    Default I have a binging problem :(

I went a few months without doing it but lately I've been binging again. While reading SW or PerezHilton. I have a stomach ache tonight. I ate 1700 calories in one sitting this afternoon, including 300g of carbs. And then a ton of raisins and cashews tonight. Ugh it sucks. I went grocery shopping the other day to get all kinds of good foods -- all of this is natural stuff, like yogurt, raisins and pita bread and hummus -- and somehow I guess I just couldn't control myself. Ugh it is the shittiest feeling. Altogether I ate 2300 cals. I guess I can run it off tomorrow and the next day, but I just feel so icky.

I'm sorry. I can't really offer any help or advice. I have been there. I used to binge (never purged) myself up 40lbs and then I would get a grip and be super strict and lose the 40lbs, then binge back up. Like yo-yo dieting in reverse.

I went to a psyc, in search for somehting that would help the depression I didn't feel and each and every other DR thought I had.

I wasn't depressed and eating because of that. I have ADHD and lacked impulse control and DAMN! Those keebler cookies are good... Adderall keeps me in line now and I have not binged in a couple of years.

Worth looking at why you binge eat and seeing a DR if you can to help you. Bingeing is just as bad an ED as any other.

Wow thanks for your reply. I'm not depressed either, though sometimes I do feel lonely and that's when I tend to eat. But I am impulsive as all hell, like you. I wonder if ADHD meds would help me. I tend to fluctuate about 5 to 10 lbs with the yo-yo stuff liek you, too.

Hmmm....what are you feeling when you're in a binge?

Is it like an uncontrollable urge, or is it more mindless snacking?

The only reason it sounds kind of like it might be an ED issue is that you are totally aware that you had exactly 1700 cals and 300gs of carbs...sounds like you're really into counting food/calories? More details please...

It doesn't sound like mindless snacking (my worst habit) if you know exactly the calories and carbs you consumed. I overeat all the time, like at barbecues and stuff (it's summer in Texas, what's a girl to do?!), but I really don't sweat the extra serving of brisket anymore. And the 8 beers. I just hit the gym really hard the next week. Don't starve yourself, everyone wants to pig out sometimes. Just try to keep it to a reasonable amount, and take care of yourself afterwards by hitting the gym or going for a long long long walk.

I try not to calorie-count. What you ate doesn't sound too bad! And you should be eating around what you consumed, anyway, according to various nutrition sources. I find the stress of worrying about what I'm eating tends to make me feel grosser and less healthy than the actual eating.

I have one also. I've gotten help for it but walking, doing other things does not stop the urge to binge for me.

I do this too. I'll go into the fridge and eat and eat and eat and then make more food while I'm eating and I feel so sick afterwards. I get compulsive with textures and balancing sweet and salty. Don't start purging...seriously that made binging more "acceptable" in my mind and I started doing it at every meal. It was really out of control...

I've been keeping a full watermelon (seeded) in my home. When I feel like binging I'll cut it in half and put it in my lap and eat it with a spoon (it's not messy). The water will fill you up and digging around the seeds might take your mind off "EATEATEAT!!!". also then if you DO continue the binge you'll already be at least half way full already.

    BRILLIANT IDEA! stolen lol.
My previous stop-a-binge food was porridge but that still takes some time to prepare.

I don;t usually count calories, it's just that I wanted to see how bad the damage was. It wasn't the only thing I ate all day -- it was just what I ate in one sitting! I ended up eating 2500 cals that day. I went running yesterday and low-carbed it and I feel a lot better today. I'm just gonna keep working out every day this week and eating low carb and I should counter the effects.

I don't really know how to distinguish between mindless snacking or an urge. I guess it's both? I think I generally feel a need for comfort when I binge -- I just feel lonely I guess when I start munching. But then I feel compelled to keep eating even when I don't feel good about it. I may even be stuffed full and have to keep eating. Tht's the compulsion end of it.

I think I've figured it out: Binging is a way of comforting myself with food. I do it when I feel anxiety, which sometimes also manifests as loneliness. Tonight I got the urge. I ate a cookie, a sugary candy bar (almond/coconut bar) and then ate two vegetarian tacos at Taco Bell and drank a sugary soft drink. I feel miserable. If I could figure out some other way to deal with my anxiety, I guess I'd be a lot happier. Maybe I should work more days, so Ihave less time to feel!

Make a rule not to allow yourself to eat while on your computer, watching T.V., or talking on the phone. You are more prone to lose track of what your eating, when you also have your attention elsewhere. I also like the watermelon idea! Just don't eat it while watching T.V.

2500 cals is hardly bad for a day's eating, especially if one is already pretty active. for one day out of the week, it's not really a problem at all. if i go out to a fancy dinner and eat 2500 cals in one sitting, that's not binging either.

your diet should be flexible, and then an occasional high-calorie day will be just part of your overall diet and not a cause for alarm.

I binge when I'm stressed, but I don't do it as badly as I used to. Honestly, 1700 calories isn't even THAT bad of a binge. I've gone over 4000 when I was really out of control, and then I'd feel real sick.

An easy way to help the problem is to get rid of binge-ables from your fridge and pantry. Stuff that's easy and tempting to put back by the fistful. Junk food of any kind too. If you want a treat, make a special trip to the store, you know? Then you won't be tempted to throw back a whole box of stuff.

A food diary helps. You can keep track of what you eat everyday for a week, and record what you're feeling when you eat. You might see a pattern- what kind of feelings precede the binge, for example. Then try to find ways to deal with the emotions that doesn't involve food. Problem solving ahead of time is a good plan.

Also, try to eat regular meals. If you let yourself get too hungry, you might be encouraging your appetite to go buck wild later on. Too much caffeine or sugar can also make your cravings go all over the place, and possibly lead to a binge.

I think these are good primary steps to look into, before seeing a doctor. Binging isn't that uncommon, I don't think.

Yeah, you're totally right. The reason a lot of people binge/drink/inflict pain on themselves is so they have something to focus on other than whatever is REALLY bothering them, you know what I mean?

Like you were feeling lonely, and it made you really uncomfortable, so you ate and then focused on the binge and on being mad at yourself about it, because believe it or not, that is more comfortable than focusing on your anxiety.

Allow yourself to FEEL bad feelings, anxiety or whatever, no matter how uncomfortable and try to solve them and the binging should stop.

Thx for ur advice. Tonight I was feeling anxious and I wanted to go binge on chocolate, but instead I meditated, drank some kava tea (natural anti-anxiety) and took a shower and it helped tremendously! I got rid of the anxiety. But I still am kinda dying for a Twix bar. Maybe I'm also a chocoholic.

You're welcome! And a craving is TOTALLY different from a binge! If you want something, like a TWIX have it! That is totally key too in preventing a binge because you don't feel deprived.

I had a big problem with night-binging when I was first recovering from Anorexia...I think my body and mind were like, oh my god! She is letting us eat! eat eat eat NOW NOW NOW so it happened (the urge to binge) when I was tired. So I made up by starving during the day. I made it my goal not to binge at night and eat whatever I wanted during the day and it helped tremendously.

I feel like I have struggled with my eating habits all my life . However I switched to a low carb/ low sugar diet about 6 months ago and things have gotten so much better. Now that I don't eat much in the way of refined carbs and sugar I don't get the intense binge cravings I used to get.

Now when I am hungry I snack on fruit, veggies, cheese, and nuts. I also have to be very careful with portion control. I set out how much I can eat on a plate...and that is it no more.

Every once in a while I'll want a piece of chocolate so I'll have a little piece of sugar free dark chocolate and feel good. In the past when I wanted chocolate I could hoover back like three snickers bars and then feel horrible about myself.

Why post this? Seriously. You know it's a fucking EATING DISORDER and yet you act like it's the solution to the problem. I swear everytime I read Body Business lately it's like I'm on a pro-eating disorder site. It's fucking sick.

yeah, i've got that same problem. and eating well the rest of the time does not help at all. it just adds to my daily calorie count after a binge.

it's emotional. the only thing that helps is taking some time to think about what's really bothering me. cos if i were really hungry, a bowl of oatmeal would be just as good as a big ass order from mcd's. my biggest problems are the times i can't even rationalize with myself.

i'm glad that thinking about it helped you.
