    Default update on puppy-throwing marine

most of you probably remember the video i posted of a marine throwing a puppy off a cliff. there was much talk about if the puppy was real or not or perhaps "dead already". for those of you who live under your bed and have no idea what i'm talking about, this is the video in question:

    (warning: graphic)
    http://my.break.com/content/view.aspx?ContentID=463231

well there's finally an update here:
    http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/06/12/mar...ppy/index.html

"A U.S. Marine videotaped throwing a puppy over a cliff while on patrol in Iraq has been kicked out of the Corps, and a second Marine involved has been disciplined, according to a statement released by the Marines.
    art.marine.puppy.youtube.jpg

YouTube.com removed the video for violating the Web site's terms of use.

Lance Cpl. David Motari, based in Hawaii with the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, is being "processed for separation" and received non-judicial punishment, officials said in the statement Wednesday night. The Marine Corps would not specify what that punishment was because of privacy regulations.

The statement said Motari received the punishment for his role in the "episode which generated international attention."

The incident appeared on the Internet web site YouTube in March, sparking outrage from animal rights groups around the world.

In the video, Motari is seen throwing the dog off a cliff as it yelps.

A second Marine, San Diego-based Sgt. Crismarvin Banez Encarnacion, received non-judicial punishment as well.

Janice Hagar, a spokeswoman for the Marines in San Diego, said Encarnacion shot the video.

Marine officials at the Pentagon would not disclose the severity of the disciplinary action against Encarnacion, also because of privacy regulations.

CNN did not receive a response from the Marine Corps in San Diego to questions about the case.

The statement said the Marines conducted an investigation as soon as the YouTube video came to the attention of commanders.

"The actions seen in the Internet video are contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine and will not be tolerated," according to the statement.

On the video, Motari smiles as he is holding the puppy and then hurls the dog over a cliff. An unknown person operating the video cameras is heard laughing and another voice saying "that's mean, Motari."

In a statement, the Humane Society of the United States applauded the actions.
"The bad actors in this case have been dealt with by the Marine Corps, which rightly recognizes that harming animals is unacceptable conduct," said Dale Bartlett, the group's deputy manager for animal cruelty issues. "Now, the Department of Defense and the Congress must step up protection from cruelty for all animals under the law governing military conduct."

    and from this article:
    http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008...s-punishe.html

"Marine Corps representative First Lt. Binford Strickland told the Associated Press that the service may not reveal exactly what the soldiers did, or whether the video is legit or not, due to the Privacy Act."

privacy issues my ass, I never trust that phrase.
that's like my school that had coke and heroin addicts that were dealing on campus and when cuaght they weren't expelled or turned in to the police. Their punishment? To talk to their dorm hall about how drugs are bad.
I hope anyone involved get hit by cars, that would be nice punishment ( I hope no cars would be harmed though).

That makes my stomach hurt. What kind of sick bastard would do that? I'm glad they all got in trouble.. but I think they should all be thrown off a cliff while people videotape it and laugh.

I was sooo hoping the vid was faked. Why in god's name would anyone harm anything that can't fight back? I wouldn't be surprised if this failure of humanity was the high-school bully.

I'm glad people care about this dog, but since when are animals treated with any kind kind of respect and why is this example any more horrific than the others that happen all the time on a farm?

Is it because it's a dog?

No..it's because it was on YouTube and therefore people saw it. It wasnt something hidden behind the scenes that people KNOW happen, but dont have to see.

I don't think its only because its a dog although it being a dog and a puppy at that is sickening. The video is being aired on all the news channels and so there is no escaping it. Also, Marines are "supposed" to have a high moral character.

Dogs and puppies in particular are looked at in American society as defensless, innocent, members of the family.

Personally any ruthless, harm done to children, animals, or any innocent is disturbing.

I usually get pissed off about how children are treated and neglected in this country not to mention the world.....but thats for another thread.

People care more when there is no "reason" (i.e. profit) for it.

I agree with Jenny. I can't wrap my head around the whys of this happening. Why did they do it? Why did they think it was funny? Why did they film it?
    Why? Why? Why?
There really shouldn't be endless cruelty to animals, children or to any one thing that can't defend itself at all. And the fact that it happens every day doesn't make it any easier to swallow.

Jenny, there is no reason to abuse farm animals. I'm not talking about slaughter. I'm talking about ABUSE. Happens frequently, and it's on youtube. This video is nothing compared to many I've seen.

let's be real....if this was a chicken, this video wouldn't get any pubicity. Nobody would give a shit. And they'd still have chicken for dinner after watching it.

First - you know I'm on your side right?
But I think that the "having chicken for dinner after" is exactly why. If people ate puppies they would less able to afford caring so much about either their living or dying conditions.

I absolutely agree with this. I remember getting upset on a road trip after we stopped at chick-fil-a. As I opened my grilled chicken sandwich to eat it, a huge chicken truck passed us on the highway and they were all crammed in the truck and it made me sad to know that they were going to wherever they were going because of people like me, eating chicken sandwiches.

I wrapped up my sandwich without eating it and sat in silence for a while. After about 20 minutes of trying not to think about it, I realized I was really hungry. I unwrapped the sandwich and ate it. I was the person you are talking about. After seeing the PETA video and countless others, I am a vegetarian. I'm working on making the switch to vegan and I will never go back.

I know! I'm just pointing out how dogs seem to have rights that other animals don't have and it's unfair (to the other animals, not dogs!)

I agree its unfair. Unfortunatly animals are legally just property.

Untill we begin taking cows and chickens into our apartments and houses and begin treating them and loving them like we do our indoor cats and dogs, I do not think most of the people here in the U.S will have the same empathy for an out door barn animal as we do for an in door pet.

For myself If I saw someone throwing any animal over a cliff for the sheer glee of it I would be upset.

Actually that's standard within any branch of the military. As a Navy wife I can tell you that 99.9% of all crimes within the military never see the light of day off base, and I'm talking some pretty serious shit here. This only got press because it made it to the web.

Military discipline boards, trials and tribunals are all closed proceedings and matters of military records only. This is done in part because a service member's entire service record is usually taken into account. These will never be made public due to OPSEC rules (OPSEC=operational security).

Just an example of how tight OPSEC is. My husband is a submariner. When he is allowed to email me he cannot list dates, times, places, etc. Cannot mention when he'll be home, etc. And I cannot do the same with mine to him, no dates, times, whatever. IF I do know ahead of time when he'll be home, I cannot mention that at all ANYWHERE, because if it gets back to his command that I've violated OPSEC, his ENTIRE boat could lose communication privileges.

Yes the Marine is a scumbag and yes he did need to be disciplined, but as a military wife, I can tell you that there are very valid reasons the military does not make things public.

I wish that I had some really good words to type here but I do not. I can tell you that after 18 years in our local humane large animal rescue and a year and a half carry a badge and a gun as a state humane officer I can tell you that 95% of what I saw was stupidity. 4 % was something else and 1% was just sick. This to me falls in the 1% that is just sick and he needs to be getting mental health help. We had a saying that the number one form of animal abuse in the US was people loving the pets to death (Fat Etc.). I think that they saddest thing for me was that when I went to being a Deputy I found that people fought for the animals more then there kids. I have had to take pets away and kids away I needed to cary a side arm to take the pets away and I had people threaten me off duty for that but never had a problem for taking the kids away. How sad is that. All I can say is that there are some real sick people out there and most of the time the system does not really see that they are truly sick and deal with it. It sucks and that is why I am not in that line of work any more.
