    Default Alcohol and Weight

How does alcohol affect your body weight? Has anyone stopped drinking for a while and lost a significant amount of weight?
I'm ready to take a break from drinking and was hoping to also lose weight, even though I've never really noticed weight gain when I drink more.
I was just hoping for some inspiration so I will actually be motivated enough to take a break, and nothing motivates me more than a better body!

If you consume a lot of calories of alcohol, and have a few pounds of extra weight on your frame, you will lose weight if you stop drinking.

^So the only way your body will add weight from alcohol is from the calories? I thought there was another factor..

It's just the calories and sugar- same as anything you consume. Just one beer has at least 100 calories and mixed drinks even more because of the soda and flavoring. And who has just one? Haha apparently I'm not alone.

^^ It depends how much/what you drink though. A gin and tonic or two isn't going to have the same calories/sugar as a white russian or a six pack of beer.

edit- huh? I was responding to a post that vanished...

Alcohol, by itself, won't do much to your weight. Especially if it's just clear liquor with no mixers. A typical shot of vodka is only 100 calories. Beer and wine have more carbs and sugar, but...

...he real trouble is what goes along with the alcohol! Sugary juice and soda mixers, and the foods people typically eat when they're sloshed (greasy bar food, takeout, etc.) Those calories add up way faster than the alcohol itself.

And...when you drink alcohol and eat, your body processes and burns off the alcohol first, and the food is mostly left to be stored as fat.

Finally...when you drink, most people don't compensate for the calories by eating less food, partly because alcohol doesn't fill you up. So if you eat a normal, say, 1500 calories of food...but then you drink 3 beers on top of that, that's an extra ~500 calories. And you usually don't notice that the way you'd notice eating an extra 500 calories' worth of food, because the food will fill you up, whereas alcohol doesn't.

My solution is to stick to plain vodka shots with no mixers, and not eat all day when I know I'm going to be drinking at night...but I know that's not the healthiest thing to do.

sorry. For some reason my post showed up three times, so I went to delete the multiples, and the whole thing disappeared. Weird. But I re-posted with more clarification.

hmm, i think a 1oo calories is still kinda a lot...especially since they are empty calories, and you have a couple of those and that's like a small meal in itself, and the 100 calorie ones are the most harmless ones...and especially if you work 3-4 days a week and have 3+ drinks/shift, thats a big calorie intake, so i think you wil lose weight
These days I like to count my money. I like to wash it delicately and iron it. Sometimes I dry it with some bounty to make it all nice and cuddly. I love my money... did I say that out loud?

I stopped drinking 3 weeks ago and I have noticed a change. Mind you I had been drinking every single day since December, so going from drinking every day to not drinking at all was a huge change for my body. I work out and watch what I eat but I lost an inch in my boobs, one in my waiste and one in my hips. I feel like when I drink I get more water retention, and feel like a balloon.

You'll lose weight if you keep your same eating habits. If you just replace the calories you don't consume of alch. w/food, then you'll stay the same.

well that definately adds up. think of how many calories a night, and a week! say you drink 5 shots in a night (and i certainly know girls who drink way more) thats 500 calories. then you go running and burn 500 calories. youre not burning off anything BUT the alcohol.

not to mention alcohol bloats you so you will look smaller as well.

so you're fine if you drink but stay within whatever your daily calorie allowance (for people that follow it) is? Great because that's what I normally do on the nights I drink..

I know it still adds up...that's why I don't eat all day if I know I want to drink at night or at work. That way it takes way less to get drunk (one shot will do the trick if I haven't eaten all day), and I don't have to worry about calories.

as for the bloat...drinking plenty of water throughout the day can do away with that.

Not that I'm encouraging people to drink, lol. That sounds bad. I'm just saying that the worst diet culprit isn't the 2 shots of vodka, it's the sugary Coke and plate of cheese fries that often goes along with it.

I've talked with my nutritionist and trainer a lot over this. Alcohol calories are NOT "digested" the same as food calories. The actual alcohol calories (and it's 90 calories for a true shot of vodka or other clear liquor) are digested by your liver-which is why you will NOT gain weight from alcohol alone.
Like many other people have stated, it's the soda or mixers, milk or what have you that causes weight gain. If your shooting Grey Goose nightly, and not prone to food binges then you're not going to gain weight...even if you don't compensate with less food during the day. HOWEVER, if you're drinking that with sugary beverages like sodas and fruit juices, or milk (for white russians etc.) then yes...you're going to gain weight ESP. if you drink a lot of them. THEN you have the foods that people love to eat while drunk. That's a whole other story.

    ETA:

Some interesting reading. And there are additional links on those. Some have actual research and data. Some data suggest that in FEMALES there is a weight reduction if you consume 7-13 low calorie (so vodka/diet etc.) drinks in a week.

that's like saying if you want a cheeseburger and fries for dinner, you won't eat all day to make up for it. the best way to maintain a healthy weight is by eating small meals throughout the day.. not eating slows your metabolism and therefore contributes to weight gain.

all i know is when i stopped drinking heavily i lost weight. whatever the reason may be. and i dont know many girls who drink shots of straight vodka all night with no mixers or anything else. i see beer, juice, champagne, whatever.

I like to shoot vodka, followed by a lemon
I also like vodka and diet coke.
A lot of girls I know that drink, but maintain their weight drink other clear liquors with diet. Bacardi and Diet is very popular.

This is interesting, especially what ajbaer said about how it digest differently than food, which I always thought since I never noticed weight gain. I will try a week off drinking and see what happens, even though not drinking at work last night = no fun and not much money. But that is definatly a personal problem and I shouldn't rely on that to work.
Also I am looking forward to waking up with energy to work out, which should help weight loss as opposed to being hungover in bed for a few hours after a big night of drinking.
I like the tips though of chasing vodka with lemon and stuff like that, I will keep these in mind when my week is up!

I used to drink pretty heavily, maybe 10-12 beers or a fifth of vodka 3-4 nights a week. When I quit, I lost about 25 pounds.

I should also add that although I have recently started drinking again, and I am a binge drinker who drinks till I throw up, and managed to get a stomach ucler by 22.
I stopped drinking for to years and slowly the pounds and have coming back and my money had been going down.. all of a sudden im drinking again my moneys gone through the roof, and I'm losing weight. And I still eat heaps.

Pretty sure I'm seriously messing my body up though. Probably end up with liver issues.

Pretty much everyone else I know loses their "puppy fat" when they drink though.

I try and drink vodka fresh lime and club soda as much as possible, and other low cal drinks, or do shots. If youre not ready to quite drinking, try and switch to "healthier" drinks. Steer clear from beer, mixed drinks, cocktails and liquors. Wine, champagne, and clear spirts with club soda or diet coke are all pretty low cal.

Right here.... I have just lost 6 pounds in about a month from not drinking as much. I drink one night a week maybe, and only straight shots, no chasers or nasty mixed drinks. I have NOT dieted, or eaten less. Although, I have a LOT more energy so I've been going to the gym a lot more

I LOVE this! My favourite is blueberry Stoli with water (it probably has more calories, but yum yum yum!).

I always find when I go through heavier drinking/partying stages, I lose weight. That's drinking mostly gin and tonics, straight shots of tequila or whiskey (not clear liquors), and white rum with Diet Coke.
I'm not sure why, maybe I'm eating less 'cause I'm always slee
ping in then having dinner and going out, but that's how it goes. Or maybe from all the drunken dancing and stumbling home?
That said -- definitely not true when I'm drinking beer! I love Corona and Canadian, but all those carbs just bloat me up.

i dont care what anyone says, and i was a vodka girl (even though i did like other things), there are studies that prove people lose weight. but like anything else i guess it varies person to person.

also a week isnt going to show you mega results. thats like if you cut out mcdonalds for a week.. you need time to show progress.

I've always eaten pretty well. I was a vegetarian for years but now eat fish cooked in lean ways. My preference is to eat low calorie and healthy foods. BUT, I've gained about 20 pounds since I started drinking heavily. I drink tequila with lime or wine. I know that alcohol has made me heavier.
