weird stage music works to get better money then dance

Ok the last three nights at work, early in the evening when the crowd isn't doing much but sitting and looking lost when we start stage calls.

I have been playing some off the wall crap for my music choices.

Like Karma chameleon by culture club, paired up with Betty davis eyes

Cure...just like heaven, followed by Edwin Mccain

the weird thing is it is getting the guys attention, it is so unusual of music they look up move to the tip rail and tip.
I lean over and tell them the dj dared me to dance to or bet me I wouldn't dance to it. They laugh, wait for me to get off stage then they usually buy dances.

So far for three nights in a row this has worked on the young crowd I normally can't do much with, some really old guys and a really nicely dressed black businessman that never buys dances..ever. from anyone.

have any of ya'll done this and had it work?

YES! And it wasn't even my request! The DJ likes fucking with me in a teasing manner, so he put on "Longview" by Greenday for my 2nd song (when I'm in my underwear).
I gave him the dirtiest look, like, "are you serious?!" Then attempted to do my very best - and I must say, I rocked it, haha! I was being tipped left and right and even getting cheers from the dudes b/c I was pulling it off pretty creatively.

I wouldn't notice a difference because I dance to weird music all the time just on principle. I've noticed that Big Bad Voodoo Daddy works great for getting everyone's attention, but my favorites are "Brand New Key" by Melanie (Google it), the Nancy Sinatra cover of "Flowers on the Wall," the Nouvelle Vague cover of "Dancing With Myself", and my ultimate favorite, "Gimme Some Money" by Spinal Tap.

My favorite is bad touch by the bloodhound gang.
Do it like they do on the discovery channel!
It makes me so hyper and giddy

too bad I was only able to convince one dj to do it for me once...

Glad you found something that works for you. I however, dance to "weird" songs all the time. It's my way of standing out from the other girls, and I'm weird anyways so I don't ever have to say "I got dared to do it!".

Yeah, I see nothing weird about any of these songs either, but the moral of the story is it's good to stand out.

I dance to "weird" music from time to time, which just means that people don't expect me to dance to that type of genre, but in my experience if custys are going to tip you, they'll tip you regardless of the music being played.

But it definitely helps to do something different. If we have too many hip-hop sets and not enough rock, I'll dance to rock or dance and vice versa. Dancing to different music keeps it interesting for me and doesn't type cast my dance style.

I have a unique style of dancing that makes it easy for me to flow to anything. Dancing to a variety of music challenges me as an artist because it's taking me out of my comfort zone and also exposes me to custys who wouldn't generally focus on the stage for certain song sets.

my music is always "different". i try to keep to keep a good balance between different and "too weird for the club", but i know what makes me money

i'll tell you right now, my best responded to songs are:

the smiths - how soon is now (yep. believe it or not)
placebo - pure morning and 20th century boy
michael hutchance - cover of the passanger by iggy pop
    tori amos - cruel
    portishead - glory box
david bowie - golden years (i also do well to rebel rebel, cracked actor and fame 90)
    the doors - roadhouse blues
    led zep - dyer maker
edwin collins - girl like you
    the cure- fascination street
the church - under the milky way (i was just tipped 100.00 to this friday)
    garbage - milk
    sublime - doin time

and some newer songs i added that are doing well:
    M.I.A - paper planes
    Q.O.T.S.A - burn the witch
    MGMT - electric feel

and IF the crowd is right, i can do well to harder electronic and industrial stuff, but only put that stuff out for the right crowd. otherwise it has a tendency to weird people out. :/

one of my favorite lesser known harder songs is combichrist "this shit will fuck you up".

this song is really well responded to at my club too! same with the smiths, the cure, joy division, the pixies, etc. ooh and justice!

i'm really bummed out though because the dj that used to play all the music like that got let go this week because we cut our dayshift. the 2 djs that kept their jobs play all hip-hop and rap (not that there's anything wrong with that) but it was nice to listen to something different.

i fucking -love- the pixies, but i have a hard time convincing DJs to play them because the current manager is weird about music. i could PROBABLY get away with where is my mind.

When I dance to "weird" music... it's

    Puttin on the Ritz
    Big Spender
    Move it (reel to reel)
    Ice Ice Baby
    Barbie girl
    Medium Pace
    Rock me Amadeus (sp?)
    Weird Science
    Axel F
    I'm too Sexy

just... really queer stuff..... especially when it's slow.

I've never got MC Hammer, but I've heard it done.
I also did "Grease" for a duo show.... it turned out well.

When I just get to work its usually dead and quiet. Not normally a good time to bring harder rock over the speakers... So I like to throw this song out there:

(this is the song, I have no idea who is dancing or what she's doing...)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIPtoSDY9Xo

When people hear it, they usually really like it because its not the 'norm.' Its perfect for the beginning of my shift and most times ends up in tips and a couple dances to start the night.

one of my djs plays me weird music that's sexy. the other dj plays me mainstream music that is depressing as hell in subject matter.

i'd like to pretend it's just cos i'm in a better mood, but i've had a bunch of guys compliment me on the music before.

i really don't care if "a good entertainer can dance to anything"...i guess i'm not a good entertainer. now play me my gravity kills, kthanx.

penny...i forgot about how soon is now. that used to be one of my favorites to dance to. it's such a depressing song, but the music is at least sexy enough that you can feel sexy up there, ya know. and i never thought of placebo.

i've been meaning to put together a mix for the good dj. will have to remember to add some of your songs. was gonna add some tori anyhow...cruel, really?

cruel is really one of the only amos songs that blends fairly easily. i get a good response from it. on occasion raspberry swirl works too.. because it has a faster tempo.

This was, like, one of my primary strategies for getting attention in tiny dive bars on a slow day.

I toned it down a little because I was getting dirty looks from club staff... WHY, I have no clue, since playing shit like "What Can You Do With A BA In English" from Avenue Q was actually getting all the video poker guys over to the stage and earning me good cash. And a couple clubs I was in had "Fuck Her Gently" by Tenacious D. Great for stage dancing; the time I had to do a private dance to it was a bit of a surprise though. I mimed bits of the song. The custie was definitely amused.

I used to love dancing to Rock Me Amadeus!

The Pixies and the Cure are actually NORMAL music for Portland. So is Cake.

Lol, Cake is totally normal for me. Weezer too...which is nowhere near as cool.

There is a point in this though that I havn't noticed before. I usually pwn with "Lebanese Blonde" which is all sitar sexyness, and it could be the wierdness factor happening. I'm pretty sure I'm the only person at LaBo rockin the Thievery Corp from time to time.

OK, you win. Musical theatre OSTs certainly veer off of the beaten path.
