Default NY, what is it like...

living there. i want to live in NY some day. I have visited New York before and I love it! But where are the best affordable places to live? (I want to do entertainment there).

is it possible to afford living alone?

please share any and all details possible.

There are no affordable places to live in New York City unless you're ungodly rich.

It's a great town to visit, but I think I'd go nuts living there. It's very noisy and everything's VERY expensive. Great restaurants and tons of stuff to do though! I love New York, just to visit only.

You don't have to be "ungodly rich"..... New Yorkers spend a lot on rent, yes, but when you live in the center of the universe you expect to pay a premium.

Roommates are one option, living in one of the outer Boros (boroughs? sp?) is another option, and there are plenty more ideas to keep costs down beyond that. If you have your heart set on living alone, be prepared to eat-sleep-breathe craigslist and then snag a deal.

I didn't say you had to be a billionaire to live there, but most people who aren't rich and who live in New York either have roommates or live in tiny little filing cabinets. I'm sure it's worth the money if you have it. What's your deal lately, anyway? So much pissiness on here.

I guess I'm ungodly rich then.

Visiting NY is totally different from living here. I can't imagine living anywhere else right now. We are SPOILED. We have access to anything and everything.

It depends on what you mean by affordable. It's the toughest real estate market in the country.

I'm from Laguna Beach, CA and people ask me why I would move here from there.

I lived in the Bronx and commuted for 5 years before I knew the right people and found a large one-in-a-million apartment that is rent stabalized in a nice neighborhood in the city.

It has changed me. I made a lot of sacrifices to be here.

Fashion is huge here. Just like a car is important elsewhere, clothes are important here in place of that.

The nightlife is great. You will never get popped for drunk driving. I've had a few drinks and will meet up with some friends in a bit.

uh.. so that makes it ok, just bc you wont get arrested for it?

and i certainly hope that wouldnt be a factor in someone's choice to move somewhere.

My friend who has an MFA in theatre tech and was on the technical staff at the Yale school of drama was offered a job as a stage manager/designer on Broadway, but he couldn't afford to live there with his family and decided to turn it down.

Why do you want to live in NY? I'm asking you this as someone who actually lives there.

My apartment is small, but is rent-stabilized and in a kick-ass downtown neighborhood in Manhattan. No, my tub is not in the kitchen.

And Yek is flat-out wrong. NYC can be ungodly expensive, but there's also tons of cheap stuff to be found all over too in terms of food, culture...and Central Park is free!

Most areas of the Bronx are shitty and a long train ride from anything worth seeing in Manhattan. But all the best parts to live in are, of course, the most expensive.

Also, the real estate market really is tough. Rent will almost certainly be your biggest expense, especially if you're intent on living alone. You'll have to pay a broker's fee in addition to your deposit, which equals about another month's rent. You typically need to shell out a lot up front to get a place, and be ready to write a check for a place you like NOW.

If you decide to move there, I have a friend who is a broker and has hooked up friends of mine in the past.

But it's tough. If you want to move there because you like watching "Friends" or "Sex and the City", DO NOT MOVE THERE. Your dreams will be shattered within a month.

But I love living there though.

You should try the borough of Queens to live, it's not that expensive many great neiborhoods and a hop and skip from New York City. I was born I raised In Queens NY it's one of the coolest boroughs, trust me oh and one of the safest from the rest
