NO FLAMING.
I went to hair school before, but after a problematic stretch, I quit. I'm now aching to go back, BUT... the cost of hair schools are freaking me out!! 8k!!!
Are there any apprenticeship programs out there??

What kind of cosmetology schools are you checking out? I'm sure you already know all this junk, but private/corporately owned ones like Artistic are going be pricey... state funded ones will be less and you can also apply for federal & state scolarships.
I know Colorado doesn't allow for apprenticeship programs. I'm sorry I can't be much help...
Curious, why would you be flamed?

i just thought some posters may be snarky.
thanks mia!

I know for a fact that many salons in my area have appernetice programs. Have you called around and asked? That's where I would start if I was you. Eight grand is a lot!

i will try that!!
^^^
One additional thing...in my area, it seems that a lot of TIGI salons have these programs, but the Aveda ones don't because Aveda has a school...so I would suggest contacting salons that feature TIGI or Bumble and Bumble...but yeah that's how two of my friends became cosmetologists.

Wouldn't you be able to get student loans? It is a school after all. Don't know if you had already looked into this, but thought I'd ask/suggest.
I could ask my friend what she did. She just graduated from Cosmotology school and got her license last November.

^ oh yes, please ask!!

Check with the school you want to attend first... you can get better than loans, you can free $$$ for school.
I applied for fafsa and got $2000 for tuition. I went through a state funded technical college so with the kit, books, and remainder of the tuition, I paid $3000 out of my own pocket. I was thrilled, but the financial aid office on campus was actually apologizing for me having to pay so much... there were many others who recieved a lot more.

I applied for FAFSA for my cosmetology and got over $7k in grant money.
I would suggest getting any student loans directly through the department of education... I had Wachovia Educational fold my student loans a week before I was supposed to start school. The same thing happened to everyone else at my school, no matter what bank they chose.

^^^ see! I wasn't kidding when I said a lot more!
I go to an Aveda school. My tuition was 15k, books and supplies were 2k. I got a grant of 5k the rest is a loan through Sallie Mae.
If you are low income, you will qualify for financial aid and also for a Pell grant from the Federal government.
If you are a single mother or recently divorced, you might qualified for displaced homemaker finannial aid.
There should be an office or person at your cosmetology school who could advise you on this, or possibly at the state employment office. Cosmetology is taught at at our state technical colleges and some universities, as well as at private schools. The technical colleges and universities all have fincancial aid offices.

Here's what she said:
"I paid 12,300. But it's already gone up and the other schools are way higher, like 17,000. they do FAFSA loans just like everyone else though. I got a 1,000 dollar scholarship, but you HAVE to ask about them because they aren't able to just offer them up to you."
I just went through the whole song and dance with Artistic a few months ago. The total cost of tuition was close to 25k. I qualified for some partial financial help but in the end just couldn't afford it. They won't stop calling and emailing me, too! It's been almost 3 months since I told them no.
I also am interested in alternatives for school. Good luck to us both!

$8,000 seems pretty cheap for hair. It's about what I'm looking at for aesthetics and that's less than half the hours!
Fill out the FAFSA - it can't hurt. You can even have the results sent to many different schools and decide which you want to attend later.
Because there ain't no tits on the radio
