    Default About Cops and Raids

My fiance and I had a joking conversation yesterday where I asked him, "What did you learn in high school?" He answered lightly, "Don't ever talk to a cop." We laughed about it, but with the talk on the board about recent raids, it got me to thinking...

I saw this video last night. It's a little long, but has some GREAT information:

One of the things that worries me the most about stripping is the risk of getting busted, even when I'm not doing anything wrong. Unfortunately, there are so many laws that it's hard for even a clean dancer to avoid violating ANY laws.

One thing to remember is that while the advice in the video is technically correct, you have to be VERY cautious. After all, "You can beat the rap, but can you beat the ride." I do think that you have to always remember to be friendly, polite, and courteous. You also have to keep your mouth SHUT.

Anyone else have any advice for what to do if you have a cop encounter? Please share!

Everything I ever learned about my rights and the cops, I learned through an organization called Cop-Watch. Its a fantastic resource. Especially check out the Your Rights and the Police Card. I have one printed on my fridge. Please check out the site:

Another awesome group is the Just Law Collective in the Bay Area.

Beat the Heat by Katya Komisaruk is a great book that has parts which are designed specificly for sex-workers confronted by law enforcement. You can order it online or probably even check it out from your local library!

    ^^
For the most part, no. The police procedure for apprehending and interrogating a suspect are the same where ever you go. I've been in arrest/interrogation situations in three different states (four, counting Guam). Its always the same. As long as they read the Meranda (sp?) rights to me (which also doesn't change), my behavior is the same each time.
The people who designed the Cop-Watch program did so in a way that its model could be used in the entire US or in regards to US citizens in demonstrations internationally.

Also, make sure you've got a good lawyer and a buddy at the ACLU on speed dial just in case they (cops/ arresting under-covers) DON'T read you your rights. It happens all the time.
