. So, I apologize and back off. Once I finish she asks me if I can make tight small barrel curls with the marcel iron instead of using the flat iron. I start doing the curls and she says they aren't tight enough. She gets the iron and said "on-base". I said did you use to do hair she said yes. She is getting really close to her scalp with the iron. So, I try to get closer while still using the comb as not to burn her scalp. She said for me not to use the comb and get closer. It's 2:30 now (I've been on her since 10am) and I haven't had a break or my medication. I decide to get someone to help me so I can get her out of there and take my break. So, I go get my instructor and she gets another student to help me. I got someone who I thought was decent with the marcel thinking maybe she could do a better job at get "closer". I go take a break to get some water and my meds. I came back and she is out there curling her own hair. The other student said she was rude to her and told her she couldn't do it right. I went and got my instructor and she started doing it. The instructor asked her how she was and she said she was frustrated because she needed to be at a photoshoot and had to leave at 3 amongst other things. The instructor asked me what had happened and I told her about the conditioning treatment and the bleach in the eye, etc. The lady claimed I didn't offer her a conditioning treatment and I did. She called me a lier. She said she was extremely frustrated now. At this point I am pissed and tired after dealing with this bitch all day and I said, ma'am you've been frustrated all day. She started going off and my instructor told me to leave and go the break-room.

My instructor said she wanted the service for free but they ended up just charging for the color, 30 bucks. She told me that she agreed she was rude but I've have more clients just as rude. And I'd have to learn to deal with it until I get a license then I can turn them away. She said she wouldn't let the client say anything obscene to me or the students but they are "preparing" me for the real salon environment. At this point I am exhausted and didn't say anything else. It was the end of the day and we left.

Okay, I'm still wrapping my head around the fact that the woman wanted orange hair...

Here's the deal, you did everything right. You let the instuctor know that she was extremely difficult before the situation escalated and you kept your cool. YOur instuctor did not back you up, that's very frustrating and unacceptable. You really need to talk to someone about this. Also, unless you failed to mention that you asked that the client be given to another student, I don't see why the instuctor would tell you that you can't turn people away... sounds to me like you were the only person willing to put up with her.

And as far as preparing you for a "real" salon environment, that's a crock of shit. The craziest, most frustrating, and demanding clients you'll ever meet will be in beauty school.

I wish you good luck. If you are pretty sure you'll pass, start looking for places to rent out. Or start up your own business plan.

Yeah, they frequently tell us they are "preparing" us. Well, they may be true for someone who has never dealt with the public or held a job down but I am prepared as I am ever going to be from being a nurse, flight attendant, stripper and now this. They have us do "housekeeping" duties as well such as take out the garbage, wash and fold all the towels, clean the break room, clean sinks, organize and restock products, etc. They claim this will prepare us for assisting.

I did tell the "team leader" about what happened and she was fine with it.

I have to say Mia, I think what they teach us as far as technique goes is subperb. I am impressed with what I have learned from an educational standpoint. I am not impressed with some of the instructors and the way they choose to handle things. The environment gets pretty oppressive after a while with the demands that are put on us. Morale is low and students are ready to get the hell out of there by the time they graduate. The only enjoyable part of the atmosphere is actually doing hair and seeing the results.

^^^ well, you're taking something very positive away from your school and that's good. You're getting a good education and you enjoy doing hair- dealing with the instuctors is only temporary... eye on the prize and all that jazz.

I will say that in a salon, you will find yourself doing everything you listed in your housekeeping duties well after you're behind your own chair... Our receptionists typically take care of towels, garbage, and backbar stocking, but if one goes on vacation we'll have a couple of receptionist free days where we have to make sure the towels get washed and folded. We also rotate out cleaning duties-every week one stylist is responsible for maintaing the shampoo area (make sure it's clean, keep liters filled) and one is responsible for keeping the breakroom/backbar area tidy and organized. No one can escape the cleaning duties... even the owner cleans out the fridge on her designated week.

Wow, she sounds like a real bitch! I'm sorry you had to deal with that. If they want to treat you like an employee then they should stick up for you in situations like this, just as a real employer would. Try to hang in there, and remember just a couple more months and you'll be done with them.
