    Default Car Insurance

Did a search, but didn't find what I was looking for.

I've come to realize that my auto insurance is total crap. We were driving around uninsured for months (don't flame, I know it's horrific), and in Februrary, we got the cheapest insurance we could find to prevent us from getting a ticket when pulled over. At the time, it was NOT about quality insurance. Well, in August, we will have been insured without a lapse in coverage for 6 months, so we're going to be shopping around.

I'm just curious what auto insurance companies ya'll deal with. Who do you love and who do you hate? We don't plan to buy the most expensive fancy policy complete with free airplane miles or anything, but we want a policy with substance that is also affordable. So, who do you have good experience with (including if you were hit by someone with great insurance who took good care of you!)?

I use Progressive Auto Insurance. I like them a lot, they lower my rates every 6 months for being a repeat customer.

I got hit by a drunk guy who had no insurance info on him, but claimed he was insured. My company paid everything upfront and when we got his insurance info, they handled getting the money from him and getting my deductible back. That way, I was able to get my car repaired quickly and not worry about any of it. My accident happened on a Saturday night and the insurance adjustor called me the very next morning. yes, on a Sunday. Not that anything was really happening that day, but it gave me peace of mind, instead of having to wait until Monday. I had a choice...either I could go with their certified body / mechanic shop and have the work guaranteed for as long as I own my car, or I could go to someone I choose, in which case, the adjustor would give me whatever the estimated repairs would cost, (additional charges would be reviewed and approved if it was determined to be related to the accident only) and the work would be 'final'. I used one of their approved shops, took it back to fix little things a couple times and never paid a dime.

big question ... is your state 'no fault' ? The reason I ask is that in 'no fault' states, some insurance companies will 'go the extra mile' if you're involved in an accident that is not your fault ... while others will cheeze out under the 'no fault' law and raise your premium even if another driver was responsible. If you DO live in a 'no fault' state, it's probably worth it to look into State Farm or another upscale insurer. If you don't live in a 'no-fault' state then you might as well go bargain shopping.

I'm going on over a year with Progressive, and no lowering (no tickets and no accidents either). Did you have to call or what to get your rate lowered?

I have had State Farm for 20 years and I've been very happy with them. I've made a couple claims and everything went great. They did however raise my rates a lot when I got my new car, but I think it's just because it's rated differently.

First of all, go to and get a copy of your C.L.U.E. report. These are all of the claims that all of the insurance companies have reported about you. Verify they are correct.

In order to get an accident free discount, you have to be claim free for 3-5 years. Some companies will report you to this "service" even if you called in for a question and did not file a claim. This prevents any new company from giving you a discount and traps you with the current company. This specifically includes one mentioned in above posts.

Second, you may have insurance, but I bet you are with a high risk company. If ;you are, you must ask any new insurer how long it will take to qualify for their standard company. Check around.

You need to get into a standard company to eventually get the best discounts as you will get milked like a dairy cow if you stay in a high risk or sub-standard company.

First of all insurance in general is a scam everyone knows it.

Pretty much every insurance company will do what ever they can to list you as a "high risk driver" for as long as they can so they can continue to milk you for those high premiums. Any little "moving violation" ticket even if it cost them nothing IE no one filed any claims. I am not talking about something serious like a DUI or a speeding ticket for going 30-40 MPH over the limit I am talking about not stopping "completely" for a stop sign or turning right after stopping at a red light when you were supposed to wait for it to change. Little things that 20 years ago no cared about.

If you have an accident even if it is not your fault be prepared to hear the statement "you were INVOLVED in an accident" especially if as Melonie said you are in a "no fault state"

If you have one of these "incidents" in the last 3 years for most companies that will be enough that it will most likely keep you listed in the high risk category. It used to be standard that it took two of those and way back when it was "normal" for the time period to be a year or two now as other have said some companies are pushing the window to five years.

All that being said I have Progressive, had them for about three years now I had Nationwide for about 6 years before mainly because I have my homeowners insurance with them. I finally left because there rates just kept going up. As far as my rates going down with Progressive, not so far, in the last three years I have had one accident, last November I was rear ended at a red light (not my fault) had a 15 over the limit speeding ticket and one using a turning lane to pass a car stopped in front of me, a police car ironically, I really felt it was almost a case of "entrapment"

I guess I am just lucky they did not go up.

You probably won't qualify for state farm, maybe not allstate either. They are very picky. Those companies work with other companies for higher risk people.
