Default I want to be a waitress

Anyone have any tips on getting hired? Most of the places that are hiring require experience, but I'm not sure how to get experience in the first place if they all want experienced people. I almost a year and a half of food service experience, 1 in fast food and almost half a year baking in a bakery.

I know that with my job experience in food service and my 8 months as a secretary combined with more than a year and a half of stripping leaves me ready to take on all kinds of challenges. I just don't know how to get in!

Have you thought of waitressing in a strip club? They may overlook the fact that you haven't waitressed because you are comfortable in the environment. I'm waitressing at a club while I decide if I want to dance, and I got my waitressing experience from a restaurant that hired inexperienced girls. Keep looking, I know at least in this area the only way to know if they are hiring (at many places) is to ask. Good luck.

The closest sc that has waitresses is about an hour away, and I have thought about going there and trying that. The thing is though, one of the main reasons I'm looking for a waitress position is that stripping just isn't worth it in this area and going long distances for work on a regular basis doesn't work with my school schedule.

I drive an hour right now to waitress at the club because it is the only upscale club around. I've made between $50-100 in tips (after a 3% tip-out of sales to the bar staff), but I've heard money can be between $300-500 on good nights -- if you have regulars/work at the right time of year/ect... For me it's not really worth the drive for the tips, but I'm also setting up connections that I feel will be important to me in the future. There is a club nearer to home that I will probably try to get a job at when the winter months come around with all the snow.

There are always placing hiring here for waitstaff... but the money isn't normally there until you put in the time to get the good shifts... Try and get an interview somewhere, even if they say they want experience, sometimes they are willing to train someone with the right look. At the last place I worked, if you were called for an interview you had the job. How the boss selected? Looks only. Anyone can learn. Good luck.

Honestly, pick a bar that recently went out of business, and just say you waitressed there. You obviously have some computer skills if youre on SW so I'm sure you'd be able to pick up the Micros (bar computer system) with ease. just don't pick a super busy place to apply at, and you'll be able to pick it up

    Sometimes resumes must be fudged

I'm not sure where in Oregon you are, but pretty much any restaurant/bar (unless it's upscale and fancy) will hire you without experience and train you. I mean, they have to train you anyways regardless of whether you have prior experience or not. You have to learn the menu, how they run credit cards, POS systems, how they want you to implement customer service, etc.. I say apply anyways.

^ Bzuh? What part of Oregon are you talking about? I've had pizza places looking for CASHIERS look really eager when I came in the door toting my resume, and then literally scrunch their noses up when they saw I didn't have food service experience.

I had that problem. Just lie. Tell them you worked in a small mom&pop diner during college or something. It's not like stripping, because your inexperience will not be obvious -- if you're used to going out to eat, you know the gist of what to do already. And as Virgo said, each place will have its idiosyncracies and policies and you'd have to be trained on them regardless.

I've never heard of places wanting that much experience. GEESH! Pick a chain restaurant. They have hiring procedures and guidelines. Man, around here if you can speak fluent enough English to get by they'll hire you. I walked out on my manager once at Outback about 2 years ago. I was mean and hateful about it too. Now everytime I go in he's BEGGING me to come back. ????weird

I suppose if you are not just making up a resume that bussing or hostessing is the "entry level" position. Most people just start somewhere where they know someone, don't they? Do you know anyone who works in a bar or restaurant? Is there a place you go all the time where they know you there? Waitressing, much like the rest of the world, seems mainly comprised of "my cousin's roommate needs a job; she'll definitely show up on time."

It isn't brain surgery, but there is a learning curve. Lying about your amount of experience you can probably get away with - if you have none at all, they will notice that on your first day.

Yeah virgo, I've seen an ad for a DISHWASHER that had to have experience LOL

I've been trying this too, and no luck. I suppose maybe apply as a busser first, or a place like Applebee's or Sharis. Still working on it, just applied to McMenamins and I don't think they're interested

IMO one knows whether they have the capacity to wait and bus tables (not so complicated, just fast paced HARD work) if you really need a job, say anything to get your foot in the door and be as amiable as possible to everyone. Waitstaff jobs have a high turnover rate and they're used to having to help newbies- they probably need you more than you need them.

//Yeah, it's irresponsible advice, but I hate it when people want to work and let little things get in the way of that....One less person on unemployment/welfare

ETA- Don't give up on a job you want...HR managers always notice applicants who make a peristent effort to get the job, versus someone who just fills out an application and disappears.

As a former server, I'd advise against seeking that kind of work. The hours suck, the money usually isn't that good, and you get treated like shit.

APply regardless of your experience level, though. If you have good inter-personal skills, you'll get hired. I used to be in charge of hiring and training servers for a chain restaurant.

What I did was go to a chain restaurant - like someone posted. The training there was about three weeks and you don't get tips (you 'follow' someone and they get it all) but you get your hourly wage.

I didn't have any waitressing experience other than in a bar/club and even then I had to talk my way into the job. It was worth it as I needed a place to work while pregnant. The hours were pretty crappy but the days go by so fast as you rarely get a chance to sit down - if you do, you're cut and get to go home. I personally liked the fast-pace nature of it and the tips were pretty decent.

Are you looking to get into a high end place ? Do know food / wine a bit ? I'd try a high end place if I were you. I'm not sure what area you are in though. I've already written on here about how to get a bartending job ... basically you lie and say you worked a few months at a small bar in college and then once hired, you'll have real experience and you won't have to fib.

Also ... in higher end places .. looks matter ... they can can help you.

Sorry guys, I really need to figure out this multiquote thing.

Since I haven't finished my bachelor's degree, I don't think I qualify for anything much higher than a minimum wage job, which is why I was looking for a tipped position.

Who knows if the job is cut out for me, but I do know that the frantic atmosphere at the bakery and the fast food restaurant was fulfilling to me, even though the customers and management treated us like crap.

You've got to be fucking kidding me! The economy in Oregon must be horrible if they're asking for dishwashers with experience. I mean, who in the hell can't wash dishes?? Geesh-that's effingn crazy! Good luck.

Unless it's a super duper busy high class club, I can't imagine that they REQUIRE experience from a waitress. A bartender, that's a different story, but if you're hot and have a great attitude, they should hire you off the bat for waitressing (if they need help). If you dont' have experience waitressing, tell the mgr that you learn quickly, love being around people, explain your previous work in the club.

Re: Oregon, well, it's the slow economy and also something else -- EVERYONE in Oregon is a goddamn artist. (I say this as one of the goddamn artists.) And rent is cheap, and restaurant work is actually not so bad when it pays the bills, and so lots and lots of people want it and every other casual job out there. We're all a bunch of eccentric freaks who find night shifts and retail work less stressful then dealing with an office. One time I was applying for a convenience store night clerk position and the guy told me, "Anywhere else, in any other state, we'd get *fewer* applicants for graveyard... here we're always flooded because people WANT the night shift."
