Default Just wondering if this is important to remember

SPSS is kicking my ass, if I actually took the time to learn every little step I wouldn't get things done on time for this course. I've got a study group together, but we're all like WTF! and work on the assignments for hours or even days at a time in the school computer lab.

Anyway, I forget everything I just did as soon as I leave the compuetr lab. I want to go to grad school to study epidemiology, but am wondering if I will run in to SPSS down the road in grad school... because if I do I'm fucked. It is friggin hard!

Is this really important that I remember it? How much of what you did in school is actually required for your job (I suppose this question is geared toward the guys, or those of you that have/had a normal 9-5 job).

I got my BBA in information systems with a minor in finance and math. Since then I have been in the technology industry.

All I can say about my field is that no school can keep up with a changing market like technology. What schools teach (remember I am talking about IT) is theory, and you have to pick it up from there.

When I got my first job out of college was as an IT Manager for a mid-sized company. I was swimming since I only had theoretical training. But I learned and excelled. I am still in IT, and I am still leaning.

If I had to put a percentage on the stuff I learned in school vs. what I use…..I would say 30% of the stuff I learned I use daily.

As far as you needing SPSS….I have no clue, but trust me it doesn’t look bad on a resume. But don’t put in on there if you don’t know it.

Don’t you feel like you wasted a semester? I mean spending all that time learning it, and then forgetting it?

To me it sounds like you have bad study habits, not that the subject matter is to hard. Study groups never worked well for me.

There is no time for bad study habits. There isn't time for any study habits. My class is 4 weeks long and an online course. The teacher puts the assignments up the day the one before it is due, he is constantly writing wrong directions and having to send out e-mails with the right ones, and he only has online office hours for 1 hr every day so we can't ask him to help us unless it's between 11-noon.

SPSS, in my experience, pretty much walks you through everything if you read the help files...

as far as using it in the "real world"... it really depends on what you're doing. I have used it for psychology research, analyzing data and running stat tests and such, however obviously in the field, i won't use it as much, and since i'm not planning on doing research, theres not really any real reason that i should be using it on a regular basis whatsoever. i don't know what you're trying to get into, so i'm not really qualified to say whether you'll be using it regularly or not... although for grad school, since a lot of grad school is research, you may use it fairly regularly, however its something that once you figure it out, its pretty simple.

i learned to use it for a research methods class, i had to use it to analyze some data, which pretty much was all the class was (along with some theory) you could see if your school offers a class similar to it, or talk to an instructor about learning to use it more efficiently.

yeah. that class sounds roughly similar. i know it helped me. my stats class didn't really help with SPSS, but my research methods class helped more...

try talking to a grad student/teacher for help?
