Default Why am I gaining weight? No, really?

For all of my adult life I've been very healthy. I've been a vegetarian for 13 years. I don't really eat that much junk food except for the occasional binge when I have PMS. For the past 3 years I have exercised consistently. I usually do 20-60 minutes of cardio at least three days a week, sometimes everyday. I also weight lift at least once a week. Since age 19, I've always weighed 110 lbs, which I find to be the ideal weight for me. I'm 25 years old now.

But I've started gaining weight. I seem to be gaining about 2 lbs a week. If I keep this up I'm going to weight 120 by the end of the month. (Not a profitable weight for me at work). I started doing lots more cardio but it's just not helping! I wish I could say I was just gaining muscle but I now have extra cellulite, love handles and many of clothes don't fit right.

I'm starting to freak out. Any suggestions for me? Could something be wrong with me medically? I have to drop this extra weight!

I was going to say you're just getting older, but two pounds a week is excessive. Yes, you should see your doctor. That much weight gain that fast is probably an indicator of something medical.

try doing more weights. once a week isn't enough. i do weights at least 3 times per week. plus your body could be getting used to the exercise you do. if you usually walk then run instead. you have to keep shocking your body by doing new exercises.

Two pounds a week, when you're doing nothing different, is weird. See a doc. It could be PCOS or thyroid?

Do you think you could post your daily diet for us? Then we can see exactly what you are eating.

Ditto to what Jaiz.. said. You're at a turning point when resistance exercise is critical to keeping a youthful body. Cardio can be a nice addition to a resistance training program, but definitely don't skimp on the weights. REAL weights; not those barbie ones.

Sure..For breakfast I eat flax cereal with soy milk and blueberries and a big cup of coffee.

For lunch I usually eat a big pile of raw vegetables (I'm a cucumber addict), some fresh fruit and a cup of non fat yogurt.

I usually eat a bigger dinner: a veggie burger, rice, small salad and more fruit. I try to eat a lot of protein around dinner, when I have more time to actually cook something.

I snack in between meals as well.

I'll keep that in mind. Is there a video or something you could recommend? Also, what do you mean by REAL weights? I have 3, 5, 8, and 10 lb hand weights. I also have 2 pairs of 5 lb. ankle weights.

    ^^
    are u a member of a gym??
squats are good with a bar over your shoulders as are lunges and walking lunges again with the bar over your shoulders.
the weights u r talking about are probably not heavy enough. but u can do squats and lunges with hand weights too.

for these exercises I use about 20kgs (maybe someone can translate that to lbs?)

^^ No, the gym unfortunately isn't an option for me. I don't live near one and don't have a car.

Have you noticed anything else that might be related? Other health issues like fatigue or sleeplessness?

You might also look at how many processed soy products you eat. I'm not talking about tofu, but TVP, soy milk, fake soy "meat" products. If you eat a lot of those kinds of products the phytoestrogens could be messing with your system, too.

I had some real issues with soy products. I'm limited to good old fashioned tofu, now. There have been studies that indicate that non-fermented soy protein (like in soy milk and other fake meat products) can be very unhealthy and not recommended to people who might show sensitivity. The biggest issue is Thyroid problems from soy. But the health risks aren't limited to thyroid. I had problems with hormonal imbalances and extreme mood swings when consuming soy milk and soy protein powders.

    Thyroid soy article

Here's another article about soy's health risks.

    Paris,
How much soy product did you eat? I only eat a soy based meal if I feel I haven't had enough protein in a day. I try to get most of my protein from lentils, nuts and dairy. I only consume soy milk in my coffee and cereal. How did you know were having problems from soy products and how did you figure out they were the culprit? Interesting.

I have to say that that doesn't seem like nearly enough food. Have you done a calorie count lately? Especially if you're doing 3 hours of cardio a week at the minimum. It sounds to me like you've reached a tipping point where you're burning way more than you're taking in, and you've reached a metabolic slowdown. Especially if doing MORE exercise isn't having any results.

So if I were you, I'd look at two things.

    1. How many calories you're eating in a day,
    2. How many calories you're burning in a day.

I read Tom Venuto's "Burn the fat, feed the muscle" (torrent, hurray for free copy) and it finally gave me the answer I'd been looking for as to how many calories a person should be eating. He said that for weight loss, one should look to have a deficit of no more than 20% of their total calories burned. So if you're a woman who weighs 110 and works out 4x a week and dances too, you're probably burning at least 2000 calories a day, so you should be eating at least 1600 calories a day.

Reading that was really a light bulb over my head, because I could never reconcile how I was supposed to be limiting myself to a 500-calorie deficit, but I wasn't seeing results and there was a faction that always says, "You have to eat more!" Now I know. Your body doesn't take kindly to a greater caloric deficit than 20%. For some people, that's over 500 calories and for others it's less.

So, check those numbers. Remember that you're burning an awful lot of calories by dancing and working out, and being constantly at a deficit for a long time (especially a pretty drastic one) will make your body cling to any calories it gets. If you want to lose weight, look at upping your calories to about 1700 or 1800 so that you're still at a moderate pace for weight loss, but getting a lot more food. I bet you'll start seeing more results. You need more protein, too. I see you're a vegetarian, but look into a protein shake based on soy. There are plenty of powders out there.

Did u start drinking any other types of beverages (alcoholic or non) or taking new meds? If not I would probably call a doctor because two pounds a week is a really fast rate of weight gain.

It's not possible you're pregnant is it?

    how tall are you?

you need to start doing real weight training. pick up a copy of oxygen (the current issue would be a really good start, btw) magazine.

what level of intensity is your cardio, what types do you do?

you need to eat more protein. a lot more protein. you aren't getting nearly enough.

When I hit 25 my appetite went downhill, but the weight stayed the same. I'll be turning 28 and it's all I can do to eat half a meal once per day......still the weight stays the same. It's a good thing I'm perfectly happy to be 5'1'' and 115.

10lb weights are useless. I'm TINY and the lightest I touch are 25lbs and those are just for flies, everything else is 40lb to 60lbs. If you are using free weights, which admittedly are more effective, the weights would probably need to be a little lower to avoid injury, but I use the machines at the gym, cause I'm lazy like that.

    Could be either

a - Loss of muscle mass - therefore start doing more weights (squats/deadlifts fullbody workouts 2-3 times a week)

b - Too many calories in v out - Keep a food log and check it against a predicted BMR (http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/)

C - a medical issue (e.g. thyroid issues) in which case see a GP

Are you tired all the time, super sensitive to cold or losing your hair with this? These with the rapid weight gain could point to hypothyroidism. Might want to make an appointment at the Dr. soon

I use the machines too. But they still work, so hey! I too am pretty small (5'2, 118 currently) and I do anything from 50 lb flyes to 112-lb back rows to 225 lb seated calf presses. And believe me, you wouldn't know it to look at me. Heavy is where it's at!

I would add to the above comment that the only way 10 lb weights aren't useless is that if you are genuinely challenged lifting them. Everyone has to start somewhere. (I know when I started doing shoulder presses, I could only do 10 lbs.) But if you're not challenged, you should absolutely lift heavier. If lifting a 10 lb weight gives you about as much challenge as carrying a carton of milk, you should definitely kick it up a notch or three.

Lift more and heavier; and eat a big protein snack afterwards. Jarlsberg lite cheese singles are great for that (low fat, high protein, quick.) More efficient food will drive your metabolism up, as will more muscle mass.

i agree with aviendha in that doesn't sound like enough food to support your active lifestyle. it also sounds like you're not eating nearly enough fat. fat is essential because it helps you feel full and helps you absorb vitamins.

i recommend adding good-for-you fats to your diet: olive, canola, peanut, grapeseed oils, whole milk (yes!), nuts, and avocadoes. add more protein, too. avoid processed fats like the plague.
