Default $300 stolen by club(or another dancer)

I recently worked over in Melbourne for 6 weeks.

The place I was working pays dancers either $15 or $17 to do our stage shows BUT you cant collect until Friday.

    I flew out on Thursday.

I asked to get mine early WEEKS in advance but was told that they couldn't. I didn't want to lose one weeks shifts, so when one of the other dancers (married to an employee, been there 2 years) offered to put it in my bank account, I agreed. (she was also paid $51 for shows I actually did, but I didnt complain, as a 'favour' to her)

The pay was in 3 parts (over 2 venues) there was $187, then $51 and $255. She was 'unable' to collect it all at once, so $187 went in to my bank on Friday last week.

She then texted saying "where is the $255, its not in the drawer with the other pays?"
I replied that maybe the manager had put it in the safe, since she was collecting it on my behalf, and the other staff cant hand money to anyone other than the girl who earned it.

She said "ill call John and see"

Now shes not answering her phone (nor is her husband). Its been a week.

    There are 3 possibilities
    1. She has stolen the cash
    2. The manager has stolen the cash
    3. One of the staff has stolen the cash (or given it to another girl)

The manager only works certain days, but I know he'll be in tomorrow (doing rosters) I have to check with him, and see if he knows anything.

My next step is to decide whether to get the police involved over $300, or if its a workplace relations thing (since its wages).

Ive been asked to work back there at the end of the year, and kinda wanted to, since Perth sucks for stripping.

    What would you do?

I've had much more than $300 owed to me by the management of a certain adelaide strip club *cough*105*cough* ... more in the $1K mark since it was Clipsal that year I worked that time.. and I quit (walked out)... before the Clipsal weekend was over... and they were holding all money that all dancers had earnt until the weekend was over.

In the end, I have never seen a cent because it was pretty much my word against their word that I had not been paid and even had earnt the amount of money I had earnt. Yes, dodgy club! So .. I put it down to a bad trust decision.

Ever since, I refuse to work for clubs that "hold" any of my money. If I can't get paid by the end of my shift, forget that.. I'm not working there. I've been burnt by that adelaide club and nearly got burnt (yet I was smart so got my money) by a local (gold coast) club ... so yes.. I now refuse to have any club hold ANY money of mine or not pay me the at the end of the shift.

I would only take it to the police or workplace relations or small claims tribunal/court if you have paperwork that can back you up on the fact that you earnt the money and that it has not been paid to you.

Okay personally, I put write it down as bad trust decesion, but I think you should first call the club and find out what's going on with it....They can tell you if she picked it up or whatever....

It sort of sounds sketchy that she isn't answering the phone tho...hmmm.....I donno.

Really, what are the cops going to do? She can just say that you owed her the money or said she could take it....blah...it might not be worth the hassle, unless you have proof she stole it...

When I quit at the very first club I ever worked at, the manager had some of my money, but I just walked out. I called him for weeks afterwards trying to get it back, but he was always conveniently out of the office, even when I showed up to the club. I will never trust anyone (even 'friends' I work with) with my money again. There is a select few, like maybe 2 girls I will hand money to, and know it will come back to me. I don't have advice, other than to make sure your money stays in your care/custody/control and that's it.

i've seen it happen, too. A good friend of mine was never sent her back-pay (over $1K) after she left only a week before her contract expired while dancing in Guam. They said she would receive it by mail. The club she worked at has since shut down. They'd been having financial troubles for a long time (owner's debt from gambling, management skimming off the top). It was a decent club (location was good) but because of these things, I'm glad its finally gone.

Its not too common but I think any club that entices girls with stipends runs the risk of this happening. As much as I love getting paid a weekly fee for dancing, I am very cautious to do my accounting and keep receipts. I won't work for place that won't copy or print out a pay statement to prove the days and hours I worked and the cash I received. Normally, these are also dated, signed by me and initialed by the manager. If they give me any guff about it, I say its for my tax purposes. I don't let up until they follow through.

I hope you're able to avoid this in the future. Its a huge let-down, I'm sure.

I would definitely call and speak to the club manager, or whoever is in charge of handing it out. It was pre-arranged for her to collect your $$ right? If so, and the club says she has it I'd then call the police.

Did u have an employment contract with that club? I know u might have coz it works differently than strip clubs. I think firstly contact the club manager and ask for this to be resolved. If that doesn't work then depending on whether your status was employee or independent contractor will determine where u will go from from there. Feel free to PM me.

Just spoke to the dance manager. He said that the money isnt there BUT noone has contacted him to authorise it being handed out (since Im not collecting it in person, they have to call him before it can be collected)

Hes going to 'look into it' so Im waiting a few hours till I call him back.

    this is so frustrating.

At least I know for in the future (and made decent money while I was there, not counting the stages wages)

Turns out the money has been stolen. The company will reimburse me, and they are viewing all the surveillance tapes to see who removed it from the drawer. And Im pretty sure that it will be the girl who was supposed to deposit it for me, or her husband.
(I mean if a fence comes in bringing you stolen goods at work, youre likely to steal yourself)

So I should get my money, but it will be a week wait (on top of the 2 weeks already, but hey)

Its been over a month and they havent contacted me. The last time I caught the boss he was "still looking into it"
Im due to go back to Melbourne Sept/Oct to look at apartments, so the money is theoretically in the safe at the club for me.

stay on his back about it. just keep ringing him and tell him to send it to you or put it in your bank account. the longer u leave it the less likely u are to ever get it.

Im going to keep calling on Thursdays (hes always there on a thursday night) and try to catch him. Im supposed to be working there when I come back to Melbs, so I was hoping that it would be sorted, since I will be back there.

Im pretty sure that legally, since this is WAGES and stolen from them, they have to pay me back, even if they cant catch the thief. Not MY fault it was stolen from thier premises.

I had a feeling when I read the OP, you wouldn't see that money.

I hope you do - but I honestly don't think you ever will.
