    Default Craigslist pet ads

I've been reading a lot of CL pet ads lately. I can't tell you how many times a day I see somebody posting an ad to rehome their animal(s) because they just had a baby or they are having a baby and "don't have time". Based on that logic, no woman with a menstrual cycle or man living with a woman who has said menstrual cycle should adopt a pet because there is always a possibility of getting pregnant and having to rehome your pet because you won't have time. There were a couple ads where the people have had their pet for years and they just suddenly "don't have time".

I don't understand this.. newborns and infants are a crapload of work, but they also sleep a lot. How hard is it to play with your dog or cat for a bit while the baby is sleeping? Is it that hard to pet your animal when you pass by them on your way to get the baby a bottle? Toddlers will get down on the floor with you and play with the animals. What if the people were having twins or triplets? Or already had kids before getting pregnant? Would they try to rehome some of their kids because they "just don't have the time"?

What are your thoughts? Am I just being too cynical of people?

oh it pisses me off all the time. people saying i jsut got divorced no time for my cat/ferret/guinea pig...i mean come on those animals dont require as much upkeep as a dog.

i have been the guilty party before i got a quaker parrot, and i had to get it a new home becuase it made my anxiety horrible. anytime i went out of eye range ti would go off uncontrollably. i found her a great new home but still, i felt bad about it.

    That pisses me off too.

Old Southern ladies always harass people to get rid of their cats when they have a baby. There's a myth that a cat will sneak into the baby's room at night and suck out the baby's breath, killing him. Obviously cats don't suck out anyone's breath but it's amazing how many old ladies FIRMLY believe this and want to string you up from the rafters if you have a cat and a baby in the same house. Unfortunately, a lot of new parents get rid of the cats just to appease their little old grandmas.

Well that's a different circumstance, if I read your ad I wouldn't think twice about it. You didn't do it because "you don't have time". What the hell does that even mean?

i will say that its nice to see more hjumane societys and dog pounds posting animals that are in line at the kill shelter whos time is coming up. craigslist isnt all doom and gloom in the pet section thankfully.

i have emailed people out of anger before...sometimes its hard not to.

I thought that the cat/baby thing was that it would smother it? Or something along those lines of an old wives tale... or the litter being unsafe to clean if you're preggers.

Then again, the cats were fine in Lady and the Tramp, it was the dog that had to go... either way, it pisses me off when I see people take their animals to the shelter because of whatever. Grr.

When I worked in a pet store I saw that all the time. Women giving away their ferrets and rabbits and things. It always made me sad, and most of the people were heart broken. One lady came back the next day after leaving her birds to buy back her parakeets - and cried when one of them had been sold.

There's usually some lame "I can't clean the litterbox" story worried it's bad for the baby. SO?? Make your damn hubby do it.

On the other hand, I saw morons with small children and pregnant girlfriends buying alligators and large snakes.

There have been a couple of cats who actually have curled up too close to the warm baby, who couldn't roll over to get his face out of the cat's fur and suffocated as a result. This is why you don't leave the cat and the baby alone together. But the myth (which probably started this way) is that cats will suck the baby's breath out.

Kitty litter being unsafe to clean for pregnant women isn't a myth. Pregnant women are highly susceptible to toxoplasmosis, and can get it from cleaning the litterbox. So the one good thing about pregnancy is you get exempted from litterbox duty!

I have an 11 year old dog that I recently got from the pound. I just wonder what had to happen in someone's life, when, after 11 years, they realize this dog doesn't suit their lifestyle anymore.

Sure he's a shithead sometimes, but that's what makes him so special!

actually. I've acquired a few ferrets this way too. (too many!)

as for the litter box, you can always get one of those self scooping ones. I mean, if you really cared. Which, of course, usually they don't.

I knew about the toxoplasmosis, and have even cleaned out a litter box or two for a friend, but it's still not a reason to give away your pet... I could never do it... my kitty is a member of the family.

So, the couple of cases of accidental suffocation turned into sucking breath right out of the baby... have to wonder what the broken links were inbetween... myths like that always have interesting origins.

Self scooping... *drools*... oh to be exempt from litter duty!

    I wonder about this too!

Yes, I agree that people are shitheads for getting rid of their beloved pets as soon as a child is born or they get divorced, remarries, etc. In my opinion pets are children and should be cared for as such. You wouldn't get rid of your first kid if you had another, would you? it should be the same with animals.

On the other hand, it's better that they give their pet away than keep it and not take care of it. Both of my dogs were not well taken care of until I bought them. One of them had half his teeth rotten because his previous owners fed him people food! We had to spend several hundred dollars to have half his teeth extracted - and he's only 4! At least they're well taken care of now.

This pisses me off to no end. There are a lot of people out there who get pets as child substitutes...so when they have an actual human child..they dont "need" the pet anymore.
Thats how I got my female cat..chick bought her as a kitten, then decided it was too much work to have a kitten AND be pregnant. Thankfully she ended up spending the last 6or 7 years curled up on my bed being spoiled..but they dont all end that way.

I wish it was a law that you have to pass some kind of test in order to become a pet owner and they did a home visit before you were able to adopt an animal. It also pisses me off that it's over 100 degrees here almost every day and people just leave their dogs outside all day with just a doghouse for shade (sometimes) and a bowl of hot water to drink. I would never consider getting an "outside" dog living here in Texas. It's just too damn hot out there.

i can understand situations where the owner really cant take care of the animal anymore....like joining the army or having to care for a family member that cannot tolerate the pet (health-wise). it would be in the best interest of the pet to find them a home and owner that will love them forever. i think its fucked up when people get a pet without thinking it through. or dont consider a pet as part of the family and just as a material possession. even though it has to be hard on the pet in either case, i still think its best to find them a loving owner instead of leaving them with the neglecting asshole.

hell, i think there needs to be a license to have a kid too. you need one for fishing for chistsakes, why not pet ownership and childrearing.

I had to put a dog up for adoption on CL once because she bit my then two year old son in the face. For no reason. I was sitting there on the couch with him and the dog sautered in the room and then just lunged at my son. I got the most horrible emails in the world saying how all the dog needed was some training and I was a bad person for giving up on her so easily but seriously, how can you trust a big ass dog like a boxer anymore after something like that? I think in some cases rehoming animals because of children is an EXCELLENT idea.

^ Would you rehome your child because he bit a kid on the arm for no reason? No, you wouldn't. You would watch him closely to make sure he didn't bite any other children and teach him and work with him so he didn't do it again. Animals aren't objects, they are living, breathing beings that don't deserve to be moved from house to house because they have a slight behavior problem that can be fixed. If your dog did it more than once, then by all means.. I totally understand. Just one time though? That's not an excuse..

I'm not sure it's a good idea to let a child get bit twice just to make sure the dog is really mean. What kind of logic is that?

"Oh, it's fine, the dog only attacked my son once, I'm sure she'll be fine now that she's gotten that out of her sytem." My children are way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way more importnat than an animal. I will not wait for my child to be attacked twice by a 100 pound dog before I find a home better suited to her. That is stupid stupid stupid.

By your logic if a man hit you once it's ok if you stay with him because if you watch him and work with him enough then he may not do it again. Fuck all of that.

Would you adopt a dog that you new had attacked a child? So why should I have kept one that did? She went to a home of an older couple who's children were grown and gone and they weren't worried about a child being hurt.

dogs dont do anything for no reason. chances are he was playing and not being mean, or your kid did something that got that result. did he deserve to be bit? no. im curious how much training that dog had prior to that...or better yet did your kid know how to be around a dog? he was 2 kids that young need to be supervised well around animals. most kids need to be tought how to interact with them properly and untill they can they should be watched well.

i was bit by a pitbull that was my friends, it wasnt a bite but a dont do that again type of action. and i was in the wrong. i did something the dog didnt like that i wasnt forwarned about. i wasnt hurt, but it did freak me out but i didnt hold it against the dog.

The story went just as I told it. I left nothing out. The dog attacked my son for no reason. The dog was not playing. Her teeth were out and the fur on her neck was up. She bit through my son's lip and was a millimeter from getting his eye. He still has scars.

It bothers me that peole think animals should be given multiple chances to attack children before the dog goes. There are no second chances when my children are attacked.

no offence but if a 100 lb dog was attacking your child there would be nothing left of his face. it was most likely a warning, not an attack.

    anyway back to the OT.....
