How much advance notice would a Marine sergeant get before being shipped off to Iraq?
Depends on what type of unit he is in. Some commands can give 30-60 days notice, or you you can 48 hour noticed like I did back in '04. It is hard to say. Is this Sergeant in a MEU ( Marine Expeditionary Unit)?
Dunno. I guess he could be. He's stationed at Camp Pendleton and he's already been to Afghanistan. This is for the novel, I have him leaving with a week's advance notice and I was just wondering if that was plausible.
First, I love my military phone sex man. I've never even actually had phone sex with. He gives me a hundred bucks a nite to chat with him on IM...about normal stuff...He is in Iraq right now and he said that normally they get six to nine months of notice because they are in units which have to prepare to go.

There is something call the MM manuel. It is like an official rule book. You can purchase a copy . It will help wit a whole lot of you choose to stay with him!
It has everything that is black and white. That really matters! It can get your solider out of trouble.

It is what it is, not what you want it to become, that's important -- at least for now. Today, remember that things worth having are worth waiting for!

My then-bf was supposed to have 2 months notice. Honestly though, we never discussed his rank and all that, he never wanted to talk much about his Marine-past in Iraq and all that. But he got recalled with about 2 months notice.
However, it then got delayed for 5 months, and he had to go to CA to re-train for combat, b/c he was 2 years out of the Marine Corps. Training is about 2 months and then he's off to Iraq.
That probably doesn't help you though, since your person is still currently in the Marines. Sry.

Depends on ones occupational specialty as well.
So is a week realistic? I don't want it to be months and months. Are there situations when they might get such short notice?

Depends a true trigger puller probably won't get shipped in a week. There is weapons qualifications, medical screenings, vaccines, legal prep, and training (spotting IEDs, react to ambush, call a medevac). If he is a low densitiy MOS like intel and the have to have a photo recon intel analyst RIGHT now. Yep, could even be 72 hours. Depends upon how mission critical his job is. If he is Force Recon (Like special forces for the marines) he can be on stand by. When I was 101st you go into rotation, all you bags are packed and loaded in connexs, vehicles are staged in a holding area beside the runway, and you are on standby to deploy anywhere world and be on the ground there in under 18 hours from the Presidents order. That is a Brigade or about 5000 troops, with trucks, humvees, artillery pieces, and enough food and ammo for two weeks.
What does our tragic hero do?
He's a sergeant. He's kind of a peripheral character; the main character doesn't know him very well when she marries him, and then a few weeks after they impulsively get married, he gets shipped off to Iraq and she never sees him again. She doesn't really concern herself with what he does at work all day, but they live on the base and he does come home at night. So he could be any kind of sergeant. I just need to get rid of him in a week or two.

Battle Staff NCO - They work in the Tactical Operations Center (HQs) and work in three shifts, tracking everything that happens in their Area of Operations and during a battle. They are the Commanders Staff and keep him informed and execute his Orders. Each station is broken into sub tasks. He has just been called away as an individual augmentee to replace another Marine lost do to injury.
I have no idea what that even means, LOL! My main character doesn't really need the details either... shall I take this to mean that yes, it's possible he could go in a week if he's replacing someone else who got injured? How bad of an injury would it need to be?

Thanks!

Thats me your random military dude......... your welcome.
Get yee to Ashland for the Fourth.
I wish I could, but K's parents are coming to see us in Portland so we have to be here.
Yeah, but even specops do get a few days warning when being sent from their home base to a mission staging area. They do need the time to get legal papers in order (life insur, etc) and make any arrangements to handle their affairs while gone.
IA (at least the ones from the Navy going over to cover for Army and Marines) get a few months before actually putting boots on the ground.
