    Default Is it just me??

I graduated high school less then 20 years ago and it doesnt seem like the world should have changed THIS MUCH is less then 2 decades.

When I was in school we'd look at someone doing something silly and say "she's so crazy..she must be on DRUGS"..and it was a JOKE. Now..its the norm in a lot of places.

People see teenagers going to REHAB and say "well..thats just what kids do"..WTF???

Violence,exploitation...the list goes on and on.

Is it me? Am I the one who has changed so drastically? It seems like the whole world has gone insane like in a sci fi movie or something and there are only a few of us who survived.

Ugh...it's just been one of THOSE days I guess....

I graduated in 2000 and I see a lot of changes too LOL!

I was talking to my friends little sister who is still in high school and told her how I kept a bunch of the notes I got back in school.

She looked at me like I was crazy and said no one writes notes any more they all just text each other !

Nope, I'm right there with you. Kids these days and all that, but it seems worse now than it's ever been. Parents quit raising their children, so we're sort of living in the Lord of Flies world, except the kids grow up and keep acting that way!

LOL. I graduated HS in 96 and just realized I've been OUT of school longer than college and HS combined! Ugh. How joyous to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of my 29th birthday.

But yah, I remember people only had pagers and we had that ridiculous way to try and make words out of numbers and what not.

I escaped my high school in 2002, and I will totally agree that kids that are just 5 or so years younger than me tend to be brats. I have met very few that are well behaved and respect the people around them. Most feel they are entitled to whatever they want whenever they want, and I've seen tons of parents who reinforce that behavior. It doesn't work like that in the real world, so what are they gonna do the first time somebody tells them no? Are they going to call their parents and pout about it?

    I just don't get it....

I am a relic of the 1980s-90s. I still say "telephone" and "please" and "thank you."

I don't even understand kids these days. I fear the day when I will be "dorky" to the kids I raise- I'm sure they'll have a new word for it by then......

ETA- some speculate that the "Mini-Grown-Up" state of younger people today has to do with post-9/11 social situations- we have to live with fear and turmoil present daily (2 concurrent wars, bad economy, terrorism fears)....So young ones feel entitled to act older since they are made aware of grown-up issues. Also why horror movies are big now, to de-sensitize kids to violence.

Yes, I guess I was raised differently (insert pack of wolves joke) so every time I open the door for someone or something like that people sometimes look at me funny.

Eh, I knew a lot of kids on drugs when I was in high school. I also knew spoiled brats, teen moms, and girls who got abortions. Kids haven't changed, WE have. All generations think the younger generations are "going to hell in a handbasket." Things aren't any worse now than they've ever been, they are just different.

And with the advent of the internet, these things are far more publicized than ever before. The crazy shit happened, but you just didn't hear all about it like you do now. Those are the biggest differences I see.

Lol, that's what all the kids did in the high schools I went to. It wasn't rare at all. Just about all of us smoked pot and drank every weekend, and the occasional Robo-trip. And this was in '89-'92...................ancient history yanno.....

Maybe its where you grew up. We drank in high school, but only the BAD kids even smoked pot. And any other drug was something people did somewhere ELSE...

And mind you..I come from a family with a history of addiction and spent most of my childhood in a part of Philly thats a total crack den now. I didnt exactly grow up in the sticks.

I had all my old notes from grade school too and lost them somehow we used to write long notes to each other and exchange them in the hallways between classes.

An embarrassing memory from the early 1990's- I saw a pregnant teenager at the drive-in movies (remember those?) I gawked at her openly. Her friend was standing next to her, saw my expression and rubbed her hand over her friend's swollen belly. "Your child," she said. (It's touching she did this for her friend.)

It is partially true that older generations feel like the younguns are going to hell in a handbasket. But I think the Internet age has made it faster and more intense. Also, frankly, American culture is aping global culture- it used to be the other way around!

I think it is good that parents are getting their kids help for drug problems. It is likely the fault of the system in the first place that the kids are into drugs. Feel sad? Take a drug. Feel anxious? Take a drug. Can't concentrate in school? Take a drug.

    All of it doctor approved.

No one took psychoactive drugs prescribed by a doctor when I was in school. We had to get our mind altering substances from that hippie guy in the crappy run down house near the greyhound station. And when parents caught their kids doing drugs, they didn't send the kids to rehab. They sent the kids to jail. Or kicked them out to live on the street. Where they formed gangs and scared the holy living shit outta the older generation.

The late 80's early 90's were some scary times. Lots of crazy kids on the streets doin' crime.

The number one best selling book on parenting at the time was a book called "Tough Love"

The book basically says if your teenager is troubled and won't straighten up and do what you parents say, kick him or her out of the house and make him/her live on the streets. It is laughable now, because the book talks about genuine emotional problems like depression and drug abuse. And instead of being loving and patient with helping the teen child deal with their emotional problems, the parents abandon the kids to the streets to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps."

So, CKXXX, I don't think things are worse today, just different. Damn kids! They never learn, do they?

Blast from the past- this paragraph reminded me of going to visit my brother in a California Youth Authority juvie facility- my mom was snarling to him through the metal cell bars about a show called "Scared Straight." (She was mentally ill too, natch.)

IMO American kids lack the real consequences of their actions in an extreme- in 3rd world countries, fucking up one's life results in a life in the slums (usually.)

Am I the only one who actually doesn't think there is as big a problem as others think? Since the days of Herodotus, adults have always complained about the behavior of the youth? Of course things are messed up, but they always have been and always will be.

I think many adults loose perspective of what they were like as children and adolescents. When I look at adolesencts today, I am horrified. I think to myself that I couldn't have possibly been that bad. I wasn't a perfect child and teen, but I was a good student, obedient, who was generally kind to everyone even if they treated me like shit. Luckily I have been keeping journals since I was 8 years old so I can see that even I could be a little shit at times.

From statistics that I have read, violent crime and teen pregnancy have all been going down over the past 30 years. Children and teens are actually more likely to visit their parents who are in jail than it is for the minor to be the one in the family who is a criminal. One of my buddies is in his 40s, has been the president of his own business for 2 decades and he grew up in the most lilly-white of all suburbs. His family looked like the Clevers and he was the valedictorian of his high school class. He remembers smoking weed and walking down the street when he was 12. Many baby boomers I know remember dropping all types of shit and fucking everything in sight. I think if anything, things simply went more conservative during the 80s thanks to Reagan and are now are back on track (for good or ill).

I also believe as other cultures around the world become more "first world", and the media is able to reach them, the same thing will happen, only accelerated, so I am not really worried of Americans being more fucked up than other cultures within 30-50 years.

I was a little tipsy while typing this and my keyboard is wacked so if the post is fucked up, that's why.

I went to a very small, fairly religiouse farm school. I thought I was a freaking rebel for being a vegetarian and an atheist.

But now days, I find myself agreeing with the farmers more often than not.

It was smalltown Indiana, not exactly a drug haven. And it was the same way when I went to high school in Naples, FL. Very different schools, very similar party favors.
