Default Where should I move to out west?

    Inspired by the Boulder thread.

I like outdoorsy stuff and progressive politics, gay men, weed, being green -- and also CRAVE a good music and art scene, with a good newspaper or two. Especially punk music and indie rock. And I HATE cold weather. No cold weather!!!! Cities are cool, as long as they aren't too overwhelming or full of unfriendly people overly concerned with image (in other words, not Manhattan). Landscape-wise, I love forests and mountains more than anything else, but it's alllll good.

OK, so where should I live?

When I visited, I thought Austin was really cool except it was way too white for me. Yeah I am white, but I llike diversity.

Portland would be perfect...... May through October. after that... it's rain rain rain cold cold cold gloom gloom gloom. seriously. if you can't handle cold weather and lack of sunshine, find somewhere else to live november through april.

Humboldt county (arcata, eureka) was beautiful, lots of green forests and mountains and a beautiful coastline, but the weather is just like portland in the cold months. If I was going to move out west... i'd go just north of san francisco or just south of it, but not in it. San fran is really expensive to live in... a 1 br apartment is like 1K/month! If I had a lot of money, i would live in san fran... well berkeley actually.

There's a website where you can take a quiz based on things you want in the place you're going to live and it will give you a list of cities and tell you about them:

A hippie friend recommended Arcata, but he gave me the impression that it didn't have a scene...like it sounded like a boring but pretty place to be. He just visited tho.

Thanks for the link! The No. 1 city on the list was Portland. It also included Las Cruces, NM and Honolulu! Kinda random!

I also suggest san fransisco. Maybe you can get a medical marijuana card.

If you're interested in researching different areas and asking the locals questions, this is a good site to peruse (and it also has a forum):

Portland is wonderful (I moved here from Los Angeles) I have lived here for six years and love it. I also work for a local newspaper! There are many threads on it... it does get cold, though, but not super duper cold... like it hits the teens as a low a couple times a year and is in the high 30s-mid 40s in the winter. We're getting a huge boost in the tourism industry from our music & culinary scenes... and also, jobs are not super hard to find if you are able to look adeptly... yeah...

Not very good for stripping though, $$ wise (read like, any thread in Club Chat or SG about PDX), especially lately!

Or else maybe SF. The cost of living is a lot higher there though.

I went to arcata for a bit. just camped there, went through the town. It's a REALLY cute little town. there's a grassy place in the center where people hula hoop and juggle and hang out. It's where humboldt state university is, they have a cool circus a friend of mine is in. the main part of town pretty much has a couple restaurants, some coffeehouses, a health food store, art galleries and hydroponic stores. most of the surrounding towns are nothing but miles and miles of forest with grow-ops hidden in them, with gas stations and hydroponic stores. The major source of income for most people who live in humboldt county is selling weed, so if you're looking for a job there, it might be a little hard unless you want to trim plants. You're allowed to grow up to 25 plants legally if you get your medical caregiver card. weed is pretty much legal there... if you care about that. It's really cool to visit though. You should definitely visit if you're planning on going to the west coast.

that website always puts portland, or as my number one on the list... but having lived there for a year.. it's definitely not. I even answered on the quiz that I do not want rain with a "strongly disagree" and it STILL put portland. I wouldn't live there, but I definitely would visit again- visit there too... while it's still warm. It will start to get cold and rainy about sept-oct.

edit- oh yeah... there is a strip club.. the fabulous tip top or something like that?? near arcata, dont know how close though.

Sounds just like Portland, but it does get chilly and rainy here. Even in May I was outside in a hoodie and jeans. It finally got hot though, it's up in the 80's now.

^portland IS great. If you get depressed from lack of sunshine though, you may want to go to a tanning bed once a week or get one of those uv lights in your house. that's what i had to do to keep from being super depressed all the time.

Where are you coming from, by the way?

I'm living in a cool hippie town in upstate NY called Ithaca, where the winter lasts from Oct. through May. The winter is bitter cold (in the 20s during the day, at night), gray skies, and the sun never shines during the period, either. Talk about depressing. But the summer is AMAZING though. There's tons of beautiful forest all around, and it's paradise. But there's nothing to do here as far as a scene. bars close at 1, people dont party that hard, and the music scene is non-existent. But for some people, this could be the greatest place ever. Like if you're into composting/homesteading etc.

I cant stand hippies, but they seem to come along with all the shit I'm into.

You know, this year is unusually cold. This time last year I was dying in cutoff jeans and a lil bitty tank top. The year before that I was having dreams about frolicking in snow because it was so hot at night. This year is weird. Although I have to agree. Winters here DO suck. So bad. I love the Willamette valley. When its not raining.

I'm going on a roadtrip at the end of the summer to scope all these places out! Can't wait! SD is on my list for sure!

hmm, very little in the way of diversity in arcata... though that should have changed in the last couple of years. though, having a KKK house just eight miles north of there....

arcata is really cool if you're REALLY into outdoors stuff and hook up with the right people for mellow laid back house parties.

lots of weed, redwood, and surprisingly some pretty good food.

but-- it does rain a lot. It's not terribly terribly cold-- even when it rains you can get away with one sweatshirt (or two if you're like me-- but then you'd sweat.)

Albuquerque might be up your alley. Really dry weatherwise-- very cold for a short period of time...Nov--Feb. a little bit of a scene. great food. there's some drug culture but I couldn't tell you about the weed scene. however it is a college town-- so it's definitely there.

I was actually really impressed with Little Rock, Memphis and Jackson-- but I can't tell you anything about them except that I got a good feeling from them.

    however, they're not really "west."

Maybe try outer henderson, NV? outdoor desert type stuff to do, always something to do late at night because of vegas, there's work, and you're far enough away that you can keep your sanity-- though it is an expanding 'burb culture.

austin's cool but you either have to live downtown for the cool stuff or consign yourself to spending hours in your day in traffic.

    the southeast portion was cool.

If you want progressive politics and warm weather, you want to stay away from Utah. The summers are quite hot, but the winters can be pretty cold. There is a surprisingly strong gay community in Salt Lake City, including a gay member of the Utah House of Representatives who just announced in a newspaper editorial that he and his partner were headed for California to get married.

But the political climate would drive you nuts, even if you could stand the winter. A moderate is a flaming liberal in Utah.
