omg i love camilla belle... ever since i saw her in practical magic... she's so unique looking and gorgeous!! I loved all the characters and costuming in apocolypto too, but i think i like 10,000 bc better because of camilla. and i love the dreads too.. even though they weren't real for the movie..

I think it was good. It wasn't historically accurate regarding the egyptians, they had some weird costumes going on. and... i think the pyramids were made by higher-elevated beings that could move things with their mind, not wooly mammoths and slaves. the wooly mammoths would have died in the desert, and they had thousands of them in the movie. It had a lot of cool special effects, and the scenery was beautiful- it was shot partially in new zealand! the parts in the desert were shot in africa.

thanks keira. The movie is on pay per view and rentable. I thought it was up my alley based on the previews

Off topic, I am of like mind on the pyramids and the sphinx for that matter. I'm not sure about the mind control thing but I do believe there was technology involved that we do not currently understand and that might indicate a very advanced civilization pre-dating the accepted time line.

The thing about the pyramids is, that there is a clearly discernible progression, from the first known monumental stone edifice built by my namesake Djoser (the Step Pyramid), right up to the Great Pyramid and the other two at Giza. Then the massive effort by a large proportion of the population required became too much of a burden, and the pyramids were built smaller and smaller. By the time of the Middle Kingdom they were being built with mud brick and rubble cores, which is why they haven't lasted so well.

There were plenty of uncompleted projects and trial and error pyramids before those at Giza. It's not common knowledge, but Khufu's predecessor Snefru actually moved and placed more volume of stone than that in the Great Pyramid, in the process of building his own pyramids (three of them). One of them was built at too high an angle and had to be altered halfway up, which is why it is called the Bent Pyramid.

It's not like some authors would have us believe, that the Great Pyramid suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

Sorry, you guys got me going, pyramids are among my favorite things in the universe...

I would love to see the movie whether it's fantasy or not, even if they have wooly mammoths building pyramids. It looks like fun, and yeah the girl is cute, lol.

Oh I was trying to avoid spoilers but it seems we're already there (don't read on if you don't know the plot). Okay my problem with it was that you don't have to set a film in 10,000 BC to tell a story of slavery. There are many other, more interesting, and more poignant time periods to tell that story. I went to see 10,000 BC because I wanted to see a cool action movie about life in 10,000 BC (no cities, just a few small towns amongst a nomadic stage of humanity), not life in 4,000 BC. Also, we have lots of movies about slavery, but not many about 10,000 BC or early human life. The movie was a good 5,000-6,000 years off, so it was NOT a film about 10,000 BC. They took a fairly unique idea, and then went the route of ruining and avoiding the whole unique idea part.

i've read from a number of authors that the pyramids were built around 12,000 years ago, so 10,000 bc would actually be correct for them showing the construction of the pyramids.... am i wrong?

In order to avoid further threadjacking, there is now a 'Pyramids' thread in the Lounge, but here's a picture of the first pyramid ever, built by Djoser.

Ha! I just watched 300 again last night and only watched the battle scenes (which fortunately was most of the movie). It's allowed, unless maybe the movie is Scarface or one of the other classics that really need to be seen in entirety.

Even Scarface, which I have seen like 317 times--it's no longer necessary or rewarding to watch the entire movie unless I am with a novice who has never seen it, in which case a bit of the original thrill can be recaptured by being there with them.

Cayce seems a little weird to me but I have read some articles here and there disputing the accepted age of the pyramids, Sphinx etc. Indeed some folks are suggesting 10,000 BC or even earlier especially the Sphinx (water erosion etc).

I think it is a pretty interesting topic. Djoser may have some insight on it since he has spent time studying the subject.

Holy shit, I just saw a bit of this movie playing behind the desk at the gym--they were showing the mastodons building the pyramids. Fuck historical and paleontological accuracy, it looked really cool--I want to buy the DVD for this scene alone!

Bad DJ, posting from work--but it's slow so far...

yeah- my roommate used to have that same kind i swear!! they're ciba vision illusions opaques. they're handpainted and they come in glass vials and cost like 100 a piece. She used to wear them when she went out to the bar and because there's like NO peripheral vision, she would be stumbling when she left for the night and running into everything and falling over when she came home drunk. she got them because she read that they were the kind paris hilton has. they actually looked natural on her though.
